One of the PS2's earliest horror games! Fatal Frame takes a very different, and unconventional approach to the horror genre. But it's not without it's flaws.

It wasn't on the Echo Night series, either, and that one was a Halloween special, as well. I am definitely sad that one of the first horror games I've played outside of the OG Resident Evil games did not get the Halloween Special. But then again, I found this guy the same day he loaded Fatal Frame 2's video as I had previously looked up the Great Hall Scene for my sister as she was getting together an Occult Horror Villains panel where we went into details about some of the villains behind horror games.

"Project Zero" comes from "Zero" being "Rei" in Japan, "Rei" also being the word for "Ghost". Yu Yu Hakusho had a similar pun with the main character's "Rei Gun" attack, which was lost in translation.

Interesting note: this game series is more horrific the more you know about Shinto. To put it in extremely rough and broad terms, Shinto is concerned with purity, balance and life. All these dark, deadly rituals that involve spilling blood and mutilating people while still using Shinto imagery? It’s like preforming a human sacrifice by stabbing someone with a sharpened cross and invoking Jesus. By contrast, the protagonists preform a much more proper form of the religion, appeasing angry spirits and generally trying to set things back into balance... as well as some major Buddhist influence with the exorcism angle.
@ExValeFor
@ExValeFor 3 жыл бұрын
nah human sacrifice with a sharpened cross sounds about right for abrahamic religions
@Ajehy
@Ajehy 3 жыл бұрын
@@ExValeFor - I was using an example more of my readers would likely know, but just like in FF, the more you know about the religion the worse it is. Sacrificial animals, particularly lambs, have a long tradition in Judaism (not people though, don't believe the Blood Libel madness), and Jesus is called "the Lamb of God" because he died for the sins of humanity. He is literally the last sacrifice, you never need to make another one. Doing a human sacrifice in his name is backwards and nonsensical to most believers with a brain who have actually read the Bible. Now, I know there's probably some psychos out there who would do this. People use religion to justify all kinds of horrible things, regardless of the faith's actual teachings. The point is just that there are symbols that are more likely to disturb people based on cultural and religious background.
@RePhantomz
@RePhantomz 3 жыл бұрын
@@ExValeFor Pinning sacrifice only to abrahamic based religion is rather short sighted. ironically human sacrifice is more wide spread then you think. From aghori hinduism sect practice, the recorded ritual of rus viking burial, mayan sacrifices, human sacrifice in celt, hitobashira in shinto, and tumbal (similar to hitobashira) practiced in south east asia, etc.
@SonofSethoitae

The exorcism is particularly Buddhist, the Camera Obscura uses Siddham mantras to exorcise ghosts, probably from either Tendai or Shingon Buddhism. Not sure which mantra exactly though.
@raphaelledesma9393
@raphaelledesma9393 3 жыл бұрын
Indeed it seems strange to me now that you mentioned it. Shintoism and Buddhism which are Japan’s major religious influences don’t typically do human sacrifices. Shintoism’s rituals focus on purity as you said and they invoke the use of water, salt?, ropes as barriers. These rituals surely would be anathema to Shinto sensibilities? Ah btw, the Genesis story where Abraham was about to sacrifice his son while God at the last minute stopped him was supposedly meant to be a sort of prohibition against human sacrifice which the contemporaries of the Jews supposedly did. I’m unsure if you know the Wicker Man, it’s a film from the 70s where a devout Christian policeman goes to an isolated pagan island to find a missing girl. In the end, he was set up to be the human sacrifice for the island’s failing produce and he rightfully calls it out as murder.

The 'Based on a True Story' regards a Japanese urban legend surrounding supposed disappearances and dismembered body parts discovered in a mansion that actually exists on the outskirts of Tokyo. Calling it 'based on a true story' might be a bit of a stretch, but the in-game locale of the Himuro Mansion actually has a real-world counterpart! EDIT: (I've since investigated the previous claim I made, and am willing to apologize that I've found no clear evidence to the existence of the mansion, outside of a few tourism blogs online, so whether it actually exists is still up in the air. Sorry. Bad reporting here. x.x)

I actually have a funny story about how Fatal Frame 2 scared me the most any video game ever has. I was playing FF2 with my friend on Xbox around 15 years ago. It was about midnight. I had gotten to a part where I could explore the dead village and had gotten lost. I came across a bridge that connected between two houses. One of the houses was locked at this time so I was basically lost and didn't know where to go. I took out the camera to look around and see if there was any hints. After about a minute of looking around, my controller shakes violently, a blaring, distorted, low tone becomes nearly deafening loud and suddenly, a ghost of a woman with a twisted neck appeared right in front of me and killed me near instantly (I was low on health). My friend and I screamed. My dad runs out with his gun, scared for our lives. He sees us playing a video game and immediately demands us both to go to bed at this point. Good times lol

