Thanks Brian for a very helpful video to know if the timing belt snaps, this is the first time I watched this video discussing about the non-interference engine, very nice and Thank you Brian.

Nice vid Brian, I put a timing belt on one of these a couple years ago that the belt stripped some teeth off of. New timing belt - no problems or valve/head damage.

I've had quite a few vehicles come in with tbelts that have let go on interference engines and have been fine afterwards. Alot of the time the valvetrain will want to spring into its 'neutral' position when let go. If it gets there before the bottom end comes up then you are home free. Depends on the engine and draw of the card I guess.
@briansmobile113 жыл бұрын
@MeowJW Yep. When your cams stop moving some cylinders will be closed. The springs on the valves make the cam stop where the greatest number of valves are closed because that's where the greatest number of springs are at rest.

Thanks! Replaced original (preventive maint) at 105k. 2nd one, dang thing broke at 187k. This video helped me diagnose. 2002 frontier 3.3l v6 but yea, same engine, etc.

That makes a lot of sense .. My truck as the same issue . I got it from a friend said he replaced everything . I bet they didn't do this

Use a stethascope or a screw driver to your ear to isolate where the noise is coming from. HANDLE side to your ear!

I have a 2005 Xterra SE w/ 56,000 + miles. It starts up just fine usually, but then maybe as soon as pulling out of the driveway or idling at a stop light or just cruising, it shuts down. Sometimes I can shift to neutral and get it started in a try or two. When it starts, it runs perfectly. Other times I have to pull over and try to start it. Most recently I had to have it towed. They think it is the Crank Sensor or IPDM...Fuel Pump Relay. Diagnostics not definitive. Ideas?

this is basically the same engine as the older pathfinders judging by what I am looking at, if I am correct?

IF YOU GET A P0340 CODE: DONT DRIVE IT ANOTHER MILE, REPLACE DISTRIBUTOR WITH NISSAN ONLY DISTRIBUTOR, OR YOUR TIMING BELT WILL BREAK AND YOU WILL GET DAMAGED VALVES
@arsalanarif318410 жыл бұрын
During a crank look at the check engine light and see if it's flashing and if it is then your ECM Relay is bad.

I've never understood the logic of these engine designers. Like doesn't anyone think "gee, this interference engine will probably destroy itself if this timing belt breaks, maybe we should use a chain"? I mean if you're gonna use a belt in your engine design, at least use it on a non-interference engine right?!
@pacheco4647 жыл бұрын
You know another interference motor like this one or where to look info about non interference engines car models

As heard in the dealership service drive about 25k miles before the timing belt breaks: "Whadda MEAN I need a timing belt change? $400?! No way!"

If this was an interference motor why would he turn it over? Iv'e heard from so many people that the 00-04 VG33E motors are non-interference motors or interference motor? It seems like the last 2 Mechanics iv'e heard it was non interference which i'm starting to believe cause of this video if you were to crank it over with no timing belt it would be worse than seen here if it was interference motor.
@nickjohnston8811 жыл бұрын
This happened to my 04 xterra 3 days ago, changed belt and it now runs perfect. No valve or piston damage. There is a really good chance that if this happens to you it will survive and just need a new belt.

@smokey756 It's your EVAP Canister Vent Solenoid/Valve or the wiring to it. You can bench test it with a power probe and a vacuum gun like in the Mazda Millenia video on my channel with the P12XX codes.
@briansmobile113 жыл бұрын
@Downeast1100 When you look up the belt many parts websites will indicate if it is or not. Most modern engines by definition are. You get better power and economy from an interference motor.
@briansmobile113 жыл бұрын
@bhstone1 I see them every month. Just depends how fast the motor was reving when it went. MOST of the time a belt will break on acceleration from a stop and the cam will coast to a TDC stop due to valve spring pressure, but if they go on the freeway they are usually hungry for a new head..... zombie like!

@felipevinalay The cams don't turn. Some valves are in the closed position. Those cylinders will have compression. Others won't.

That's why I love my 1971 small block Chevy. NON-INTERFERENCE!!! My cam gear once completely stripped all its teeth (nylon teeth to make it a quieter engine). The only thing that happened was that the compression got way too high in the number one cylinder and it bent the lifter rod and pulled out the press fitted rocker stud a little bit. I replaced the lifters and the lifter rods and I was back in business. The rocker stud is still pulled out a bit but it's OK.

@bhstone1 I have: 2008, european spec 1.8 tdci focus, Autodata classes it as an interference engine, but after an overdue timing belt advisory went un noted by the owner during a service and subseuquent belt fail, during a compression test and examonation by a bore scope, I was surprised to see no valve damage
@Lasselkv2813 жыл бұрын
When worked at a Nissan shop here in Denmark, we also used this method. But almost all of the models we have are with timing chains, and no belts. It usually happens with 300k km on them and the easiest way to check the chain, is by taking of the oil-cap and turn the engine. If the camshafts are not moving, well then you located the problem. Thanks for the upload, Brian.

Hey, I have a '02 Xterra V6 3.3L and I already had my timing belt changed back in '10 @ 101k and I'm now @ 125k but I'm noticing there is a small chirping/squeal under the hood but I don't know what it is. When I'm at a red light or stop sign I can hear it everynow and then. It's squeaky so I figured something wasn't lubed but I don't know. Any advice?

Hey man thanks for the video. Very helpful. I've got an 03 Frontier 3.3L and the distributor rotor isn't turning when I try and fire it up. Do I go right to replacing the timing? Distributor is expensive part and I don't wanna switch it if it's the timing belt. How can I tell if that belt is intact??

I have a 2002 nissan frontier sc would the crankshaft position sensor have anything to do with intermittent spark firings? I put a timing light on every spark plug wire on the distributor because I was having a po300 misfire code. Both my stock and aftermarket distributors do this.

Brian I have a 2000 xterra that has the no start due to the timing belt. I was driving 35-40 mph on the main road an the truck just shut off an wouldn't start. I got all the belts off an crankshaft bolt off now trying to get the pulley off from what I can see the belt didn't break it stripped the teeth off the timing belt. it makes the same noise as your video when you fixed yours was it OK I'm starting to get panicked.
