I also have a no-build minivan conversion that suits my needs just fine. No, not everybody needs to spend months, hard work, and money into making their van livable and comfortable for camping and the van life. Often necessity and lack of money is the mother of simplicity.

This is a fabulous van build video, one of my very favorites, for two reasons. The first reason is that it was completely to the point with no extraneous blather. The video is 7 minutes and 47 seconds long, and you didn't waste a single one. These 25 minute "build" vids with long housekeeping intros and extensive scenery and philosophy of vanlife and minimalism drive me to distraction. I actually chose your vid because of the 7:47 in the lower left-hand corner! The second reason is the build itself. Good use of the available space, comfy and cozy, well-organized efficient tiny home, with plenty of attention paid to dog comfort! ;-) Good job and thank you so much for posting and all those great links!

My 2020 Dodge Promaster Hi top van is also a 'no build' build. The van did have premise inside ribs that shelving attaches to and you get from American Van in NJ. I bought only one large bookcase style unit and my super handy son installed it. I bought a bed frame put it on risers and my own twin mattress on that. Above I have a cargo net that holds all linens and towels. I hide that with a valence. It makes for snug and cozy sleeping. As for kitchen, I bought a rectangular stainless steel table. My 2burner is on top of that. I use big bottles of water with pump. And 2 Rtic coolers because living in it fulltime. I need 2. And a portable potty. Lots of scatter rugs on floor so I can kneel or sit pain free. Noow after a year. I want to change things. Twin bed to a cot, add another cargo net. Change to flat water storage and get my passenger seat removed. I am totally off grid. Love my 2 jackeries. And I want a mini wood stove for heat. Maybe we will run into each other one day. I would enjoy that

Hey! Looks great! I have a 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan and I also did a no-build build. I put the seats in the floor and put a tarp down to protect the carpet. I also have a Coleman cot and a 5 gallon bucket. I thought I needed so much stuff, but I've been paring down to just the basics. I want it to look "invisible" to people on the street, so I just use a sunshade in the front and black reflectix in the rear window. I like being able to look out if I hear something. I feel safe in my minivan, and it's very roomy. I like your cot in the center with a table on the side as a desk. Makes a lot of sense. I, too, have a chihuahua as my companion! Thanks for sharing your ideas. Hope you enjoy your adventures!

I absolutely love the idea of a no-build camper van! I have a little experience with the type of air conditioning unit you have, it's also known as a swamp cooler. It's a simple idea, you fill its reservoir with water and it only takes a small electric current to run its fan that blows on water that is cycled to pass in front of it, which cools that air up to 20°, which is as much as any standard air conditioner can do! But it only does it for a few feet away from it. Make sure you get one with a big enough water reservoir for the length of sleep you're going to need AC for! I bought a small one that looks like the one you have and its 2 cup ? water capacity would only last a couple of hours maximum. A friend gave me a different one that holds about a gallon, and that lasts all night long. Of course it's much bigger, which is a space trade-off, but might really be worth it in order to get a good night's rest on a summer night in Florida, which is kind of a worst case test. A swamp cooler does not need to be vented, which is a Huge advantage over the standard air conditioner. My little swamp cooler operates off a USB port, the bigger one operates on standard AC. If you could provide continuous water to the little unit from a bladder located elsewhere, it would be perfect. Maybe raise it high enough for gravity feed. Would be fun to invent 😁

