Nnamdi Kanu Erupts In Court After Justice Nyako Adjourned His Trial Indefinitely

Agitating for Biafra is my right - Nnamdi Kanu
After more than four years in detention, Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), remains defiant about his calls for the independence of Biafra.
Speaking to reporters in a courtroom at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, Mr Kanu reaffirmed his commitment to the cause, citing his legal right to seek a sovereign Biafra nation. “That is why I do what I do; I agitate for Biafra, I agitate for Biafra… by my right to agitate, my right,” he said, looking into journalists’ cameras.
Agitations for the secession of Nigeria’s then Eastern region - today’s five states of the South-east - as an independent Biafra nation prompted Nigeria’s Civil War in the late 1960s.
Present day agitators led by Mr Kanu have extended the boundaries to include some parts of the neighbouring states bordering the region.

Obviously, this is not a matter for the court system. Previous court rulings ordered his release from detention, but they were never obeyed. I don’t believe any future court order in his favor will be followed by the government or the security agencies holding him. He has offended those detaining him, and only an out-of-court dialogue and agreement can secure his release. He also appears unwell and deteriorated. I hope nothing happens to him, as it could trigger serious unrest and insecurity in the Southeast, further harming the region’s economy. Yet, no one in the government or security agencies detaining him would be held accountable.
