I own 3 Nissan Maxima's. At 178k,251k and 194k, Maintenance is key.I bought the one with 251k, replaced the Chain,gears etc., due to LACK OF OWNER MAINTENANCE. This is the ONLY thing you must do. My timing chain on my '02 Maxima made a louder than usual rattling noise on startup this morning. It's always made a racket when it's first started in the morning, but today was louder. I hope this "fun" job is not in my future!
@maximaniac72317 жыл бұрын
Well, 2 years later and the engine and chain are still doing just fine. I did recently replace the valve cover gaskets myself and the area under the valve covers look like a new car at 165k miles. I really do think the only VQ's that have timing chain issues are because of people stretching out the oil changes too far. I've always changed mine at 5k miles, but my car burns a quart every 1000 miles so even after 5k the oil has been refreshed pretty well. If it didn't burn oil I'd go with 3,500 mile OCI's on this car on dino oil or 5k OCI's on synthetic.

Yeah they changed the oil every 4000 miles, they probably didn't mention that they idled the engine for hours a day. I change the oil in my car every 10-12k miles and there is zero sludge. The difference is my commute is 40 miles one way and i dont sit and idle. I dont use drive throughs.
@wwccauto10 жыл бұрын
This vehicle is not mine, the owner swears they change the oil every 4 or 5 k miles which should be fine but who knows what kind of oil they are using. The sludge buildup in this motor is extreme. Joseph Moran: if it is just making noise at start up it could just be the tensioner, but this engine only made the noise at start up for the first little bit before it got much worse. Here is the video showing some of the sludge buildup found in this motor. Engine Sludge
@brianphillips59299 жыл бұрын
so, you say it's a time consuming job. How long did it take you to complete?
@chefboiii9 жыл бұрын
wwccauto Mine did not have that much sludge. Its likely they used the wrong oil because a nissan is very specific on what kind of oil to use. On top of that makes me wonder if they had any cooling system issues because poor performing cooling systems cause more sludge to form.

yes, people say a lot of things when it comes to oil changes.. they always say " i had it done recently"... when you ask 5x then they admit that the last recently was 2 or 3 years ago... bad/wrong oil and too little oil changes play a big role when it comes to chain or tensioner issues...chains need clean and good oil and they`re also quite hard on the oil, too (shearing)
@MikeMiller-kg8vh9 жыл бұрын
In your opinion, is it absolutely necessary to remove the upper oil pan. I've seen other videos on this job, and there is no mention of removing it. I know the Nissan shop manual states to remove it, but I'm hoping to bypass that step. My concern is the seal at the bottom of the timing chain cover since the upper oil pan would be already in place. I plan to do a dry fit to see how it will go.
@wwccauto9 жыл бұрын
I removed the upper oil pan because it was leaking from the gasket on the transmission side. With the upper pan out it is easier to assure that the lower part of the timing chain cover will seal when you put it back. However, you don't need to remove it if you don't want too, and you can put the cover back on and have things seal up nicely.

If you are digging that deep into the engine everything ought to be replaced. Wear and tear on the sprockets and chain guides is easy to see, the chain itself can be a bit more difficult to assess. Best to just do it all, especially on a Sentra where all of these parts are fairly cheap. Replace the hydraulic tensioner as well.

fireblade639 My 2002 Nissan Maxima was making this noise. I replaced the front left catalytic converter in which the clicking noise on the left side stopped. There's still a clicking on the right side of the car so I plan on replacing the timing chain to see if that addresses the noise. The Nissan service department alleges that both of my cats were performing at an inefficient level. When I got the repairs done for the cat, my mechanic (including a second opinion) confirmed that only one cat came up on the diagnostic code. I'm hoping that reolacimg the timing chain will resolve the clicking noise however; I may not be totally convinced that the radiator side doesn't need to be replaced as well. Just providing you with something to consider.

to those who complain about their vehicles:- people are too stupid today than they where 30 years ago , I am not a Mechanic but I sure know as you do too; you need air , food and water in order to stay alive ! so does your vehicle you rely on . it needs its oil change every 3000 miles or every 3 months , water ( antifreeze ) checked weekly with other fluids , and its tune up every year give or take . and other necessary parts such as brakes , tires , fuses , relays e.t.c . a big example is my girlfriend's niece drove her brand new Nissan Altima for 2 years and never changed its oil , and she wondered what the fuck went wrong with it ! as I showed her stupid ass the blown up head gasket . and a factory printed date on the oil filter 2 years prior that was never changed and the oil was so fucked ? it actually crystallized from burning dead. and she replied : oh , I didn't know that I had to change the oil . all the blessings you have and you complain about your vehicles been crappy ? My engine is taken apart now and my mechanic is just gonna charge me the parts for the timing chain (200) to install. When your rebuild the engine you have the option of REbuilding it with new parts. so if your mechanic is charging you over 2000, with the excuse of adding a timing chain.. you're getting ripped off. Had the same problem. Husband fixed it replacing all 3 chains and all the internal parts with his dad and took them well over 4 days total cost around $600. You have to be real careful to make sure the seal around the timing chain case and oil pan is perfect or it will leak oil because its a liquid seal and you have to make sure the bead is perfect and you dont rub off the bead trying to get the timing chain cover back into a tight spot. The biggest part of this job is removing everything thats in the way around and under the timing chain case including the entire top of the engine

