Fun fact the fog that caused that anticipation you mentioned wasn't a game feature it was there to cover up game engine limitations. You see the game was only able to render a short distance away from the main character so everything beyond that was a white void. They covered up this problem by putting fog everywhere. This means that is silent hill had been made on the PS2 or even PS3 it likely would not have had the fog and the Radio would simply tell you that an enemy was in sight.

@npc_blob16095 жыл бұрын
It is a feature. The developers weren't bound by PlayStation nature to be unable to show an entire town, it just would've lowered the framerate. It was an entirely planned decision on their part to use the fog as both an optimization technique and a horror technique. And if there were no fog, the radio would have no purpose.
@npc_blob16095 жыл бұрын
That's not the game's fault. My second-hand CD works perfectly on my PS1 and I've never heard anyone else mention your problem. The game is optimized fine, you either have a problem with your CD or your console. The lowest the game got to for me seemed like 15-20 FPS in the same part you mentioned, after the Floatstinger.
@martinweizenacker71295 жыл бұрын
@@npc_blob1609 The worst part of the game frame rate wise is when you're on the way to the lighthouse, right after the cutscene inside the boat. I'd say it barely ever touches 20 fps for that entire part. The game never freezes though, that's a problem with the disc or console.

I'd argue games like outlast and amnesia are scary but i have to agree. while running away from Chris in outlast can be a panic induced nightmare (especially if you don't know where the hell to go). Sure, being defenseless is one thing, but the immersion is kind of broken for me when my character runs into an axe or something they could clearly use as a weapon but don't... for no reason at all. this is why i prefer the resident evil 3/resident evil 7 approach. Where you are defenseless but not for lack of trying. You can fight back and waste some ammo to temporarily escape from the enemy. not only does it add a new level decision making to the horror but the fear of facing a seemingly unkillable monster is still there. So now, you don't have to run away, but merely choose to run away. And its terrifying.

Oh god, I love you for that bit about storytelling in modern games. Go ahead and use the "lore" method to add additional backstory and worldbuilding if you'd like, but do NOT try to tell the game's entire story through optional walls of text. Dark Souls is especially guilty of this and yet people praise it as "storytelling in gaming done right" and "telling story through gameplay." Because obviously stopping all of the game's momentum and having the player read paragraphs of "story" is very conducive to gameplay.
@Aces008 жыл бұрын
황원 "CUTSCENES stop the game's momentum because it divides the line between gameplay and story ... claiming it is 'cinematic' which is similar to what you are advocating." Excellent strawman friend. I never made a claim about cutscenes. I dislike games that are heavy on cutscenes as well. "Incorporating the story into environments, NPC, game mechanics, and small details seamlessly blurs the line and it is a better way of taking advantage of the medium." Agreed. "the environmental storytelling like Dark Souls" Yeah, no. Dark Souls is a terrible example of "environmental storytelling." The vast majority of storytelling comes from item descriptions. You must literally stop all gameplay, navigate menus, and read paragraphs of text in item descriptions if you want to have any idea of what is going on. I personally cannot think of a worse method of storytelling; even "cinematic" playable cutscene games at least partially integrate story and game. With the Dark Souls method of lore, story and game are 100% divided. That's not even to mention the fact that the game has next to no story of its own and instead relies on backstory. There's little motivation story-wise for any of your actions (none at all if you don't bother with reading those item descriptions). Actual, action-driving story is instead substituted with lore-based backstory.
@XadePsyconic7 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I respect subtle, non-intrusive, and indirect storytelling more than forced, cinematic storytelling. There ARE cinematic games loaded with forced storytelling that I enjoy and even love, such as the Metal Gear Solid series, but the approach that Dark Souls takes is just so much more satisfying for me. You state that having to stop and read paragraphs of text is the real momentum killer for the player, but I believe the key benefit is that it provides the player the decision to look through it at their own pace -- you can either read it gradually throughout the game, read it all in one sitting later on when you feel like doing some in-depth reading, or you can even just ignore it entirely and just enjoy the gameplay. And then we have games like Mass Effect, which take both a cinematic AND optional approach by adding a codex of info you unlock throughout the game and can read through at your own pace. I also enjoy this method of storytelling. EDIT: And yeah, I understand this comment chain was started over a year ago, but I wanted to give my take because I'm a jerk who has to make his worthless opinions public.

