23:10-24:25 gives me chills. Nixon was far ahead of his time on addressing privacy concerns with emerging technology. It's clear he envisioned the dangers of losing privacy rights with respect to personal data and use of our personal data by growth of technology systems (i.e. the internet, google, facebook, amazon, etc.)

Fun fact: In an interview with Barbara Walters he was asked if he regretted that he didn't burn the tapes and he stunned her by saying "I probably should have"! Lol

I think only about 50% of folks vote but 100% complain. I am obsessed by this fascinating, sad man. He did create EPA, which is awesome--rare for a Republican to do something like that. Many say he would be considered a moderate Democrat now. He was a mess but he wasn''t a loudmouth, tacky bully like Trump. BUT he was lying over and over here, which is despicable.
@avatarwan58244 жыл бұрын
Trump really makes him seem like a police officer. But in any case, Nixon had many accomplishments behind his back and if it were not for Watergate, I think he would be considered a _much_ better President today.

Almost 50 years later, it's still the same - One side of the aisle refuses to applaud achievements just because of a "D" or an "R"... and even THEN healthcare was a problem...

@@benkleschinsky We do know. It doesn't work. In fact, making the drugs totally illegal makes people use them more, looking at Portugal as an example.
@benkleschinsky4 жыл бұрын
@@temperaterainforest5857 Nixon did not make any drugs illegal while he was President.
@temperaterainforest58574 жыл бұрын
True, but that isn't the point. The point is that the war on drugs reinforced the taboo against psychoactive substances. Nixon even called all forms of drug abuse "public enemy #1", Also, the war on drugs is shown to have targeted minorities, and has been demonstrated to have had a terrible effect on not only American society, but societies around the world. What do you mean "We'll never know"? We do know. It's been happening since Nixon and it's been awful the entire time. The war on drugs simply does not work.
@benkleschinsky4 жыл бұрын
In fact, during the Nixon and Carter years most states had decriminalized cannabis. Reagan stepping into office changed that.

this should be more appropriately called his “1974 State of the Union”, as it is the entire speech. Nixon did not bring up Watergate until AFTER he had given the SoTU - the Watergate remarks were off-the-cuff.

This guy was a politician in all the wrong terms. Just think what direction history and his political legacy would have taken if he had admitted to doing wrong regarding the Watergate break in, rather than lying and scheming to cover the break in up. Then again, his political history up to that point had been one of so much criminal behavior, it would have been difficult to imagine him as an honorable politician even if the Watergate break in had not destroyed his political career. Saying all this, Richard Nixon did accomplish some significant things as President. Nonetheless, nothing good he did outweighed the fact that his character was severely flawed.

I like how richard nixon talks about when he was with john f kennedy together in 1947 during the state of the union of that time, then he said,when looking 27 years forward in 2001, i hope you will call back to this moment and will realize that you were there, well i wonder if some pf those politicians just did that once 2001 arrived, Also for years i always tout (Unless i lived under a rock)that richard nixon was a rival from john f kennedy and lost the dialection to become the next president,but i guess once john f kennedy was killed, i suppose richard nickson took his place to be the next president? Right???

Nixon made the mistake of doing what attorneys tell their clients NOT TO DO! He is talking too much. I would not have even mentioned Watergate. He gave it fuel. He was wrong what he did, but he gave the special prosecutors office additional information, so to speak. He did not help himself.

I'm watching the former Speaker of The House Carle Albert and contrasting his behavior with that of our present Speaker of The House Nancy Pelosi. Speaker Albert had no fondness for Richard Nixon, but he remained respectful of the Constitutional process and conducted himself with dignity. Not so with our present House Speaker Pelosi as former PoTUS Donald Trump addressed the nation during his SoTU addresses. Let me be clear: I loathe Trump and the RepubliKKKlans on Capitol Hill; but I respect the Constitutional process and the Constitutional exercise of any and every President's State of The Union Address.
