I remember the first time I played Birthing Pod in Modern, the lack of interaction with my opponent felt so strange. You don't really care what their doing, just work the pod, you'll eventually win.

Yeah, a lot of decks just ignore what their opponent does. My homebrew matched up well against Pod decks back when it was legal. Had I had the money for a better mana base back then, Pod wouldn't have even been a bump in the road. That no interaction thing bit it in the ass against my turn 4 combo.

Shoutout to Gavony Township, the backup wincon. If your Pod is offline because of Stony Silence or Pithing Needle or whatever, then buffing your team of mana dorks and derpy creatures is a fine way to close out a game. Also, adding the +1/+1 counters to a persisted Kitchen Finks or Murderous Redcap was great as the counters cancel out. Also, how about that Golgari Rot Farm in Cuneo's list? I also seem to remember a different version of Angel Pod, popularized by LSV. This one had no Melira or Kiki-Jiki, only having Spike Feeder + Archangel of Thune as a combo, but it usually just sought to grind out value with Pod and Restoration Angel. The deck basically died when SIege Rhino was printed, as chaining Siege Rhinos two or three turns in a row was just better and something that most decks couldn't beat.

Always appreciate these deck history videos Currently the most relevant creature toolbox decks generally run Eladamri's Call, a pretty insane tutor at instant speed. They haven't been consistently relevant but they have put up some results in Modern Challenges every now and then, mostly in a Bant shell.

It’s funny I was thinking the power level of pod would be contextualized in how it’s “colorless” but it doesn’t seem relevant across its competitive history since all the best pod decks have green in them (if I’m not mistaken). I suppose green just has some of the strongest etb creatures and ramp for the pod

Pod made me start playing serious and drop Yu-Gi-Oh. I think that's because it always felt like a ygo deck IMHO. It turns your deck into a toolbox to deal with problems which rocked in my eyes

Why do you think birthing pod hasn't seen much success in other formats? I guess I would expect all the things that made it good in modern would make it good in legacy or vintage, too.

Its too slow for those formats. People have tried. Pod needs several turns to really do its thing, and you don't have that.

It's not just that it's too slow, it's that other decks that do Pod things also exist and do what it does better. Nic Fit is a perennial rogue deck and meme in Legacy, and it essentially does the old "drop game ending bombs" on the opponent, but with significantly more interaction and a lot more consistency. That said, Pod Affinity used to be a thing if memory serves.

Get cheat codes n a high CMC cost creature then Neoform into a creature that returns a sorcery to your hand. There's a creature that does that for every CMC 3+. Also can evoke a creature and use undying etc to keep it in play

Wotc saw how much of a shitshow their original creature ladder deck was, Rebels (mercadian masques) and thought that it couldn’t go wrong if they just had 1 card (that’s essentially colorless and cheap no matter what anyone tells you about phyrexian mana. Now they’ve just settled for worse variants of pod. Vannifar, pyre of heros, Oswald and letting modern players seethe over the continual placement on the Ban list. It’s basically mtg twitter’s most requested modern unban after splinter twin which is mind blowing to me.

It is legal, but no one plays it. It is too slow for the format.

It's too slow for legacy. A 4 drop in legacy should win you the game in some way. Survival of the fittest which is better pod in every way is banned in legacy AFAIK
