Just adding some practical points as discussed by sir 1) Non hot stocks remain for 2/3rd time in consolidation zone. 2) Flag pattern and rectangle pattern if formed, means a consolidation is going on. 3) Use Bollinger band for stocks under consolidation. 4) Before breakout traded value will get increased, but price will be in a range. 5) If traded value is same as 15-20 day average and stock price gives sharp movement then it can be a fake breakout. 6) Consolidation for long time means a larger movement,NR4 & NR7 generally gives breakout soon but some stocks consolidate for long. 7) Probability of stocks giving fake breakout is very high for stocks consolidating for long. 8) Stock comes again to touch boundary of rectangle/fibonacci level in 60-70% of cases.

One of the best patterns in technical analysis is a false breakout. If prices dip below support and then rally back into the support zone, they show that bears have lost their chance.
