National Institute of Technology or NIT, Surat was earlier known as Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT). NIT Surat was established in 1961 by the Parliament of India. It is a part of the thirty NITs that has been recognised by the Indian Government due to their national importance. The institute houses the 'Center of Excellence' by the World Bank, which studies flood management and water resources. NIT Surat has also been set as the anchor institute to provide a trained workforce for the auto and engineering sector.
Currently, NIT Surat offers 6 undergraduate and 18 graduate programmes and 3 MSc five year integrated degree courses. There are also doctoral programmes. All degree courses are offered under 10 different departments, namely, Applied Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, and Humanities, Applied Mechanics, Applied Physics, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Electronics, and Mechanical. NIRF has been consistently ranking NIT Surat high year after year. In 2017 it was ranked 50, and in 2018 it got ranked in the 61st position. For the year 2020, the institute was ranked in the 54th position.