So I haven't seen anyone mentioned it yet, so I'll bring it up. So Miku and Mafuyu are actually descendants of Yae Munakata, previously known as Yae Kurosawa, the younger twin of Sae in Fatal Frame 2. After Yae escaped from the village, she noticed Sae wasn't behind her and went back, but before she entered the village, The Repentance happened that wiped out All God's Village, as well as her memory of it. She felt the connection between her and Sae was severed and broke down crying outside of the Village, but forgot why she was crying when Ryozo Munakata, the apprentice/assistant of Seijiro Makabe, the man who was beaten, lost his right arm, then thrown still alive into the Abyss to quell the Hell's Gate before Sae and Yae's ritual was gonna take place. He took her in from the promise he made with Itsuki, the boy trapped in the Store house in Fatal Frame 2 that did the ritual with his brother to gain Sae and Yae more time to plan their escape as Mitsuki was too weak to escape with Itsuki, to take the sisters away from the village and keep them safe. He hated himself for not being able to find Sae, but did take in Yae, who then he married later on. Ryozo and Yae then moved into Himuro Mansion as Ryozo was doing his research on the mansion, but didn't want to leave his recently fallen ill wife and daughter alone while he did his research. His research progressed quickly, but some time later, while playing Demon Tag, his daughter, Mikoto, was given the Camera by young Kirie, which soon led the the family's death from Yae overusing the camera to where she went insane and then hung herself after 9 days of failing to find Mikoto or her friends that went missing in the woods while playing Demon Tag, where all but she was killed by the spirit Long Arms and she was saved by Young Kirie, and Ryozo, thinking the Mansion was the cause of their death and disappearance, decided he needed to figure out how to fix and end the curse on it. Ryozo used the Blinded mask to unlock the Demon's Mouth, but was instantly grabbed and killed by Kirie. Mikoto was taken in by a family friend nearby, and when she grew up, got married and had Miyuki, who grew up and had Mafuyu and Miku. Long explanation, but hoped this explains some loose ends!

There's something I always wondered about these games. If I recall correctly the description for the camera obscura says something about how using it on ghosts forms a spiritual bond between you and that ghost over time the more photos you take of it. Is there any truth to this? Does it make certain ghosts pursue you if fought frequently?

Well I believe in ghosts so I'm gonna ignore that nonsense, but I believe the "Based on a true story" thing is referring to the fact that the mansion is real and the game's mythology is, I think, actual myths and legends surrounding it.

The thing I love the most about the old school horror games was the ambiance about them, they environment was always dark. The new ones don’t have that ambiance that much. I just tend to change the brightness on them because I miss that feeling. I just hope we get more horror/scary games in the coming years. Really excited for the reboot of Dead Space

I'm pretty sure the copy of this game I owned was haunted. When I brought it home, I never opened it until the next day when my friend was over. So imagine my surprise when I open the case and it's empty, then my friend pointed to my ps2 saying "Hey, what's that?" To which I see Fatal Frame's disc sitting in my ps2. My immediate reaction was to hurl the case across the room and avoid my copy of the game like the plague.

The first game in the series is legit the only horror game I have ever played which I then had trouble sleeping after playing it, so it made me smile when you mentioned how it actually scared you, too. :) Also, if you beat the game on Hard mode, you get a different ending where Mafuyu actually leaves with you, but this "good ending" isn't the canon one.

I had done some research a long time ago. Turns out, the events in the game, what happened in the Himuro Mansion in the game, minus the sacrifice, actually happened in a mountain estate in Japan. Apparently, the head of the household went insane and murdered everyone in that house, then himself. No one knows why this happened.

Rewatching in 2022 (eeyyyyy) and I'm a bit intimidated by the number of comments, so idk if anyone has mentioned this. 3:35 the buddha puzzle? I totally get your reasoning, and I don't blame you. But I feel like I have to defend it? Because the positions relate to the ritual this is about, where the sacrifice is literally torn apart. So if the person is laid out, the blood represents the limbs that are torn off, and it's why it also (mostly) looks like those limbs/parts aren't there. Sorry if this was explained already but seriously there are so many comments and I'm too attention deficit to bother with that. Great video thooo ❤ (Edit: Also, if you look at the blood splatter, it's in the shape of a person spread out. 😬)

I love these games, they were my introduction to horror games. I DESPERATELY want them to give Fatal Frame/Zeroshot the Resident Remake treatment and make a high quality remake, addressing some of the issues he mentioned which I do agree with even though I still love the games and don't mind the reading personally (though some things would've been better as more show, less tell I agree).

Just a heads up on Fatal Frame 2... The game had a remake on the Wii for Japan and PAL regions only, which is REALLY GOOD. Better gameplay, better atmosphere, and even expanded story moments. I would recommend playing that version, but if you choose to play the original, you should at least address the remake.

From what I understand, the "true story" aspect was to give the story that plausibility-feel to a Western audience, since the Japanese would already be more than familiar with the urban legends, folklore, and Shinto traditions in the game.

I know that this video is a year old, but I haven't seen comments talking about this (though I didn't look through all of them) so I thought I'd mention it. At 6:55-7:44, Nitro praised the game for how it reveals the presence of enemies through music and the vibrations in the controller, but he completely glossed over the fact that there is a small box at the bottom-right of the screen (or at the top of it in camera mode) that lights up when there's a ghost nearby. If it's a peaceful ghost (invisible or otherwise), the light is blue, while enemy ghosts are signaled by an orange light. No matter the color, the light gets brighter and fills more of the box the closer you get to the ghost, as well as if you're facing it.

Actually, Rad, the 'based on a true story' part of the title is in reference to the Himuro Mansion being a real haunted location in Japan where several murders were committed. Himuro Mansion is one of the most haunted locations in Japan and is a well known spot for thrill seeking tourists. On a completely different note, have you played Kuon Phase? If you like Fatal Frame, you may like this one. I am curious on your thoughts on Kuon Phase if you decide to play it.
