I have never made a quilt so this may be a very newbie question but I am going to ask. Why do you use polyester batting rather than cotton? Is it personal preference or is there a functional reason?
@TheSewingRoomChannel
@TheSewingRoomChannel 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mossy. Great question. I use both. I decided to use the polyester batting because I wanted a fluffy look, and it doesn't need as many quilting stitches - stitch in the ditch works real with polyester batting. Cotton batting looks and holds up better with more quilting stitches. Stitching in the ditch is not enough. I hope I answered your question. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing.

Love your tutorial and I am excited to take it on! I am newbie and have a couple of questions... Is there any reason why I couldn't/shouldn't make this quilt with flannel? I've recently made an easy quilt where I stitched in the ditch and had the problem of the inside/batting bunching up causing a pucker at the edge my quilt ..does the walker foot help avoid this problem? Thank you
@TheSewingRoomChannel
@TheSewingRoomChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Natasha. Yes you can use flannel, and yes the walking foot will help to prevent the fabric from stretching and puckering. Stay safe, and thanks for watching.

Do you wash your fabric before you sew it?
@TheSewingRoomChannel
@TheSewingRoomChannel 4 ай бұрын
Hi Helen. Yes. If the fabric is cotton, wash/dry it before cutting into the fabric. Do a zigzag stitch on the raw edges of the fabric then wash/dry it. Thanks for watching💗 and happy sewing😍

What about that batting getting caught up in your teeth under the machine? I prefer cotton batting and it pulls apart so easy.
@TheSewingRoomChannel
@TheSewingRoomChannel 8 ай бұрын
Hi Mrlmog. I have not had that problem in the past. But here is a suggestion: Place another layer of plain quilting fabric down first, then place the batting on top, and last place the quilt top over the batting. This will prevent the batting from getting caught on the teeth. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching💗 and happy sewing😍

Can you do the ‘stitch in the ditch’ without a walking presser foot?
@TheSewingRoomChannel
@TheSewingRoomChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Helen. Yes you can, but without a walking foot the fabric will stretch out of place and you can get pin tucks in the fabric. You can purchase a walking foot from amazon.com, or go to a sewing machine dealer store to purchase one. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I cut 8 of fabric a 4 of b and 4 of c that makes 16 not 20. 1/4 of a yard is not enough for 8.5 inch squares
@TheSewingRoomChannel
@TheSewingRoomChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Barbara. 1/4 yard is 9" wide. Maybe the fabric store made an error in cutting your fabric. The quilt in the video has 4 squares in each row, and there are 4 row. So you only need 16 squares. You can make the quilt larger if you like. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍
