I struggled for a few months to tread water. My intructor would tell me to relax. When you have never relaxed in deep water, its almost impossible to know what that feels like though. I came to realize (after getting tired and deciding to keep going because I so frustrated with the whole thing) that after your body drops down to that point where you are neither sinking nor floating, that is the sweet spot of rest and relaxation, and all I need to do at that point is to slowly move my arms and legs until I got my nose and mouth above water and then continuing at that pace. Without this realization, I couldnt gauge how fast or slowly I should be moving my arms and legs. This float point is different for everyone. The only way to find it is to take a breath and allow oneself to sink (without moving). Once you get to that point, you just slowly begin the arm and leg movements until high enough to breathe. Knowing this would've saved me so much frhstration.

Thanks so much Jonny...most regular swim instructors don't teach treading in water the way you did. Also, I think egg beater kicking style is quite difficult for beginners, i.e. left leg rotating clockwise and vice-vera...it's hard to maintain the rhythm correctly.

Absolutely, treading water can be challenging and exhausting, especially when you're just starting. It's a skill that takes time and practice to master. You've highlighted an important point about relaxation - staying in control and keeping a relaxed body can make a significant difference in how effectively you tread water. Keep up the practice and you'll continue to improve! I always suggest that floating is far better than treading water in survival situations.

@@RocketSwimming Thanks. I like using the term whoosh when talking about the arms in treading, elementary and “regular” backstroke to emphasize the power part of it. The younger ones like the whoosh word anyway. The two things I am going to be in a lot of trouble when the chance to teach comes up are breaststroke and backstroke crossover turns. We didn’t do those turns when I was swimming and breaststroke technique has totally changed. I guess I will have to teach myself before teaching others! 😀

@RocketSwimming
@RocketSwimming 4 ай бұрын
First tip is to swim in lanes. Ask others to free up the lane you're swimming. Other thing you could try is practicing controlled breathing and staying calm whenever you're in the water. This can help you maintain composure and think clearly, even in unexpected situations. Additionally, practicing water treading regularly, both in calm situations and with distractions, can build your confidence and muscle memory, making it easier to transition into that position when needed. Always be aware of your surroundings in the pool and try to maintain a safe distance from other swimmers to minimize the chances of collisions.

It sounds like you might be experiencing some difficulty with maintaining buoyancy while treading water. This can happen due to a variety of factors including body position, leg movement, and breathing. Here are a few tips that might help you improve your treading water technique: Body Position: Make sure your body is in a slightly upright position with your chest and head above the water. Keep your back straight and engage your core muscles to help maintain balance. Leg Movement: Use a gentle and steady scissor kick motion with your legs. This can help you create enough upward force to stay afloat. Avoid kicking too vigorously, as this can lead to fatigue. Arm Movement: You can use small circular motions with your hands or keep them still by your sides. Your arms can assist in maintaining balance and stabilizing your body. Breathing: Try to relax and maintain a steady breathing pattern. You can exhale through your nose or mouth while your face is above water and take a quick breath when you need to. Keeping calm can prevent unnecessary energy expenditure. Practice: Treading water can take some time to master, especially if you're new to swimming. Practice regularly in shallow water until you become more comfortable with the technique. Remember, staying afloat in water is a combination of technique and comfort. Don't hesitate to use a flotation aid (like a kickboard) while you work on improving your treading water skills. Keep practicing and adjusting your technique until you find what works best for you.

Thanks mate. I need to tread water in overalls for 10min straight after a timed 200m swim (also in overalls). I tried today and died in the ass and now found this video. Keen to get back in the pool and give it another go.

You've got this! With practice and the right techniques, you'll improve your stamina and be able to tread water in overalls for 10 minutes straight. Keep working on it, and don't forget to focus on your breathing and staying relaxed in the water. If you have any more questions or need further guidance, feel free to ask. Good luck with your training! 🏊‍♂️💪

I’m at Marine Corps Recon school and water is a big part of the training. We will be doing up to like 40min tread sessions in camies and even be passing around a 10lb brick. We will also be told to take our hands out of the water, elbows out of the water, and have our hands behind our heads (under arrest)

One thing that is rarely mentioned is being in some type of cardiovascular shape, I know how to swim but today I almost drowned, I did not realize how badly out of shape I was. While I was swimming I got tired very quickly and while I was still treading water it was still chipping away all my energy little by little. Good thing a couple with a float was nearby.

I don't know for the small movement...i learn my student to do a large movement and not fast to not get tired, and a large mouvement with the arms cover more surface so you stay more easily on place.

While watching the American Women's Water Polo team competing at the Paris Olympics, howthe heck do water polo players constantly having their heads ABOVE the water the ENTIRE length of the game without doing much with their arms - their legs aren't kicking hard like the 100M freestyle, if I were to do that, I'd sink to the bottom of the water & probably drown in no time. Tell me how I can stay afloat WITHOUT doing much likethese players who no doubt need to conserve their energies for the game - both on Offense & Defense ❗❗
@RocketSwimming
@RocketSwimming Ай бұрын
Great question! Water polo players make it look effortless, but there’s definitely some skill and technique behind it. Staying afloat with minimal arm and leg movement involves a few key things: proper body positioning, core strength, and buoyancy control. Another tip is that try leaning forward while breathing constantly. Breathing is the key here and not staying fully vertical. You also need strong legs and stamina. It’s like anything in swimming-practice and technique make a big difference. Keep at it, and you’ll find yourself becoming more comfortable and efficient in the water.

There are at least a couple of videos that talk about leaning BACK while treading water. I am just learning to find my "sweet spot" so not sure what works but my 8 year old learned on his own and when I look at him, he is indeed leaning forward. Just comes naturally.
@RocketSwimming

Leaning back is when you transition into back float. Naturally, our body will want to lean forward to increase the surface area.

I cannot swim and I cannot see what you’re doing underwater. This is why I can’t swim because everybody that tries to show me is doing what you’re doing. It would be nice to have an underwater camera so we can get a feel for what you’re doing, but thanks anyway.
