Finlays probably winning this match as a means to try and legitimise him as a major star in New Japan. Hes in a similar position as what Jay White originally was when they first pushed him - noone took him seriously, White with consistency was able to prove everyone wrong and became a solid main eventer and stable leader - Finlays facing that same test now.

Jay White debut new japan already set him up to become the next big thing. First Wrestlekingdom debut vs Hiroshi Takahashi is huge. Japan people already view him as next big thing already. People views Finlay as jobber all these years. That a different. Jay white debut, beat Omega, beat Okada, memorable G1 win after win. Not take Jay White serious doesnt mean people view Jay as jobber. People never do that. Finlay is jobber, it has been that way for years, noone take him serious, he wins title doesnt mean anything, people still vuew him jobber

@@nguyenmimi7379 that's true to some degree, they're taking different approaches between White and Finlay for sure. Finlay is being pushed up internally after originally being a low midcard/jobber level guy - that takes time and patience to get a guy to a higher level - maybe the fans will eventually accept him seriously or they won't, its sink or swim for him. White was pushed differently- he went on excursion to ROH after being a young boy - when he returned New Japan had already decided he was gonna be a top guy, so they pushed him immediately. Let's not forget though that the first couple of years for White were rough - he got a lot of backlash in the early months for the way he was pushed, many thought he just wasn't ready and the majority of his matches were simply decent at a time when almost all their matches in the main event scene were of an excellent quality - guys like Tanahshi, Okada and Omega were carrying White through matches, he relied a lot on shenanigans to fill his matches initially and it became known that when you wrestled White you were gonna get a 'White standard match'. He stood out as a weak link initially in New Japan in the main event scene. Many hated that he was given a Win over Tanahashi at WK and many thought he wasn't ready to be World Champ when they put the belt on him. Luckily though, he learnt and improved quickly - but again it was sink or swim for him and since then White has legit become a top tier guy. An example of it not working out is Evil. He was pushed as the main guy band given the titles when many said he wasn't ready and it didn't work out, he sunk as a main eventer - every now and again they pop him in the main event as someone fkr the champ to beat - but he's not been pushed seriously as a main eventer ever since. Point being - Finlays at that point now. Either this run goes well for him or he won't see the main event scene in his New Japan tenure.
