All that was missing was a sunglasses take and a Roger Daltrey 'YEAAAAAAH!' sting. !D Seriously, though, even I came up with a slightly more dramatic ending for the episode that fits in with its own theme -The Doctor pulls wires and sonics connections and frantically frenagles the second pulse synced with the end of the countdown to normalize the cube victim's heartbeats, the only problem being that he's had to guess which of the pulse emitters three frequency channels the first wave of cubes is locked to., and if he gets it wrong, he may just trigger the second wave. Doctor: So, crunch time. Fire the pulse, I risk killing another third of humanity. Don't fire the pulse, I let the first third die. What do I do? As his hand hovers over the big switch and the countdown ticks away, Rory and Amy place their hands over his in solidarity, a responsibility they will share, i.e, the Power of Three. Simple enough.

@JoeRingo118 Except series 10 had Bill, who was supposedly an "agenda pushing" companion, and it ended up being one of the better new Who series, so really diversity has nothing to do with episode quality. Shit writing is shit writing, and series 11 would have been lacklustre trash if it had been four cishet white dudes in the TARDIS.
@sociallyineptspider-man23665 жыл бұрын
@JoeRingo118 it isn't though, there is nothing wrong with a female doctor, he's female because the doctor regenerated into a woman, now if the show was constantly going on about how great is is because the doctor doesn't have a dick, then you'd be right, but the show doesn't do that. Chibnall just can't write a good story but there's nothing bad about a female doctor
@concon090905 жыл бұрын
@JoeRingo118 Except that's not really the case? Hi, it's me, your local massive SJW, who thought the Ghostbusters 2016 trailers looked naff, and that the "It's About Time" marketing campaign for Series 11 was self congratulatory wank, and that the series itself was overall wank. Just because I'm a hardcore feminist doesn't mean I excuse shitty writing in progressive media, in fact I'm much more likely to be critical of it because, in my opinion, there's a shortage of media that represents women and minorities well. Blatant tokenism and corporations trying to look progressive really pisses me off, because it's taking up space in the cultural zeitgeist that could be used for actually well written stuff like the She-Ra reboot. Basically, people you disagree with aren't predisposed to be mindless drones who like whatever media pays lip service to their values /rant

We can see all the Chibnal traits with this episode. Sonic is a smartphone, have to be inside by night (countdown timer, last episode had the DNA bombs), robots (why???). Plus I felt like the episode just got boring as barely anything happened. On another note: The intro is ok but it is very short. The TARDIS also seems very bland and not that exciting. It feels like a set. It dosen't feel like the Tardis.
@RUClassicallyTrained6 жыл бұрын
@@Jimmy_Jones The saddest part is that the concept for the episode was actually good, the problem was the execution. The plot was all over the place: there was a race but nobody seemed to act like it was, there were too many threats solved in two seconds in a Deus Ex Machina sort of way, the scenes didn't feel like they had continuity at all, the dialogues were SO BAD (exposition after exposition without any subtlety whatsoever), there were too many themes/messages and none of them developed enough to be memorable... Also the ending didn't make any sense: - You can't both win! - What if we give you an empty, impossible-to-follow-through threat? - Sure, you can both win! - There is no hope whatsoever. The TARDIS is lost and we're doomed. - Cheer up, Doc! * TARDIS shows up out of nowhere * I LOVE Jodie and the character of Thirteen, I really like the companions, the music, the cinematography... but all those good elements aren't enough to distract from the bad writing. Good actors can only do so much with terrible lines. I hope next week is better since there's a different writer!

To be fair, that was probably added by Moffat because it's part of the season arc. If Chibnall was left to his own devices it wouldn't have happened. It even felt like an afterthought tacked on at the last minute and somebody thought "Let's stick a scene of 2020 Amy and Rory in at the beginning so that it seems like we planned this the whole time, and do whatever the opposite of foreshadowing is." Oh yeah, the opposite of foreshadowing is screwing with the audience, by say, killing off a character and then say j/k. Something Moffat and Chibnall have in common.

