Nissan Titan XD Overloaded

I own a 2017 xd with the diesel. The truck tows great and I agree it’s underrated. As a mechanic I can tell you this truck is more three-quarter ton then half ton. Yes the brakes are upgraded yes the suspension is upgraded yes the frame is upgraded . The biggest difference is you have six lugs versus a traditional three-quarter ton to 1 ton truck that has eight lugs. This usually means you go from a traditional axle to full floating axle. In short the axles on this truck or a beefed up half ton whereas eight lugs typically can support more weight long-term do to the type of full floating axle set up. Yes it can probably tow more than what it’s rated but not for an extended period Of time without potentially damaging your axels. So even though the truck is under rated they probably rated it this way due to the type of axle set up it has. Hopefully this information helps again I love my Titan xd great truck.

I own a 2017 XD , I love it, I constantly read that Nissan has it in the 1/2 ton class, I believe one reason is that it could not Compete in the next class up. I believe it is a 3/4 ton truck. I pull A rv at 6,500 lbs with no problems. For the money you can’t go wrong.

We have a ‘17 XD Cummins and it works perfectly for us. $15K less than a comparable big 3 on the used market and tows our 7600lb TT easily. The low payload is an issues but our tongue weight is only about 900 lbs. plenty of payload for the family and supplies. Eventually we’ll move up to a 1 ton but this thing is serving us well at the moment.

Towing on flat ground is no big deal... it’s towing grades ... large bumps and stoping fast if the breaks fail on the trailer

I am a full time rver. I bought a new 2019 xd and tow about 7500 lbs. I would like a new 5th wheel but nissan underrated this truck. 13,500 or 14,000 would be better. If you tow over rated tow and have an accident you will have problems. I love this truck.

I've towed a 14k lb 5th wheel with zero issues (not normally, but moved it from a friend's house to their new one). It barely felt like anything was attached. I was even able to accel pretty quickly.

@The Streelight Express Don't hate lol --- I knew it was there but it really didn't bog the truck down as much as I expected it to. Driving 50 mph I almost forgot it was attached haha. What I didn't like was stopping. Yeah I had trailer brake controls, but a couple times I didn't give myself enough space and was too hard on the brakes.

I put 3100 pounds of cement bags in the bed while carrying 5000 pounds of fence paneling on a small bumper hitch trailer. It was definitely overloaded. I only had to drive 7miles. I wouldn’t have driven it any further. I will say Idk why everyone talks about the acceleration and braking so much, it accelerated like any other diesel would’ve with that weight, they do have a transmission retardant that works great, and the brakes are great. Honestly better then my 2500 5.9 I had.

You know, I constantly hear about comments on not overloading the titan cummins on towing and payload, but Ford F-250 owners do the same thing with their trucks!! I go to camp grounds and see f-250 that are hooked up to 16,000 to 17,000 lb fifth wheels which is way over loaded for a F-250… I know… When you see the commercials the numbers show above them tow numbers, but…. There is only 1 package that honors them numbers and it would have to be the single cab with no bells and whistles and the high test tow rated model. We all know that most of which we see on the road is not that model. Most F-250 crew cabs pulling fifth wheels on the road are only rated at 2,250 (15% of total max load rating) for payload for a 4x4 with the best gearing at 15,000 lbs for a fifth wheel.

Ive had 3 Duramaxes and they were getting ridiculously powerful and expensive. The Nissan HD would compete nicely with a 2003 2500 if it had 8 bolt rims and a little stiffer springs. Sure it won't compete with todays HD domestic powerhouses but I don't need 450 HP, 800 ft/lbs of torque, a 29000 lb tow rating and a $75K Price tag.

Guys, the engine is capable. The onpy problem here would be stopping the truck, and having rated tires. And the truck does have 2500 rated brakes on it...

I agree it is over weight and shouldn’t be towing this. But the problem is t the brakes or tires either. E rated tires and 14.5 inch brakes all around inline or bigger then the big the big three 3/4 tons.

We pull a 40ft Grand Design 355TH Fifth-wheel Toy hauler that weighs 16k Lbs about every other weekend and no issues with our Titan XD Deisel pulling it down the road. Obviously, we give plenty of room for braking. The only thing we did was add the Timbren NRTTNA Suspension Enhancement System to it and it drives level all the time. The Titan XD is way underrated.

