@@RocketSwimming thank you. So far, my biggest challenge has to do with breathing especially the part where I bring my head or mouth out of the water. Do I breathe in to fill my lungs again? Do I breathe in and out (and also do it fast enough to stay afloat)? Also, if I feel as if I'm running out of air, what does that mean? What am I doing wrong? Thanks
@stlavpnut8 ай бұрын
I am learning how to properly swim. I took lessons last month and I'm at the hardest part now, you guessed it, breathing. I started implementing this in the pool today. I was breathing every 4-6 strokes and was gasping for air towards the end of a 2nd lap. I tried every 2 strokes this morning and it seems easier, but have a ways to go. The one issue I seem to have when I come up for a breath is getting water in my nose. Before I swam with my head in the water, I kept it above the water and my breathing matched my body movement, slowly. I was a turtle, but could swim 1/2 mile. I did a sprint triathlon doing that last year. I've finished 7 marathons (not fast), but this breathing in the water thing is a challenge :)

Great progress so far! Take it easy and stay confident. When you come out of water to take a breath, blow the bubbles out of your mouth and nose and breathe in only with your mouth. Also, breathe behind you! Watch the video kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmmQc3x7mK-Dq6c&lc

Hello and thank you for posting these great tips !!! I am 61 and I have had some lessons recently. Never taught to swim before. I have been going to the YMCA two to three times per week practicing what I have watched on videos and what the instructor has me do. This is where I am : I want to swim laps in freestyle yet not understanding this - if I put on fins, I don't have much problem with breathing or anything else - however when I take off the fins, I go ok until I attempt a breath and then everything falls apart, I lose my speed, legs sink, and I just fall apart. My instructor says "don't worry about the kick " ??????? Yet i feel this is wrong. Why do I fall apart from fins or pool buoy to no fins or pool buoy. She says my catch is fine and my kick has improved tremendously, I breath with one goggle in one out. Working on rotation.

@RocketSwimming Жыл бұрын
You're welcome! In breaststroke, it's generally recommended to exhale through your mouth. Exhaling through your nose can sometimes create more resistance and make it difficult to fully release air. However, everyone has their preferences and comfort levels, so feel free to experiment and find what works best for you. The important thing is to focus on maintaining a consistent and controlled exhalation throughout the stroke. Keep practicing and adjusting as needed. Happy swimming! 🏊♂️😊

Sir I get an urge to breathe again and again. What to do? I am not able to cover more than 15 m distance. My aim is to cover 50 m distance without stopping
@RocketSwimmingАй бұрын
I completely understand how frustrating that can be. It's great that you're aiming to cover 50m without stopping! Breathing in swimming is all about finding the right rhythm. Try practicing your breathing technique outside of the water first. Inhale deeply through your mouth and exhale slowly through your nose. Once you're comfortable, try this in the water. Remember, it takes time and practice, so be patient with yourself. You've got this! If you keep at it, you'll reach your goal in no time.
@sharonberg48172 жыл бұрын
Why do you recommend breathing slightly behind you? You said that, but gave no reasoning for it. I've always thought it should be with your eyes looking slightly in front of you, so your neck isn't bending but rotating. I'm no doctor, I see it as keeping your spine in alignment.
@RocketSwimming2 жыл бұрын
It's more easier to breathe behind you instead of front or side. It also prevents water rushing down the mouth because water flows backwards when you swim forwards. - Niraj (CDO)

@RocketSwimming5 ай бұрын
@@defafa9249 Hey there! It sounds like you're working hard to figure out the breathing part of swimming, and that's fantastic! One thing to keep in mind is that when you're floating on your back, your body naturally wants to stay at the surface of the water due to buoyancy. So, even if your mouth is open and you're talking, you should still be able to maintain your position on the water. As for the breathing pattern while on your back, it's common to take slow, relaxed breaths to help you stay calm and comfortable. Try taking deep breaths in through your nose and exhaling slowly through your mouth. This can help you stay buoyant and relaxed while floating on your back. It's normal to feel like you're sinking when you open your mouth to breathe, but with practice and focus on maintaining a relaxed body position, you'll improve over time. Keep at it, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any more questions or need further assistance!

I'm really glad that you found this video helpful! It's totally normal to feel a bit nervous about swimming without a kickboard, especially if you're just starting out. Breathing can definitely be a big part of that, since it's such a crucial aspect of freestyle technique. One thing that might help is to practice your breathing separately from your strokes. You can do this by holding onto the side of the pool and practicing your breathing technique, without worrying about your kicks or arm movements. This can help you get more comfortable with breathing and build up your confidence before you try swimming without the kickboard. Another tip is to focus on slow, steady breathing while you're swimming. Try to take deep breaths in between strokes, and exhale steadily through your nose and mouth. This can help you maintain a relaxed, controlled rhythm and keep your anxiety at bay. Remember, swimming is all about practice and patience. Keep working on your breathing and technique, and don't be too hard on yourself if it takes a little time to get comfortable without the kickboard. You'll get there eventually! Good luck, and happy swimming! - Niraj (CDO)

I do all these yet my freestyle kick is so bad that I offer so much resistance and eventually legs/feet sink!
@RocketSwimming Жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thanks for sharing your experience about your freestyle kick. It's great that you've been working on your technique, but it can be frustrating when certain aspects of your swim aren't improving as quickly as you'd like. One thing to keep in mind is that the freestyle kick is often one of the trickiest parts of the stroke to master. It requires a combination of strength, flexibility, and coordination, so it's not uncommon to struggle with it, even if you've been working on other aspects of your technique. One thing you might want to try is breaking the kick down into smaller parts and focusing on each one individually. For example, start by practicing your ankle flexibility and trying to point your toes as much as possible when you kick. Then, work on your leg strength by doing exercises like flutter kicks and kicking with a kickboard. It's also important to make sure you're not fighting against the water with your kick. Rather than trying to power through the water, try to focus on keeping your kick smooth and streamlined. This can help you maintain a better body position in the water and prevent your legs from sinking. Finally, don't be afraid to ask for help! A coach or experienced swimmer can often offer valuable tips and feedback that can help you improve your technique and kick more efficiently. Keep at it, and good luck with your swimming! - Niraj (CDO)

OMG thank you for sending me over to this informative video. I am the person who has commented on your videos previously as I am in a beginning swimming class with 7 people, but I am the Only true Non-swimmer. Nothing was covered regarding breathing so this is BEYOND helpful to me. I will get to class early on Sunday and practice before class begins. The instructor was surprised last week when she said you seem to know how to tread water. (My secret was I followed instructions from one of your videos and practiced over and over as she spends her time with the others who are swimmers). I will get to class early and practice these breathing exercises. I can't wait to incorporate this valuable info on Sunday.

WOW!!! I am really glad that you love the videos and the channel so much. It must be a proud moment when your instructor was surprised by your progress. I am really happy to read your success and how fast you are learning. Don't forget to update me when you swim on Sunday!

the pineapple drill seems like an advanced technique on its own. like how do you roll to your back that smoothly? feels like witchcraft to me at the moment lol. thanks for another awesome vid though.

You're welcome! You should try rolling on your back drills. Get close to a wall where you can hold something with your hands and then practice rolling on your belly and your back. Let me know how it goes for you. - Niraj (CDO)

I don't understand why it's called a pineapple drill.
