I am so happy to see this beautiful and inspiring opera continues being staged around the world. This is particularly so at a time when China America relations are at a new low.

The creators' take on this is very strange--Pat may have "floated" through her heavily stage-managed tour of Peking and the Ming Tombs, but she was not a princess type at all as that dress suggests. That was the whole point of the red cloth coat she actually wore on the trip (it's a reference back to the "Checkers" speech--the Nixons always wanted to stress their humble origins). This seems like a total European fantasy of what Americans in general are like.