Great video. Have a question. We have a 2005 Altima v6 with 73k miles that also has noise coming from the timing chain. I used a screwdriver with my ear to the handle and it sounds like the noise may be coming from the upper guide instead of the tensioner guide although I have not taken the cover off to verify it's the exact same issue as this one. It sounds similar. Since the chain is supposed to last over 100k miles, can I change just the tensioner and the 3 guides without removing the chain? Or does the chain have to come off in order to change the guides and tensioner?
@wwccauto9 жыл бұрын
You could replace just the guides and tensioner if you want. The chain on this engine seemed perfectly fine but it was replaced because by the time you get in there you might as well do it all. Usually all the parts come in the kit anyway. Having said that, the secondary chains that go between the cams and their associated tensioners require more time and effort to get to, but some may choose to leave them alone. Ideally you should do everything behind the cover, but ultimately it's up to you, and I think you could probably get away with just doing the guides and tensioner if you really wanted too.

Mine is doing it now where can I get my parts from so I can have the work done to my Nissan
@Nosferatu109 жыл бұрын
To me that sounded like your needing a valve adjustment, I had the same problem same ticking noise. And after the repair everything was gravy
@sblagg5272 жыл бұрын
Why would the valves need adjusting on an engine with hydraulic (self-adjusting) lifters?
@Nosferatu102 жыл бұрын
@@sblagg527 not sure if they do have self adjusting lifters. I took it to the infiniti dealership that's what they told me. It's a common problem with the G35.

I live in San Antonio Texas aint know way Im paying 600 to 1200$ to replace the timing chain and I have a 2007 3.5 Nissan Altima its a bitch to get to the chain. You cant take it to pep boys or the dealer unless you want to pay an Arm, Leg and a Foot you have to shop around there has been too many times Nissan has quoted me outrageous prices. So if Nissan or pep boys or the big name Auto repair shops says dumb shit like oh its going to be 900$ to fix this somewhere its all just a matter of shopping around will fix it for alot less. Me myself purchase the parts myself than take it to a mom and pop mechanic that you can trust they wont charge you dealership prices. My 2007 Altima runs like a champ with 130,000 on her thats with full synthetic mobil 1 extended life and mobil 1 air filter, CVT transmission fluid change every 30,000 miles is a must for these Nissan CVT transmissions and the fluid is expensive I may add if you take proper care of your vehicle then it should last a long time and I drive the shit out of the V6 engine you can hear me coming from a block with my straight pipes on it you would think its a 350z or g35 the way it sounds

Ahhh... The old myth that "synthetic" oil will dissolve sludge... Lol synthetic oil is still dino oil in the US... Zero risk of dissolving anything.
@samj10129 жыл бұрын
You agree that Nissan engines are unecessarily complicated and time consuming to repair. When something goes wrong, mechanic needs to remove so many parts to fix the problem ?
@stumpmtsr6 жыл бұрын
Took the timing cover off and fixed the tensioner. When I put it all back together it apparently jumped timing. Now it's out time. Both cams are sitting at 2 o'clock. Ugh. With an interference engine how the heck to you fix it without taken the top of the engine apart? Turning the crank doesn't work because the cams don't line up at all.
@jerrellhaynes47035 жыл бұрын
stumpmtsr now it gets complicated,get a manual to find out how many degrees off top dead center to set it,,you have to find out which cylinder is #1,pull the spark plug on #1&put a long screw driver in the hole,with a breaker bar rotate the engine(turning the crank shaft clockwise till the piston pushes the screw driver all the way up)that puts #1 cylinder at top dead center.now rotate further to degree book shows for your engine(both lifters should be level&valves closed when top dead canter)when putting on the chain expect a little kick back,so recheck degree mark after installed,repeat if gear moved off mark when you check till you have degree(4 to 8 degrees off top dead center.you better get a good Manuel,hayes preferred) this happens to be common problem because the kick back off sets the degree mark.live&learn,good luck
