Nissan Terrano Gearbox Teardown

my terrano transmission failed in Canada, Thank you for this video as it has helped me understand the transmission. We didn't get the terrano in North America just the Petrol pathfinder. I have many questions about assembly, i purchased a brand new crate fs5w71c trans from a 88 D21 4x4 with a z24 4Cyl motor. I understand i can swap the case from the sandwich plate to match bellhousings for the TD27, The trans i bought was equipped with speed sensors, would i have to make any modifications for the diesel

Blimey! she was in a bad state. I'm not sure if this would apply to your 4x4 but I've read online that towing heavy loads in top gear can put massive strain on that gear and they can go bang. I don't know how true this is but it kinda makes sense to me. Anyway, great to hear you treated her to a new box and tyres etc. Fair play.

+Mr.Mister that was the theory from the gearbox place, towing too much firewood in 5th. Combine that with an owner without much mechanical sympathy and you end up with this. I'm amazed the failure didn't take out too many other parts. Cheers!

Hi…i just want to ask some question…i bought this kind of gear box to replace my nissan e24…but it has 1 tooth difference on each gears…du you acctually know what would be the difference on its performance…for example my old gearbox has 34/12 on 1st gear while the new one i bought has 32/12 teeth how will it affect

My terrano II gear box is hybrid with nissan pathfinder gear box .. I installed vg33 on my vehicle (terrano II) it is better now and more power

Is it possible to remove input shaft bearing from bell housing without dropping the box, when changing the clutch? Thanks

These 5-speeds share parts with the Skyline and have a reputation for premature wear around 150,000 Kms. V6 versions were stronger as they used GTR heavy duty members.

haha too much for me! Although I'm sure if you swapped those wonky cogs it would run just fine. I was surprised how easy it came apart, a circlip and a few bolts

Losing 5th is common with this box. It starts with popping out through dog gear wear and only gets worse as teeth break. All it needs is a fragment jam to do that damage.

Thankfully this problem is external to the gearbox. I had heard that they can be fragile

Towing heavy trailers will very quickly destroy 5th gear in these box's. Use 4th only.

My transmission is making that sound. I have one of the very few diesels like this in the US so no luck finding a direct replacement in a junkyard. Will a gearbox from a gasser bolt up? I believe my drivetrain is out of a 1991 terrano 1 4x4

Please help. I have one of the very few terrano one Diesel drive train Nissan's here in the states and my transmission is making this noise. Could anybody here tell me if there is a petrol transmission that would bolt up I could Source here?

I believe the petrol version has a different number of splines on the input shaft. Do you need a new box or just new bearings?

Badgertronix thank you so much for your reply. It makes a pretty good clunk at a regular interval like in your video. It does it in every gear except 4th. I'm afraid it's the same problem because it sounds the same. Before it failed I was trying to pull a tree reversing in 4 wheel drive which I'm sure stressed it pretty bad

My. What a big bar you have Badger... #NoHomo. 😂 Yeah. That is pretty bad. Never quite seen one that bad. Saw a TD5 gearbox with some chewed up teeth that was making noise. It wasn't that bad though. It was fine before he let his Mrs drive it apparently. I also saw a Subaru Impreza with a stripped clean 4th gear about 3 years ago. A guy at work who is a boy racer converted it to Turbo and had a serious tune thrown on it. Then destroyed his gearbox racing to the the chippy one night during breaktime. I can't remember the last time i saw a Terrano. Used to see them all the time when i was a lad.

+zoidberg444 the bigger the bar the tighter the sump plug 😂 Many years ago when my folks had Janspeed's development Sierra XR4x4 it used to chew through gearboxes like I chew through donuts. Best car ever but it made way too much power . Still quite common here the Terrano but parts (especially gearboxes) are getting tricky to find.