The Power of Three is an interesting one. Apparently the script was solid throughout with an ending that worked fine, but the production was a nightmare. The actor who played Cube Guy just refused to co-operate with the production team which meant the episode had to be hastily improvised and reworked, then "saved" in the edit. Hence, we were left with that ending. Ultimately, the flaws of this episode weren't down to Chibnall- at least when it came to the pacing of the last fifteen minutes.

"The women who fell to earth" and "the ghost monument" were awful. Bland story, dumb villains and poor character development. And what was with the Doctor giving up at the end of ep 2? The doctor doesn't give up! "Rosa" was an improvement, but that song at the end made me cringe. Overall, it just doesn't feel like Doctor Who. Jodie is a great actress, but she just doesn't come across as the Doctor. Let's be honest. The 12th doctor would have had a field day in 1950's southern America. Insults and ass kicking would have been prevalent.

I don't know where you're coming from with "poor character development," but I'd love to hear your justification.
@dwightk.schrute67436 жыл бұрын
@@theillusionist1494 The characters don't really have strong motivations for their actions and their lines really haven't given much insight into who they are. With Rose we knew who she was within 2 episodes. Caring, Has a boyfriend and mom, working class but dreams of adventure. Martha was pretty well fleshed out on her first episode. Smart, hardworking Medical student who has a crush on the doctor. Weird family life with bickering parents etc. We knew everything we needed about Donna and Jack in the first five minutes so I'm not going to go into it. Amy was shown in her first episode as the first person the 11th doctor met who helped him to adjust to his new body, is engaged, brave, and doesn't take crap from anyone. I still don't really know anything about these new companions. I know Yaz is a cop, but her high intelligence wasn't shown until ep 3. Ryan is extremely monotone and even the death of his grandma didn't seem to affect him that much. I like his step grandfather(can't remember his name). He was written well. We know about his background, how he and Ryan's grandmother met, and that he's extremely loving and protective. Hopefully they will be more fleshed out. New showrunners and actors take time to adjust.

They just don't understand what makes a good show. Character development. People are much more likely to forgive a weaker plot, if it has good character development. That's why the first two new Doctors were so good. Eccleston was bitter and angry about the time war, but slowly began to overcome those feelings with the help of Rose. When Tennant took over, he was over the time war, and fell for Rose, and she did him. They were ripped apart and that threw the doctor back a few steps. Now the doctor is a gazillion years old and doesn't care about anything other than Earth, because reasons.

What is wrong with you? Moffat had far more character development than RTD. RTD's characters were almost always the same, with an exception of Mickey and Donna. 9th Doctor was bitter and angry about the time war, he didn't overcome those feeling with the help of Rose. He was very bitter about Time War until the finale. There's not a single scene that proves your theory, if not The Doctor showed his anger about the Time War in the 2nd part of the series even more, in episodes like Dalek and the finale. Also "and doesn't care about anything other than Earth" obviously shows that you stopped watching the show and don't know what happens. I mean, World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls, Oxygen, Empress of Mars. It's just that the series was more Earth bound, just like series 1 was!!

I think the problem with judging Chris Chibnall purely on his 'Doctor Who' episodes is that we don't know how much of the writing was him and how much of it was Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat stepping in. Most of the episodes he wrote for the show were ideas given to him by the showrunner, in which he had to follow a set of guidelines. Even though the first two 'Torchwood' episodes he wrote, 'Day One' and 'Cyberwoman' are pretty dreadful, they were written at a time when the producers hadn't really figured out what the show was yet. And every other episode of Torchwood he wrote after those is pretty great in my opinion, 'Countrycide', 'End of Days', 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang', 'Adrift', 'Fragments' and 'Exit Wounds'. Plus, 'Broadchurch' shows his greatest strength I think, which is characterisation. He's pretty good at creating fairly compelling characters and structuring an overall story. If anything, I trust him more as a SHOWRUNNER than I should have done with Steven Moffat. Moffat is a great ideas man , whereas I feel Chibnall will be better at overseeing the series, rather than coming up with cool sci-fi ideas which try to impress you by being "clever" rather than consistent. Plus, he's using a writer's room for his era which I think is a good idea for 'Doctor Who' in the 21st century, as he can use the strengths of other writers to create a more concise and coherent show. I honestly think he's a pretty good choice really, but each to their own. At the end of the day, we'll just have to wait and see.

