Bravo! I've been using NixOS for a long time but it's great to get a better insight into the philosophy without having to read the thesis in its entirety.

The widespread Hydra changes after the xz rollback were because stdenv uses xz when building. Rolling back to the earlier binary format necessitated redoing those builds.