@@chrismidkiff8593 The truck can pull the load as you can see from the video. What it will have trouble with is acceleration and braking. I had similar issues towing a 5000 boat and trailer rig with a Ford Ranger. Also towing up hills is to be avoided as much as possible. The 310/555 Cummins diesel is not nearly powerful enough to tow 17k very much. The 4th gen 325/610will pull 17k quite easily.

@@dieseldog00 You do realize those numbers are not far apart right? The only issue with the titan is where it gets it's torque. I have a deleted and tuned titan and I can easily drag 17k around with NO issues, in the NE with hills everywhere. A stock exhaust brake would be nice, but it pulls and stops without much hiccup. It is unbelievably underrated.... With that said, it fits a crowd like me that pulls 10k max MOST of the time. It will pull 10k like butter. Don't forget, this truck has ratings like a 5.9, 6.0, 6.4, 7.3, idi… It can pull. But it isn't marketed that way.

Dually is much more stable with heavy trailer So if you constantly tow than 6 are better than 4.

crew cab XD gas payload is 2,259LBS/towing is 10,810LBS. Crew cab diesel XD payload is 1,920LBS/towing is 11960LBS-based on SV model. pro 4x XD is less in gas model.

I would go with the Ram in this application, if your budget allows! It will be a more comfortable, safe and convenient ride if you ever need to really load it heavy. The engine brake will also be missed on the titan

definitely got air ride or something to help with the squat my fifth wheel is smaller than this and squats my truck quite a bit with no air in my bags. you should be telling people what you have done to your truck before people pay attention to closely to your video. the payload on a crew xd diesel is only around 1750lbs guaranteed the hitch weight of that trailer is well over 2,000lbs. the truck itself power and trans wise will tow this trailer without any issue but the suspension and other components are just not made to handle that type of weight on a regular basis

I completely agree. The pin weight on an older 40 ft fifth wheel is probably closer to 3k. No way there isn't bags. I'm surprised at how well it did none the less. Also notoce this wasnt om the mountains.

It's built like a 3/4 ton other than the rear suspension, so you need to do some aftermarket upgrades for sure..

The problem is never pulling it, a minivan could pull that trailer. It’s the stopping it where the problems come in. Nissan 100% underrated that truck to appeal to the half ton guys, also to keep DOT off their back. But the truth of the matter is the frame has weak points that need to be addressed. I have towed 17,800 pounds with my XD, But I’ve also had airbags and additional frame work done. 10 miles you’re probably good to go, but I wouldn’t do it regularly without overhauling the frame and suspension components. You could technically do hot shot with this truck if a few minor modifications are done first.

I own a Nissan titan xd diesel as well but would not consider this. It could easily sway away from you and hurt you or others as well. If you look a pay load and tow your fifth wheel is probably close to 2000 pounds and puts you over. If DPS pulls you over you will face some hefty fines. This is coming from a owner of a owner of the truck. So no hate or bull crap. I also have every license possible to drive and load. So just be very careful. That is not only illegal but unsafe and not acceptable.

I agree with the other guys as far as stopping goes. It’s easy pulling on flat highways. When you start pulling up a grade that changes things. If this were filmed in say Knoxville in the mountains on the interstate stretch. This would have been a different video. I think it would pull it up the mountain. It’s just going to do it slow. I could tow that with my Cummins Ram at 60 MPH on that Knoxville stretch. I think the truck is made durable. It’s just under powered for today’s standards. I do like them though and honestly to me there isn’t anything wrong with pulling that fifth wheel at 45-50 mph up tough grades.

This Cummins engine makes 310/555 which is the same as my old 2003 3500 SRW so yes not enough power. I would have gone with the new 400/1000. That.air ride hitch is awesome I don't think I've ever seen one like it.

LEDs run on the cycle it's not continuously on like a normal light bulb or HIDs. The human eye cannot see the cycle because it's so fast. So that's why video is able to pick it up, also different videos will show it cycling in a different pattern as well.

That’s just the frame rate on the camera they’re using. Take a video of LED running lights with your phone and the same thing will happen.

Needs more brakes? It has 14 inch rotors and stops a heavy load better than my f250 did. It has the Aisin transmission that ran puts on their high output Cummins, has a 1 ton axle, has load range E tires, and squat way less than my f250 did with the same load. Your point is invalid.
