I've always considered the Open Bible from Thomas Nelson to be among the best study bibles available. And while there is no question that the quality of this newest version stands head and shoulders over previous editions in terms of binding, paper, maps, red ink, etc., I still prefer the format of my older Open Bible that has the references at the end of each verse, even though the glued pages are starting to fall out! (sigh)

Guy Montag I completely agree with you! I love having references, word meanings, prophetic stars etc at the end of the verse cause they caught my attention and I’d go check them out but the center column in this one is harder to see and I really miss that they didn’t leave them after the verses. Guy, thanks for this feedback about the references--really valuable! As publisher for Thomas Nelson Bibles, I'm the one who made the call to go with our complete set of center-column references. My hope was that we'd add a lot of value by having more than 72,000 cross references, compared with just a few thousand in the end-of-verse set. And it truly does make The Open Bible the best reference Bible available anywhere! That being said, I can see that there are some real advantages to having a smaller set of easy-to-read, conveniently-placed references. In fact...we're planning to bring a few end-of-verse reference Bibles in the near future (in Comfort Print, of course), thanks to helpful feedback like this. Daniel Marrs that would be awesome to see a large print! All of my other Open Bibles that I use I always check the references after the verses but with this one I haven’t used the references in it cause I have to search them out, same with the word meanings and prophetic stars being in the center column. I’m just used to the older style layout and the center column print is a bit small for my eyes otherwise I would use them more but it’s harder to see for me with having macular degeneration. But it really has been the thing most people have mentioned most is the font sizes in the text and center column. A large print edition would get rid of the issue completely cause the center column would be more readable. I absolutely love this Bible and the paper and print quality is fantastic! The more I use it the more I like it. I use one of my Open Bibles on a daily basis and I tend to always have an older edition next to this one and I compare things all the time...it really is an amazing Bible and I can see why you’d want to have the full reference suite vs a few thousand. I doubt people would mind the Bible being larger like the full size Study Bibles cause there would be room for a larger font and possibly a wider margin but anything Thomas Nelson has put out lately has been so impressive and it is going to keep the other publishers on their toes to try to keep up. What you and the folks there are doing is wonderful! I want to thank you for taking the time to watch my review and to comment. That says a lot about Thomas Nelson as a whole because everyone there that I have had any contact with have been amazing to deal with and it shows that you’re taking the time to see what the Bible consumers are asking for and you’re providing the products and that alone puts Thomas Nelson/Harper Collins at the top. I have an original issue in leather done in 1983. I have avoided using it lately because of it’s age. I’m glad that they reissued it with the comfort print. I purchased another one with comfort print and brown leather like.

Thank you so much for what you do. I’m still pretty young in my walk with God & can’t seam to find a church where I feel comfortable, or even a place just to fellowship once in a while. so I look towards the internet for help. Sense I’ve found your channel, you’ve helped me to understand the basic workings of all bibles & what to look for in a quality Bible. But this review was like no other. I had no idea how much I was missing out on until now. I have been using my wife’s 20 year old open bible (along with many other types for cross referencing) for over 2 years now but I was only using about half of what it has to offer because I just couldn’t grasp how it worked. Even After watching several videos on this bible it still just sail over my head. Then after subscribing to your channel a few days ago this video came up. WOW!! I felt like a knucklehead after your review because it became obvious how to use this study tool. It was kinda like Paul having the scales lifted from his eyes. I can now see how easy it is to use the open bible.But I do agree that the red in the newer version is much nicer. The old red is kind of washed out. And the cross referencing after each sentence in the old one is great also, cu’z I would at least glance at it after every period. I don’t do that with the center column type. & the new version does need the “how to use”section. Even though I wasn’t able to grasp everything, it did help enough to make it my main go-to bible. Again thank you very much. p.s. Do you have a “how to” section in your video library? I’d love to know how to use other study Bibles & you seam to be a natural teacher.

