Being on the cover of Spin doesn't qualify you as mainstream. It's especially ludicrous to compare them to the Jonas brothers, who are all over the media and awards shows and whatnot. MGMT are ... well, it's nice to have unconventional-ness, even in the alternative scene, and that's what they are. Fun. Don't call them mainstream though, because I doubt electric eels and shooting heroin will ever be that.