I get what you are saying, and it is very easy to fall into a trap that a female Doctor is bad because its a her, but there are good reasons why introducing a female doctor makes me, and other uneasy. The doctor has always been a guy, and in a show where everything changes that was a nice constant, but maybe thats just the autist in me. Secondly the character of the doctor has masculine characteristics but not in the alpha lumberjack body builder kind of way, more in the Clarkson era top gear kind of way. Through this he became a role model for men who wanted to be smart and weird, now its a girl its kinda sad to lose yet another one, the BBC has lost a fair few. Thirdly there are some vague references to the doctor having 2 parents, that they were different genders and that time lords were actually very similar physiologically to humans despite an increased IQ and an extra heart. The regenerative powers were actually a side effect of experimenting with time travel. This let us relate to him despite him being very alien. Now he's gender fluid across lifetimes and has more than thirteen lives, something that pisses me off more. Finally the conclusive point is that the Doctor was supposed to die, they set him up as being a finite creature that can live for thirteen lifetimes (around 1000 years), but they couldn't let him die so now they are going to find new ways to milk him for everything he's worth and that's not actually progressive. When they get bored of female doctors, the next one will be hermaphroditic, then it will be whatever minority is edgy enough to keep the show alive. The doctor will slowly become a messy pathwork of identities, until the original content no longer makes sense. Another 50 years of this to go...

Hey Erick :) Yes I am the most entitled brat you have come across, because I called hermaphrodites a minority, I didn't specify women were, I'm not retarded! I complained about declining representation of positive masculine figures in the BBC, your response is to criticize my complaints about representation, then complain about representation... pick one of those arguments carefully. Yeah there are a lot of guys in media, not all of them are positive masculine role models, there are increasing amounts of feminine role models, good for them I hope that continues. I would also like to keep some of my role models please, you can always make more characters, like River Song. I liked River Song, she wasn't the Doctor, she added a lot to his world and his character. My main point is that they aren't really doing this for the representation of minorities at all, so they will advertise the fuck out of it without actually coming up with a more clever character like Song. Doctor Who has had a ton of essential strong female characters recently, every companion has been fiercely independent and strong willed. You don't need to give the Doctor a sex change to better represent women, they are already 50% of the two main characters! Thanks for your comment Erik, always a pleasure Scarly 'Always' ? Missy is series 7, Late Matt Smith Era, part of this video is about how that writer wasn't as effective. I don't really count that as always, unless you have a better example, please don't count the comic relief Doctor Who by Rowan Atkinson as one that was oddly appropriate satire! This Video aged very well. It predicted exactly what Chibnall’s Dr Who would be like. It was a 100% accurate. The ticking down clock and the Doctor using the Sonic as a magic wand. It can do everything now. It was all there to see. The guy was indeed a hack. Moffat had written great stories before getting the Show Runners job but Chibnall? What made Moffat and the BBC think this was the guy to takeover? There isn’t anything in his 4 episodes that suggest any great talent. All his episodes are mid season filler. Functionary at best. Taking up space but that’s it. Ah well, it’s almost over now. Jodie’s last episode will feature the Daleks, Cybermen, The Master, two very old companions( female of course) Kate Stewart, Unit. The kitchen sink approach. Another mystery box with everything going at a hundred miles a hour to stop people thinking about the plot. It’s worked so far so why not again. And of course, the ticking down Clock. 5 years and thirty + most forgettable episodes in Dr Who history. It only there was a way of knowing how terrible it was going to be. The Power of Three😂 Well done Sir/ Madam, He/She, Her/ Him, They/ Them, Ze/ Ve.

Chances are they didn't want to take their chances on another writer and thought Chibnall was a safe choice. Though I do agree considering he's made some of the worst Doctor Who episodes he should've been pasted over, and let go right off the bat after his first or second episode of Doctor Who.

No wonder I dislike the New series of Doctor who. Jodie' s talent is being wasted. I also dislike those episodes you mentioned in this video. I wish we could have a good writer to replace him. I mean the Rosa Park episode, what was that guys motive for going back in that point in time to that point and why was he sent to prison. It was basically guy who came put of prison goes back in time to change it for shits and giggles I guess.

