The part about NixOS being so different and light uncharted territory... I think that might be part of why I love it so much. I love discovering solutions to problems rather than just looking them up or being told the solution.

I totally get it! I think this is the most exciting part for me too.

I also like this about nixOS but it feels like Nix is creating problems that are already solved and then getting you to solve them using a specific nixOS way.

Loving NixOS, I completely agree with the criticism and struggles. Sometimes figuring things out takes forever, and it's a little frustrating when something isn't in the repos. But being able to bring my entire config across multiple systems and compile everything onto an ISO makes using it at the high level you described an absolute dream. It's not for everyone, but it it's beautiful for who it's for!

The old saying that "Linux is free if your time is worthless" I found to be HIGHLY applicable to NixOS. Even the simplest step off the beaten path will take you down a rabbit hole that will take hours and hours to get out of. And you are just learning NixOS, the knowledge is not transferable to *anything* else.

Personally speaking i prefer installing using the console, mostly its just copy-paste the commands in the manual

nixos does have a unstable iso you can use. You can get the cachyos kernel on nix through a flake

How does Nix OS compare to Fedora and Debian?

Does X11 still give any advantages over Wayland in gaming?
@Gadtkaz7 ай бұрын
the advantage is nvidia mostly works on it.
@Ud4cznik7 ай бұрын
@@Gadtkaz Well recently I've discovered that for me (AMD GPU) wayland is better in therms of desktop experience (smoother window animations), while X11 gives me the best performance in games (low latency and smoother gameplay). Wayland gives a horrible feeling of a choppy gameplay most of the time.

Tried NixOS, nice idea but it required a HEAVY amount of script and config writing, with what I consider rather complicated syntax system for non-programmer. For example I had HUGE issues with Plasma theme support as NixOS would cripple the theme system of plasma. It was a nightmare in end and I gave up. (even after seeking help)
@jacquesfaba557 ай бұрын
See the problem was using Plasma
@user-yd9od2xu9q7 ай бұрын
I’d argue the syntax is as simple as possible for a non-programmer to learn (as a non-programmer who learned)
@A1RM4X7 ай бұрын
The issue for me was related to finding the right information for the right action. The syntax was not the problem, finding the right variable was the issue. The way the documentation is structured + the lack of documentation on certain subject make it impossible without some deep research on the net...
