It has always been my thought, that the Talyllyn Railway treats their engines with the utmost respect purely for the fact that they keep them running. One could have been tempted to retire No 1 and 2 to preserve the original parts in the 50s, but it is far more fitting to preserve in them in running condition. These engines were built to be useful and parts would have to be replaced over time on any working railway. I’d much rather have the chance to one day ride behind No 1 and 2 than see them stuffed and mounted in ‘original condition.’ Mine you comments get lost in KZbin’s algorithm, but I hope the Talyllyn Railway staff know that their efforts to keeps these old engines running are highly appreciated.

so Talyllyn is going to be fitted with new cylinders during this overhaul or are they going be fitting new cylinder linings? its great that they are going to make Talyllyn a better runner for the footplate crews

So the rods on either side are 90 degrees out of phase. I thought that you'd want them to be 180 degrees out of phase due to the sinusoidal power curve from the pistons, in order for the average power to be constant. Or is there something I'm not seeing? (Probably that if I'm completely honest)
@ukuleletyke Жыл бұрын
That would perhaps be the case if each cylinder were single-acting, i.e. only delivering one power impulse per cylinder per axle revolution. Most steam locos (including this one) are double acting, with power being applied alternately to both front and back sides of the piston, giving two impulses per cylinder per revolution. These impulses are by nature 180 degrees out of phase, and with two such cylinders we end up with four power impulses per revolution- hence the 90 degree phase shift.

Plymouth was a locally built engine but the line had received Fletcher Jennings locos prior so can be considered an 'inspired' A Class.

I say, the Talyllyn railway should extend more upward into the mountains, the more scenic views, the more people will come, and the more people will come, you need another engine and a few more coaches. Maybe you can build your own locomotive or maybe borrow the Blue Prints for another locomotive and than build that locomotive for your railway. The higher up into the mountains, the more opportunity’s to bring in more tourists and also on the way up to the mountains, someone will be speaking on a microphone and talk about the history of the Talyllyn railway and also talk about the history of the locomotive’s working on the Talyllyn.
