Wow, he's really good. Nice dynamics contrast and sound texture.

For any learners, be aware that at 4:19 (measure 134), the top chord of the phrase should be a minor, not major
@vandorn502 жыл бұрын
Many European players seem to have the same edition that contains A Major. I'm trying to find any edition that has the Major instead of the minor, but everything I've found has minor. It makes more sense as an A min chord. I've seen French players play Major, Asian players play Major, etc. [I've just done a little IMSLP search and found some answers] but the chord does, in fact, seem to be a minor chord in the earliest editions. It is an A min in August Fraemcke's edition, Clemens Schultze's Braunschweig edition, while being **A Major** in B. Schott's Söhne edition (1886). The answer would seem to lie later in the piece, when the motif occurs in octaves in the left hand, with arpeggios in the right. The C# doesn't appear until the end in the l.h. melody, which seems to confirm that the chord should be A min at mm.134. At any rate, the Schott edition is later and I'm guessing the inaccurate one.

@@vandorn50 wow, dude, thanks for such a thorough investigation! I initially thought it was just an overlooked error during recording but then realized a player of his caliber wouldn’t leave such a glaring mistake in a studio recording. I also didn’t even realize the same motif to have come back in the LH later-presumably during the intermediate section between the two RH arpeggio run sections. For a relatively well-known piece of the repertoire, there seems to be many such discrepancies across editions-not solely this one, but also a missing G natural in the opening in one of the IMSLP scores that shows up in a modern printed score.

@@jajefan123456789 Ooh, now I'm gonna have to look for that! I'm guessing it's in the l.h. accompaniment under the second descending octaves.

Excellent technician, but his some of his tempo choices reflect a lack of musical maturity. Hopefully he'll record this again in another 20 years.

Can you be more precise and maybe give us timestamps of parts that you consider he played at unsuitable tempo ? I'm just curious, I don't mean to attack your point of view
@gil-evens5 жыл бұрын
Also I think it may be bold to challenge someone's musical maturity based on his tempi choices when Glenn Gould plays the Mozart sonatas as fast and dry as a Bach fugue. Compare his recordings with Maria João Pires' for example, it's a totally different approach but we can't say that one or the other is wrong even if Gould plays 1.5x faster.
@adamalitennis5 жыл бұрын
@@gil-evens I have to completely disagree with Aaron Wolf on his maturity. While not my favorite performance, it is VERY clear that Niu's interpretation is well thought out and completely his. His diminuendos are used to great effect and I think the tempi he chose suited his interpretation well. I really enjoy his use of contrasting textures, although I personally think it's used just a little to much. My main criticism is that while his instantaneous changes in dynamic were great, I felt a little lost without any overarching dynamic phrasing.
@SHUKU08204 жыл бұрын
I could perhaps understand what you mean... you really like his rendition but just you prefer slower music, so you'd like to wait 20 yrs for him to grow old and calm down instead of looking for other videos, though your wording might not be fair. For me..., well, my only complaint is too much reverb; otherwise perfect.
