Excellent video thanks Scott. I rode behind 611 from Chicago englewood to Fort Wayne & back with my grand-son . In those days u could hang out in the vestibule. I’ve been around steamers all my life, been to Chicago behind th nyc NIagra going to college. At 87 years I’ve seen a lot of steam.

I remember my first time riding this train. It was my first time ever riding a train, let alone a steamer. Ive been fascinated and have slowly been working on my own custom Lego model and ive sunk hundreds of hours into learning about steam engines

Great video and sound. NKP 765 is the first major steam engine I ever saw in action, back in 1982. In the following years, I also saw N&W 1218 and N&W 611, in action. NKP 765 is still my favorite one. She looks mean, but graceful. I love the sounds, especially that whistle. Thumbs up on this video!

There's is nothing like the sound of a steamer especially their whistles they sound so much better than a diesel engine does. Sends shivers down your spine just even to hear them I really need to see more of these old trains back on the tracks running again.

Well here's the twist. These beasts aren't really running in heritage railroads. Like NW 611. She's owned by Norfolk Southern,I believe. And even UP 844 is owned by it's own railway still.

I know it’s a really late response, but one thing to consider when having an engine from abroad visiting another country is the height and width of the engine. Most trains here in the US hang over the edge of the tracks greatly and most are about 16 ft tall. I see most UK engines are mostly short for the bridges and tunnels and skinny to almost be flush with the station platforms. I’d love to see a US engine over in England too but it would need a very specific route.

The big Berkshire, showing some serious pulling power - the usual 18 coaches PLUS 9 road freights (I don't count the tender and water car). I hope FWHRS finds a railway willing to run excursions soon - this old girl, like N&W 611, Southern 4501 & 630, UP 4014 & 844, and SP 4449, needs to be able to operate again.

Indeed. At what point was it decided that a large, powerful steam locomotive was no longer able to haul trains? It is nanny-state madness, and should be stopped.
@bensommer4529
@bensommer4529 9 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Steam is so powerful and railroad used steam locomotives all the time until diesel came! I also heard a reason that they have those diesel units behind the steam locomotive is because the railroads are afraid something will go wrong and they don't want a huge backup on their mainline.

Excursion service. Millions love steam engines still and many groups, like the one running the 765, run entirely on volunteers and donations. They still prove reliable 150 years. The Big Boy 4014, the largest operating steam engine, decided to push a stalled diesel engine with 100s of tons of weight plus its other 100 tons of passengers. They are still some of the strongest equipment ever!

The 765 had to do very long ferry moves between excursions when it ran for NS’s 21st Century Steam Program. Especially in 2012, 2013, and 2015. That’s why the gons of coal. Unfortunately NS ended the short lived program and isn’t even going to sponsor 611 excursions anymore starting this year, they auctioned off five of the red excursion coaches that were bought for the program. 611 might be able to operate excursions with Amtrak on NS.
