US holds around 8K tons of gold reserves. Today's currency is backed by gold. Even if we combine the gold reserves of BRICS nations, it comes around 5K tons. A new currency won't help if it is backed by gold. They need something else to back it. Probably Bitcoin but crypto has its own demerits.

One of the reasons why the US dollar is used internationally is because unlike other currencies such as the Rupee, it is fully convertible in international transactions. What makes a currency like the US dollar fully convertible is that its based on something finite such as petroleum as opposed to fiat (or whatever the government decrees the value.) This method makes it more difficult for a government to control its own currency's value yet it does great wonders for developed nations like the US and is very reliable for international trade.