Joy Time Yeah, but since it was co-written by another writer, it wasn't as boring as the other Chibnall episodes. And Demons in the Punjab wasn't written by Chibnall at all, and it was the best episode of series 11 so far. I'm looking forward to episodes that aren't written by the fucking head writer. How ridiculous is that??
@Jimmy_Jones5 жыл бұрын

@@edadankmemes I agree, it is the best episode so far, very rich in story and it is written very well. There were no holes in the story, We even got a brief story of What happened to the Stenza and why they are no longer assassins. Which is more than the other episodes.
@rudewalrus56363 жыл бұрын
For me, Rosa and Demons in the Punjab represent throw-backs to the original intent of the show, as a way to explore history. In Rosa it appears that they took great pains to be very faithful to the historic events, and even the dialogue, and I found the episode very moving. The relative weakness of the villain was irrelevant. These were two of the most memorable episodes of the series, IMHO. I don't have a big problem with Whitaker's Doctor (although I hope she shows some growth), but by and large, the current writing is weak. (and WAY too much reliance on the sonic!)

If by "great" you mean not completely horrible then I suppose. But she has zero charisma and no stage presence. Also, the fact that she has to copy so many previous actors' interpretations of the role is very telling about hew own limited range.
@concon090905 жыл бұрын
@ Yes, and it's absolutely the actor's fault that she's doing it this way. It has absolutely nothing to do with the writers who were shitting themselves about having a female Doctor and decided to just play it safe. No, you're right, actors are exclusively responsible for how their characters come across.
@concon090905 жыл бұрын
@ "They don't control her performance or her *lines*." What are you talking about? The writers write the lines! They're writers! That's their *job!* Not only that, but they are responsible for her delivery! It will literally say in the script how an actor is supposed to say a line, so it hardly seems fair to pin that on her either! And yes, I'm aware that David Tennant masked his accent, I have no idea what that has to do with anything tho, since Capaldi turned in a fantastic performance while keeping his Scottish accent. The Doctor doesn't have to speak in the Queen's English, in fact they rarely do. Pinning the poor quality of S11 exclusively on the lead actor isn't just mistaken, it's wilfully, bafflingly ignorant. I havent a clue how you've come to the conclusion that Jodie is the showrunner, and responsible for every single aspect of the show and character, but I'd encourage you to re-examine whatever hare-brained assumptions lead to that.

When I heard Chibnall had the showrunner job I gave up on any thoughts of ever returning to the show. He's such a bad writer and I can't help but wonder if his casting of a woman is a VERY clever plan to distract people from his own shortcomings.

@@gryotharian 11 and 12 were when the man hating really began. Every episode had a line here, a joke there about how terrible men are. It was a shame Capaldi had those kinds of scripts to work with, all identity politics and mary sue female characters. And now look at it, ALL of the non-Chibs writers are 'political activist playwrights' with only one of them having genre TV experience, the rest being almost entirely ultra lefties using the show to signal how woke they are for digital back pats. Its such a shame.

Mikey is right. It started with moffat. The master: "is the future going to be all girl?" The doctor: "we can only hope" That's just one example although I'm sure there are many more. I don't think it was AS bad as when chibnall took over though. I think moffat had some good episodes under his belt to balance it out but chibnall has got nothing, he's running on empty. He's got one or two decent episodes to his name and one of them isn't even from season 11. It all started when moffat took over with 11 and that's where it slowly started to go down hill. 11 and 12 had some fantastic episodes though, even during their first seasons. Jodie has had arguably one decent episode which was resolution and that's about it. And most of that is down to the fact that they brought a single dalek back and made it scary again, the characters were still dreadful and the story wasn't exactly that mindblowing. It was just fun to see a powerful dalek again. That's the only decent episode she's got in her whole season. 11 and 12 at least had good episodes ranging from ok to fantastic. OP is right. I think chibnall is using the doctor's gender change so he doesn't have to put as much effort in by making the next male doctor stand out. He can just claim boobs and diversity and it will get him in the good books of the far left. Hiding his inability to write good characters behind a virtue signalling checklist. Bad characters thrown in for the sake of ticking the boxes. Characters like martha jones were good characters and that's where diversity worked, chibnall is just throwing stuff in there for the sake of it without putting any quality in.
