some weird takes here imo. 1. No mention of Boseiju but hagra mauling is on the list(Even tho I think it´s a lot worse than bosejiu) 2. Assasins trophy didn´t make it on the list 3. no mention of anguished unmaking I see that some of those are because you somehow decided to include colour/playability but I don´t sthink thats a useful metric for evaluating removal spells. I mean every removal spell is only good if you are in colours that can play it. Otherwise I mainly agree with the list

Soul Shatter is an interesting one. I'd agree it's a spot removal spell, but I tend to think of interaction on three axes: "diversity", "targeted / non-targeted", and "conditional / unconditional". Diversity is just card types it can deal with (e.g. creatures only, or any nonland permanent). Targeted interaction is more accurate and likely to hit what you want, but non-targeted gets around things like shroud. Then conditional is any limitations within its "diversity" category (e.g. "destroy creature" will deal with most creatures but not ones with indestructible, or "exile permanent with mana value 3+" misses those smaller things). I find it useful to map out all my interaction in a deck when brewing because it gives you a good idea of the types of threats your deck is more/less likely to be able to deal with. Can even do it properly fancily using spreadsheet software and mapping it to a 3D graph if you're more of a visual person. Once you've got these parameters down somewhere you can visualise, you can spot any weaker areas, focus particular decks on certain areas of removal to cover their strategies' weaknesses, or tailor them to your meta / the power level you want the deck at. Does anyone else have any other ways they think about interaction? Would love to hear some other views! EDIT: @Nitpicking Nerds maybe a topic for another video? An in-depth look at interaction (including interaction in different zones and the stack) and how to balance it to how your group likes to play :)
@charliemarlow6472 жыл бұрын
@Savannah Lion Nice :) To each their own, definitely! I've found this way of thinking about it helps at both ends of the spectrum - to tune decks for power, or to detune for more rounded fun. Thanks for your comment though, and you have a great week too!
@JessBritvec2 жыл бұрын
I don’t get all fancy with spreadsheets (I actually just use Moxfield 😂), but I probably just do the same thing mentally and make sure I can deal with most threats in every deck. I prioritize synergy first, for instance I have a Mazirek deck where almost everything sacrifices a permanent so I make sure my removal does as well, decks that want death triggers won’t get removal that exiles creatures, if a deck is based on a certain card type I will use that card type even if its less efficient than another, but I keep in mind that I might have to use other card types to make sure the deck doesn’t fall apart when plan A isn’t working. Some decks can function with more synergy than others, but I never find I’m at a disadvantage as long as I’m aware of that. To preface I usually start out with a generic template of 2 general permanent removal, 2 creature removal, 2 artifact and enchantment removal, 2 counterspells (or protection spells) and 2 board wipes (which is a meta call). Even in colors that don’t efficiently deal with a certain type of threat I will find a way, even if it takes two cards. Theres a lot of nuance to that depending on the deck, I will add more of whatever is needed to cover the weak points on top of that “2 of each,” template, but I won’t devote too many card slots before I consider the deck to just not work or be jank. I usually have one in each of those categories that deals with one thing efficiently, then one of them might be less efficient mana wise, but give me card advantage by getting rid of multiple things. I’m not finicky about taking the downside of an efficient card, but I prioritize versatility as long as its not so expensive I can’t leave the mana up based on my curve. I play a lot of black, and I almost always end up putting Soul Shatter in my decks. I think other cards that deal with things by power like Culling Ritual and Despark are great, but I have a hard time finding a spot for them, I might add them in addition to my “2 template,” if I felt they were needed. I think the non-targeting nature of Soul Shatter is what sets it apart, as well as how it scales since it doesn’t specify a mana value. I think your video idea is great, and could be more insightful than a generalized ranking or tier list.
@charliemarlow6472 жыл бұрын

Idk guys. What percentage of the time is Deadly Rollick in your hand while your Commander is on the field? Does the casting cost ultimately average out to more than 1 mana? I also view the life-gain clause of S2P as another 1-2 mana tax, if you're relying on combat damage to win. You might have to spend that much mana, or more, to reduce your opponent's life total back to where it was before Swords, assuming you exile something fairly big. I think I view Deadly Rollick as the #1 (at least right now!)

I will say, holding up 1 mana is not just twice as easy, practically speaking it's like 4-5 times as easy (random guess). There are so many times where you simply have an extra land left over, significantly more likely than having two lands left over. A single dork that is left behind to chump block can be 1 mana. Etc. Of course, if you expect something important to remove is coming, then you can adjust to keep more mana open, but just normally while playing it's not unlikely to have an extra mana somewhere.

Counterspells are a lot different than spot removal. Counterspells can only be used while card are on the stack mean that the less man they are the better. With spot removal you can afford to often wait until your turn to use it.
@ericwong12652 жыл бұрын
I think it's a situation problem. Creature removal is less restrictive than counter spells because they can be used after you untap. Free counter spells are so powerful because you can tap out without fear of something resolving. A mostly free removal spell (like deadly dispute) is worse than swords to plowshares because there is a hoop to jump through and the payoff is 1 mana that can be spent when the creature enters play or on the following turn. A free counter spell is more powerful than a 1 mana counter spell because the counter spell cannot wait. You can't counter a spell on your turn after you untap.

I don't think Soul Shatter should make the list, alot of the times the higher CMC creature isn't the problem u want or need to remove. It's fair to not group Chaos Warp with Beast Within and Generous Gift but I don't think that it's worse than Soul Shatter or Hagra Mauling. About the two color spell like Assassin's Thophy that didn't make the list I can't see why, if a card like Hagra Mauling that is only good in one and two colors made it how being in two colors is a draw back that cuts a card from the list, IMO Assassin''s Thropy could be in the top 5 or even 3