What a smart and lovely build! The tips you gave us are very useful - gel pad, collapsible dog bowl... Thank you so much for sharing all the links to these goodies! Useful to have tried and tested products. I'll leave some of my own tips below for you and others. Chihuahua's are great guard dogs and love the heat. Excellent choice for solo travel. They don't mind it being hot, and will alert you if stranger approaches. Quite fierce too and not stranger friendly but loyal friends to owner. Thanks for an excellent tour and great audio and visuals! I use silicone oven pads - anything with this silicone textured surface is a quick and easy way to prevent things from sliding around on a desk or countertop during travel. The thicker silicone waffle type square pot holders were cheap at Walmart and great for bigger heavier items. Stops all sliding unless its a very tall item. Curtains - I use fabric.com for most of my needs. Their website is awesome. If you like color, look for the all cotton high quality designs of Kaffe Fasset, an American designer. 400 Thread Count silky cotton with prints that are very high quality and don't fade easily at less than $10/ yd. Back up your curtains with Roclon Blackout rubber cloth - easily sews on and blocks all light 60" width at $2 per yard! Machine washable. IKEA sells curtain tracks that mount on ceiling or wall and can be cut to size or joined to make bigger. Curtains glide easily on them. You will need Shirring Tape and large non poky Drapery Hooks from IKEA as well. You might want to get a Berkey Water Filter system in stainless steel. The Berkey Travel size is good. Filters out everything bad. Has a tap too, so easy to pour out. Keeps you safe. Why not a magnetic curtain around the legs of your Lack table? Will keep the dust out of your towels and such. Consider packing them in a travel sleeve to keep them from dust. Dust is your greatest enemy in a van. Dewalt makes a small 12V wet dry vacuum run by a battery. Great for van life, and you can scrub your cloth seats or floors anytime with laundry detergent and hot water and vacuum it dry with this little vacuum. Very useful for detailing a car interior as well.

These would be a good solution to the homeless problem. Park a bunch of these in a deserted parking lot. Build a few restrooms and showers like they have at state parks. Then a building that cooks food. Detroit can make these van by the millions. Build these homeless parks in the warmer parts of the country like in Florida or the southwest.

I believe that tiny houses would be an answer, or at least a start. More and more people have become homeless in recent years.

Thank you. I'm 48 and Diabetic I have been dreaming about traveling for so long! Need 5 more years to retire with the minimum payout from my pension. I pray i make it, this is inspirational.

Why would you pray you make it? You’re 48 years old you’re not on your death bed. Even with diabetes you’re not doomed or something. I’m sure you will make it just fine and have great travels

@@turkey4957 I'm allergic to the two medicines I can afford and I can only collect the minimum pension after 5 more years. In my line of work I cannot collect social security. I also have injuries throughout my body because of my line of work but I refuse to go on disability! All diabetics have different symptoms. If I don't experience anymore determination then yes I will love to hold on to my pipedream and do some van travels. But I'm also realistic about my health limitations and horrible determination I've experienced in the last 3 years. Maybe you ment well with your message but not everyone can just get up and go it's not that simple. Was on a plane 2 weeks ago for a small furlough and my symptoms made the plane ride and the trip into one of my worst experiences in a long time! It was bad almost topping the backpain/contractions from childbirth! Honestly should have stayed home. But I definitely should give thanks to all you vloggers that share travels because that's how some of us with limited mobility get to travel by living vicariously through you all.

I have a 2004 Honda Odyssey van where I've used a no-build camper conversion. Mine centers around using 3 of those heavy duty black storage containers with the yellow tops as a base for my bed so I can use them for storage. They are about the width of a cot mattress, but I use a 2" full sized memory foam pad that I just fold in half. I do have reflectix cut out for the windows, but blackout curtains have been a real challenge due to the curves in the roof as well as a roof liner that nothing seems to want to stick to well enough to stay put. So I've ended up using bungee cords and just putting up the curtains when I need them with clothes pins. I recently took the things out for winter and it did not take long at all.

Have u thought of applying black material to the reflectix ? Ive seen others do that to black out their windows from seeing in. I plan to do the same.

@@stephaniesturgeon5591 You mean the black felt? I've seen that done but for me between the relectix and the black out curtains no light leaks from inside my van.

Steve C. I mean whatever u wanna use. Ive seen black material or blackout curtains used too. But u have to make sure u push it against the window real good. Ive even seen where they spray painted their windows black. Minivans have so much windows that its hard to keep warm with not much wall space to insulate too.