Ace Personally, I don’t mind it. I think it comes down to a matter of preference.
@onex78056 жыл бұрын
+jackthegamer "today horror is by the jumpscare and running away from monster..." There's nothing wrong with 'running away' gameplay, but the player needs solutions to get around. You can't kill the monster in Alien Isolation and SCP Containment Breach, but you have a diverse set of tools and mechanics to fight back, sneak and escape. Even Amnesia which populated this style of horror provided multiple ways to deal with the monster, while Slender and Outlast are terrible since the only option is 'run away.'
@Walamonga13136 жыл бұрын
Ace The story of Dark Souls is pretty simple, as long as you pay attention to the cutscenes/dialogue you'll know what to do (Chosen Undead has to fulfill his fate as Lord of Cinder->Rings Bells of Awakening to access the Gods' City->Receives Lordvessel to access the Kiln->Fills vessel with powerful souls to match Gwyn's power->Immolate yourself/Let the fire fade). That's the story ultra simplified. The lore though is all about the background events, but you don't even have to know them game completion. It's there if you're interested in the world but the player is never forced to read them. You can just go in there and enjoy the gameplay.
@foxplays_7 жыл бұрын
I am with you on story telling, reading notes sucks. Notes should enhance the story and lore, not be the entire game. What do you think about the way the Dark Souls story is told? As I love it in that game. And you hit the nail on the head with the music of Silent Hill, the music in Outlast was a joke
@onex78057 жыл бұрын
"Notes should enhance the story and lore" They do. Literally. You don't even have to read them. It's a secondary storytelling that enhances the main story which is told through cutscenes, level design and voice over. If you think they suck, you must hate System Shock then.
@HorrorSquidCap7 жыл бұрын
The story in Dark Souls is really simple, and most of the item descriptions are just lore and other filler. No main story found there.
@troin39256 жыл бұрын
Fox Plays Personally, I think it’s a matter of preference with the notes bit. The same goes for the music. Yes, Silent Hill’s music is _far_ scarier, but Outlast was clearly going for something more orchestral than Silent Hill.
@marthia80156 жыл бұрын
The primary difference is that the story/lore in Dark Souls is completely optional. You don't need to understand Artorias' whole backstory to enjoy the fight against him, and even if you have no clue what's going on, you can gather that he is a very skilled knight who is now a mindless, corrupted monster by the way he is animated alone. Dark Souls is still a good game if you ignore the story entirely and go into it with the oldschool "story doesn't matter, I'm here to fight shit" mindset. In horror games on the other hand, you go into it to experience a narrative, so you have to read everything to really get the game. Horror games usually aren't fun to play, so the story should make up for it, but if the story is hard to reach, it can't. Dark Souls also still has some emotional moments even if you don't understand what's going on. There is the unease when the Firelink Shrine bonfire suddenly doesn't work anymore, there is the end of the Solaire's quest, the moment when you reach Anor Londo for the first time and the depressing environments up to that point give way to a beautiful city, or even just small moments like when you die to a difficult boss, and on the way back from the bonfire, you spot the spirits of other players stuck at the same part of the game as you. Or when Sif starts limping, but you still need to kill him.

The action of running away isnt scary, but the feeling of "Am i going to get away?". Its also "where should i go?". And when hiding, in stuff like amnesia and outlast, there is a chance that the monster will find and see you.
@crysisman098 жыл бұрын
but again those are weak, i dont feel scared, especially not in outlast, you know why? its so easy to get away from the enemies! Especially against that doctor, cant remember his name though, but you can actually just keep running in circles between 2 of the rooms and the hallway, he will actually lose you, only because you run from hallway, to room, to room, to hallway and keep repeating it! I really must say, but jumpscare horror games are weak! which is essentially what amnesia and outlast is, they depend on that jumpscare to scare you, because they dont have any other way than to make the enemy that will chase you jump at you! its essentially the same reason why FnAF isnt scary, it relies too much on jumpscares, which is just weak!
@crysisman098 жыл бұрын
Nire so basically, you can have that feel throughout the whole day, since you know that from the moment the day starts, they are after you, till the day ends! And then it only ends with either a victory or a jumpscare! Now the jumpscares, everything animal, has been made to react in a split second after getting startled! When a jumpscare comes, the reason you think you get scared is because of the adrenaline kicking in! You dont really get scared by jumpscares, its just the way your body reacts to something so sudden! While you could say sister location have a bit of atmosphere, its still not enough for me to call it a scary game, because like always, the games always rely on those jumpscares to "scare" you! Now compare the atmosphere to games like Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Fatal Frame, Siren and so many more that are considered scary! I think you can see the difference of the atmospheres :)

What I love about this music is that it doesn’t try to “build tension.” Like the Dead Space comparison, which uses songs that often slowly/subtly build in noise and detail and such to convey a sense of dread and danger approaching. In Silent Hill, it’s just this droning disorienting white noise. The gameplay and scenario builds the tension, this music just amplifies it tenfold instead of trying to create more.

I like your point about collectibles in games. The story shouldn't be entirely told through them. Backstory for the collectibles, main story for events/cutscenes. 100% agree. Also, I love your point about music in horror games. Ever since I saw the first Texas Chainsaw movie, I thought "Man, horror is much better when there's no music." If you enter a room in a game to violin lead-ups or scary songs, you know how to feel. You know what's coming. But if there's just a metal scraping or a constant deep booming wherever you are, there's this uncertainty and disorientation to it. You don't know how to feel through those "musical queues," which is way scarier in my opinion. Being in the dark with no sound but your breath and the monster's footsteps, that's real fear. Just my opinion. Great video!

