I suppose in the vast sea of Linux distros, it's difficult to make yourself stand out....but if you are too radical then you introduce new areas to have problems in! A good review Gary, I'll stick with Free\SD 🙂

From what he posts on KZbin it looks like Gary doesn't actually use FreeBSD on the desktop because his Windows software doesn't run on it. Anyway I'll stick to Linux because my hardware is not that well supported on FreeBSD but I like it a lot better than Windows an macOS.

Hey Gary, We all have our tastes and preferences. I wasn’t very impressed either despite being a KDE fan. However, I’m sure that it has its fans. Nice review. Funny that the AppImage software was so slow. It should be a download, chmod, and a cp u less their server is slow and clunky. Shrug.

@@ザウアークラウトマン Well that's a shame... if that's true and he doesn't use software that can run on FreeBSD.

I wonder, what is the purpose of this distro, cause seemed too generic. For Linux I go with Void GNU/Linux, simple and light with base install. But what I'm really liking to use is OpenBSD, currently I have It on a web server and in a Thinkpad T420 that I as a Second daily driver (at uni, and on rough place). If I was able to watch Netflix in OpenBSD I would only use It. For its: 1-Secure by default 2-Lightweigth 3-Has the best documentation ever 4-Vibrant and active comunnity 5-Easy and fast installation 6-Easy guided disk encryption at installation 7- Stable and current flavors 8- Certain releases twice a year which always bring some very interesting things 9- Available for many architetures (i386, arm64, sparc64, amd64, riscV and some others that i don't recall now) 10- Fun artwork

Chimera Linux (freebsd userland) 5. Adelie Linux (no gnu alpine similar) 6. Crowz linux easy and light 7. Joborun obarun with runit and simplicity 8. Plop linux (only a few know it) 9. Tinycore linux awesomeness and simplicity 10. Dragora Gnu Linux (libre and see yourself)

Gary, I recently started looking into Illumos and its down streams like SmartOS. I was wondering your opinion as someone much more well versed in the Unix family. The curiosity for me stems from all the great things that were invented at Sun Micro that continue in Illumos.

You're on the right track mate :) maybe not for the desktop, but on Servers, illumos is a beast.

Nitrux install keeps failing no matter if i do a VM install or a physical install. Is there some bug in its ISO image? Has anyone encountered this?

I installed it last night, it was interesting, similar to your experience. It claims to be based on Debian, but it is not like any Debian distros that I have used. A number of applications that I used on Debian are not available to me here. I really do not like the KDE desktop, much happier with GNOME. No, do not suggest MATE, cannot stand that either. I would have been happier if it had XFCE instead. Like you, there is a learning curve for me here. Thanks goodness that I have Manjaro and Linux Mint on separate hard drives in this Mac Pro.

I feel that this distro is the Father of ubuntu means Ubuntu is trying to making their whole distro use snap as package installation instead of Debian Packages in the future and Nitrux OS do the same as it uses Appimage just like Ubuntu snap thing

I have tried the recent version 3.3.0 on a USB key and also I was not impressed. KDE and Firefox segmented and screen when black 2 times while just doing basic stuff. This is an immutable OS and you will not be able to use apt or pkcon or any other package manager. You have to install a new root image over the last one when upgrading to a new version. I have not found how to install 'neofetch' 'htop' or basic stuff that should be included with the OS. The idea seems good but not ready for production and not well documented yet. Stay on your actual linux distro ...

You picked one of the most ambitious Linux distributions with one of the most heavily modified KDE desktops around. Pretty much everything is set up in a unique way, drastically different than everything else. Personally I don't like it either and I think they went way too far, but apparently some people like it and anyone is free to experiment. Probably not a good distro to play around with if you want to try something good for normal everyday use, there are so many others you would have been better off giving a try. Apparently the latest release ditches traditional package management entirely for AppImage and Flatpack. I'm overall not a fan of their philosophy, from desktop to core system. There are so many better Debian and Ubuntu based distros out there.
