thats adorable youre an amazing person. I recently had to do the same because my little sister saved a baby sparrow from a cats mouth. I released her a few days ago and tbh I really miss her a lot. Its crazy yall but a baby bird can seriously brighten your day so much

I think it's to help the food travel down to their crop. Looks like they only do it when they're swallowing.

@@bendixbatu isn’t is weird looking!!! I had to look it up. It’s literally so their parents know where their mouth is when feeding them. Like little targets.

@ bendixbatu I also found out that markings on a baby bird’s beak/mouth are an evolutionary process particular to certain birds in order for the Mother Bird to be able to identify any imposters in the nest ie Parasitic Birds that lay eggs in other birds nest, so the raising & feeding of their chicks is left up to its “adopted” parents. It’s amazing how the Parasite Birds can change their egg colour to match the eggs in the nest they plan to hijack - The chicks have also evolved to mimic the cry of the other species chicks, thereby ensuring they are fed. I believe these strange dots/marks evolved so birds could spot their own young to feed. However, the crazy thing is that now the Parasite Bird, to ensure their chick will survive, have evolved as well and their chicks are born with dots/marks on their mouths, almost identical, to the other birds chicks!! Therefore the “foster” Mother cannot identify a baby bird that is not hers & will continue to feed the Parasite chick. It’s really fascinating to learn about these different types of birds evolving identifiers specific on their offspring to outsmart Parasite Bird Species, who in turn, evolve their chicks to replicate the other birds chicks 🐣