"The story shouldn't be entirely told through them. Backstory for the collectibles, main story for events/cutscenes. 100% agree." I still remember gamers riling against MGS4, Modern Warfare 2 and Max Payne 3 for rightfully calling them out for being a shitty film, but suddenly when the video game started to take advantage of its medium, they suddenly demand the storytelling how mid-2000s to early 2010s handled the narrative. Fuck the cutscene and scripted events.

As someone who first-played the game a month ago I can say that the game aged EXCELLENT: Tank controls were an issue for me in RE, but in SH I feel that they are pretty smooth and easier to control and react. The risk-reward combat is excellent, the sound and visual desing adds tons to the experience and the puzzles and story telling feel rewarding in the way that you really feel progression and success. I'm now in the nowhere part of the game, excited for almost finishing all this journey and willing to play the rest of the franchise The game looks outdated but doesn't feel like that, it still holds up because the "limitations" added to the experience. That's what you call smart game design ❤️

I’m a newcomer to the series and i have completed SH2 and SH4. As i’m writing this comment i have just completed SH1 twice, first time getting the bad ending and the second getting the good+. What i don’t expect from this game is that it’s difficulty. So far this is the hardest SH game i played (i haven’t played 3 though but working on to that) the enemies are relentless, they will chase you and hit you like a mad dog. I think i died about 30 times playing the first time on normal, the enemies are not what i expected coming from SH2 & SH4 (SH1 monsters makes those two games’ monsters pathetic by comparison).

Excellent review! I like how you really boil it down to the essentials. You seem to capture every imporant aspect of the game and why it's good - and not just the easy to see important aspects - and treat it all very scientifically. I'm very much looking forward to the sequel videos.

One of the tracks in Secret of Mana is called “The Curse”, and starts off with a distant sound of rushing or the echoes of a huge beast’s footfalls. Then banging on wooden surfaces, and a mournful, unearthly howl rises, all while the footfalls and bangs continue. Always made me feel so uneasy. And no strings anywhere. Strings in horror can be good, but a lot of the time they’re just ear-splitting and annoying. Another horror instrument I like is the bassoon, like the track in Philosopher’s Stone, “Fluffy’s Harp”.

Hopefully there will be a 25th anniversary remake of this game. Not a remaster since the atmosphere of this game owes a lot to the graphical style.

Well I kinda don't get your opinion about Amnesia. For the first time I played it, I was literally scared. I couldn't even progress in some parts and that feeling when you are hiding, but you don't know if the enemy is gonna come over or move along is creating a good terror and panic feeling, cause you don't know what's gonna happen next. Collecting notes is tiresome and boring, I agree, but for me it doesn't kill the whole game experience and it is my number one fav horror game. I really enjoy this really old, renaissance, gothic or whatever atmosphere. Tho I agree about the music in horror movies and games. So far Silent Hill series until Homecoming have the most original soundtrack in the entire horror history. Don't know about the new upcoming Silent HillS game and I already am disappointed that they added an S at the end, but I won't say much until I play it. Tho I doubt it will be as good as the first one tho. The first one will always be big champion and lay in our horror loving hearts. Among the new horror games, I enjoy Alien Isolation a lot currently. It has almost the same vibe as Amnesia, but it also has this panic effect tho like in Silent Hill, for example when you run out of ammo for your revolver or fuel for the flamethrower. Also they added the creepy effect to the androids. God those Seegson Synthetics aka Working Joes, are the worst, especially for me when I have the phobia of such mannequin, robot things that slightly resemble human. Not even the Alien is scary like the androids. XD Also speaking of music again, they used a big part of the original Alien movie soundtrack and even the game music is made like the original 80s Alien movie music which I just have to applaud to.

+황원 (포키) Not quite. In Amnesia you literally have to search drawers and cabinets for pieces of paper with long chunks of text on them. Shattered Memories does it in a much more streamlined, less text heavy, and realistic way that I would argue is much less taxing to go through.

What is wrong with the usage of violin? It existed long before(even in Psycho) badly made early access horror games because it worked.

There's nothing "wrong" about violins in horror, as a matter of fact it is one of the most effective instruments to use for a creepy and unsettling vibe. It's the over usage and total reliance on the violin in modern horror that's the problem. Almost every horror movie out nowadays has violin music, but they use it in every fucking scene, and they use the same short sharp tone for every single jump scare. If used correctly, (like in Psycho) the violin can make for masterfully crafted scenes of utter terror and dread, but when a movie uses that short sharp tone out of nowhere on a jump scare where a fucking cat jumps into frame, or when the characters friend grabs their shoulder from behind for no reason, that's what gives the violin the negative reputation. So when it's used to score a great suspense or horror film it greatly makes the scene better, but when it's used just to produce a loud screeching sound for a shitty jumpscare in a shitty jump scare filled "horror" film, that is what is "wrong" with the violin.

It's not the only great track made for these games using a dentist's drill sound. In Silent Hill 2 you have the track that plays when you end up jumping into a mine shaft; "Warped Mind". It's one of my favourites, and an unexpected opener for an Akira Yamaoka concert I was lucky enough to be able to attend once. :)
