One thing many people don't understand about snorkels is they are designed for more than just water crossings. Raising the level of the air intake helps reduce the amount of dust the car sucks in when driving dusty roads and following other vehicles.

Great vid as always!! :-) you’ve got the sound done really well no wind noise at all!. A couple of things to share from when I fitted mine a few years ago. (Oh hell I’ve just see your fried bananas vid on the right, I have GOT to check that out next!!) :O anyway.... they guys might need to know you have to cut out a section of the inner wing on the outside and the inside of the wing. I just caught a glimpse of a hole from the outside, you’ve got to do the inner still for when you install the intake to filter. They need to be confident to cut away two lots of metal. I've got plenty of photos of what I did on my flickr photos if you want me to add some. Can I share a couple of things I’ve learnt in the years I've been using mine? First that metal bracket that you screwed to the A post. Thats going to be a weak point if you drag her though the bush, branches etc will maybe... pull that lose, not to mention speed, thats a far bit of force of air going down that intake tube at highway speeds. The rust issue... I know you;re in Oz you lucky thing! but that is going to rust :( My metal bracket that came with the snorkel, thats starting to rust. I'm going to have to tackle that. So maybe... paint that metal bracket LOTS. I riveted that bracket on, its taken some huge knocks in woods etc and is still tight. Have you fitted the metal bracket directly to the paint work of the A post? I cut a thin piece of rubber the size of the metal bracket to fit between the metal of the bracket and the paint of the car to stop the two rubbing and causing rust. I mounted my snorkel higher up the wing, that way where you showed that gap, it isn;t there on mine, it wraps over the top of the wing perfectly like its made for the T30. I found that the forward facing safari intake is no good when it rains hard. For some reason..... when it really monsoons... I found my petrol engine didn't like it... it started to struggle for power under load. Not sure why, but I changed the safari intake head for the round mushroom type fitted to Land Rovers as standard, its been PERFECT since. The side benefit for you Australian owners, is that the mushroom intake has curled Vanes underneath where it sucks in air, they wil throw heavier items, sand dust etc out and away from the intake so you don't get much, if any sand drawn into the filter. Thats GOT to be good for the outback and beaches! I kept my resonator chambers (2) / water trap, the big box inside the wheel well as it acts as a perfect water trap for any moisture that gets sucked in, rain etc... you're going to get some moisture sucked into the intake. The way I routed my intake from the snorkel means water drawn in will drop down into the water trap in the wheel well. I kept the stock airbox and fitted the round intake hose from the snorkel to the triangle intake pipe of the X-trail airbox. It can be done and it seals extremely well. I fitted my snorkel as where I drive a lot on the military Salisbury Plain, the depth of water can catch you out. I;ve had half an inch of water in my box thats why I've fitted a snorkel. Plus... it does draw in cooler air, thats got to be good for Oz, cleaner air, I saw your prefilter good idea! and yes, maybe it looks cool too! but mine is there to save my engine. And look cool :O
@ruggedlife3 жыл бұрын
Awesome advise mate. Good job! Funny you mention the round mushroom type head as I was thinking of swapping it to that at some point. Funny you also mention about keeping the stock airbox and connecting the snorkel hose to the triangle pipe. That is exactly what I wanted to do as I wanted to keep the airbox to catch water and also retain the drop in type filter. However, I cannot do that as there is no room between the battery and that pipe because I now have a larger size battery. The rust and bracket issue you pointed is good advise. I will keep a close eye on mine. Cheers mate 👍

@@ruggedlife Totally recommend the mushroom, more so for where you live, it'll serve triple benefits in Oz! Over here you can buy generic mushrooms, I bet its exactly the same for you there, all from China no doubt. But.. it works much better on our N/A engines. I run an 096 battery and got it all connected, tight yes! but got it done using elbows and flexi intake pipe with silicon over hoses to cover every joint and BIG s/s clamps three times the size of jubilee screw types. Happy 2021!

A snorkel on a low light 4x4 is a dangerous thing because it will encourage some people to go into deeper and faster moving waters than the vehicle can handle . However I think you are sensible enough to avoid that temptation . I don't want a big bulky high snorkel on my x-trail I just want an air grate high up on the side of the mud guard but I cant find anyone to do it .

Ok, so have had a good look at this and did some research... After much thought, I have decided not to fit the snorkel, the main concern for me is that the T 30 has plastic front guards. Even though the body of the snorkel is bolted to it the ONLY real solid mount will be the pillar. There just seems to much movement and flex on the guard and in time I'm sure this mount will loosen up. The pros and cons are there, I'm not saying it's a bad Idea, yes it looks good, yes it will help put cleaner air in, yes it will help with water crossings. I'm ok with cutting into body/frame etc, if it was a solid metal fender I would not hesitate, but on a plastic fender that flexes etc, just not convinced. But as I said by all means go for it if you need to, Like Marvin said, be practical, do you really need one. My xtrail see beach, bush etc and like Marvin I'm careful how I drive it and am amazed where this vehicle can go.... Love it !

@@ruggedlife Once the next step from this video is complete, the inner guard steel will secure the pipe leading to the snorkel. Even if it is not a positive fastening, it will more effectively secure the snorkel assembly- which in addition to the 4 fasteners going through the outer guard, will be more than enough. You can also use urethane (or as it is a plastic guard) silicone to make it even stronger than the average connection to a steel guard.

I'm just a little worried about cutting the inner guard, but will get over my anxiety, lol🤪. Am currently getting a new rear exhaust section done on my T30. Great news regarding the stickers and merchandise... Well done. Will be looking to get some... Great news about doing trips , I'm on the Gold Coast so yea, will be in on that for sure once you organise one... good way to meet like minded offroaders. Anyway keep up the great work... I Enjoy your vids and look forward to the next one's... Happy New Year, cheers Steve.