It’s an awesome Bible! I do really miss some of the features of the old layout where things were after the verse cause it was so quick to be able to see it. The center column on this one is a little small for my eyes so I find it harder to use cause of that. But this new one does have a lot more info in it cause there’s a lot more references in it... I will have to do some how to type videos for some of these study Bibles cause some of them can be hard to figure out and if people find them to be too overwhelming they won’t use their Bible and that defeats the purpose. One of the ones that was harder to figure out was the Companion Bible...but I’ll have to add that to my videos list and do some videos on that, that is a great idea! I would say that is a great trade especially if you weren’t using the Spurgeon one. The Open Bible is absolutely awesome and is loaded with so many great study aids. You could study it all your life and still not hit every topic in it. It is a great Bible! And the goatskin on the Spurgeon is a garment grade goatskin so it’s very different from your typical goatskin Bibles. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. Faithful Planner Girl I saw your review on that one. I think I commented on it if I remember correctly...yeah that is a neat old Bible. The bonded leather over time just doesn’t hold up as well. I have this same Bible, given to me by my wife for our first Christmas as a married couple in 1998. It’s finally falling apart, and I was so saddened to learn the New Open Bible is out of print, as I’d hoped to replace it with a leather-bound NASB version. The current Open Bible is nice and the reference system simply can’t be touched by anything else, but I can’t make myself use the center-column references.

pianist4him52 I don’t have an NKJV one but I do have a CSB and a KJV key word study Bible. I have a review of the CSB one and it is a very neat Bible. The NKJV is my preferred translation but in that video I show all the features of the Bible and it would be an awesome one in the NKJV. They’re well made and have sewn bindings too, some sites will say they’re glued but I confirmed with the publisher that all they do is sewn bindings. CBD usually has the best price on them.

I love this review. I was using this Bible last night. I can’t read it for a long period of time because the print is a little too small. There is lots of great information to be found in it though. Although you showing the old open Bible that you have really makes me want to have that one. I find it easier to use the older layout cause I don’t have to go searching for the info, it is just right there waiting for me at the end of the verse which I really like. It would be worth finding an older one in good condition.

Excellent review as always. Wonderful job and an excellent Bible. How's the leather soft edition? I want to have this Bible so much but I can't afford the genuine leather, it's just too expensive for me. I'm from Jamaica and 1 US dollar is 140 JA, so whatever the cost add about $30 more for shipping to Jamaica. Anyways as this is my favourite translation of the Bible and with it looking so awesome, even if it takes me the better part of a year, I'll have to get one. I've never owned a Open Bible before, in fact I've never seen it before in Jamaica. We don't get these quality bibles here, you guys in the United States are really lucky, praise God for that though, I'm a bit jealous, I have to read these bible online.

I’d check Christianbook and put one in the cart and then scroll down to the bottom of the page on the left side and click on shipping and returns and then shipping rates and then international shipping and it will tell you how much it would be for them to ship what is in the cart. They have the best prices. We’re very lucky here in the USA to have Bibles so readily available to us. People often forget how hard it is for those of you outside the USA. Would this be a good bible for someone who has never been to church or read bible? Should I look for study bible or just a regular. So many options and I dont know where to start

I would recommend a good full color study Bible cause it will be more engaging to have all of the visuals in it and it can really help with being able to remember things cause you can associate them with an image. Plus having study notes really helps as well. Both Thomas Nelson and Holman offer full color study Bibles in the NKJV. I’ve reviewed the KJV editions of both so if you looked at those videos the contents will be about the same but just the different translation. The NKJV is my favorite translation. Crossway also makes a great ESV study Bible as well and I’ve reviewed that one too and it’s a great Bible. But I think a full color study Bible would be more engaging than this one or a Thompson chain. Although the open Bible and Thompson chain are both great they can be overwhelming to someone who is new to the Bible whereas the full color ones are less intimidating and will really give you lots of insightful information and seeing the actual places and artifacts is awesome too and the study notes are great and they have cross references and a concordance too so they have everything you’d need. A few shared your opinion that the notes and explanations are very helpful while others say they find the notes to be to influenced by the authors. Someone suggested that I go to book store and read a few and see which one really speaks to me. I did find a Christian bookstore that is along my commute to work I am going to stop by and check out. I do believe I am going to go with NKJV, was also recommended the strong's concordance along with it. One thing I have found reaching out to people for advice is that believers are very friendly kind and eager to help.

Christianbook.com ships to Israel, if you go to their website and add this Bible to the cart and then scroll down on the lower left side of the screen to "shipping and handling rates" and click on it and then scroll down to "international" and it will bring up a drop down box to choose your country and it will show how much it costs to ship what it is in the cart to your country. When I just put in this Bible and chose Israel is shows shipping is $28.04 and the Bible itself is $69.99 for the genuine leather and they have hardcover editions for $11.99 and imitation leather ones for as low as $24.99. PK McNett it is on the small side for sure, I can read the Biblical text just fine but the center column is hard on my eyes depending on the day.
