Great video! After your last ridgeline video I made one like that. Then made another like this, the wsy I've been doing for years. I now have both. I like the fancy one for longer term and unhurried setups, but for quick 'emergency' setups this is so much simpler.

Keeping your ridgeline & your toggles connected to the tarp or rolled inside during transport will help ensure you always have them ready to deploy. Half inch pvc tubing cut into small sections with a hole for a small lanyard loop will keep toggles together with a light duty caribeaner. Thanks Corporal. OAF.

Another benefit of using toggles is that the pressure exerted on grommets is very little. Those cheap poly tarps always lose their grommets when you tie THRU the grommet, rather than spread the stress to both sides using a toggle that spans the hole.

@user-ex5yk4xj4c
@user-ex5yk4xj4c 28 күн бұрын
@@shauncarr1957 Well thats kind of the whole point sir. Cpl's previous ridgeline system was already designed to be as simple and reliable as possible. When set up the way he showed, most of the knot tying was already done for you and all you had to remember was the Marlin Spike hitch for securing to the tree and then the trucker hitch for tensioning, both of which are still on this iteration of the system sir. Perhaps in your case the laziness comment does not apply, but sir I camp maybe 2 times a year where I use this system. Beyond those 2 times a year I dont practice them or think about them and I remember how to do it every time it comes out of my shelter system bag. It doesnt get any simpler than the original system he showed, without sacrificing a bit of reliability. Ill admit that the system he shows in this video though, lends itself to faster and easier teardown which would be important in an emergency. But lets be real here, Cpl teaches us these skills as part of a simplified SERE course. Knots are a miniscule and insignificant responsibility compared to policing your gear, light and noise discipline, etc. All of these little things he teaches add up to the big skills that protect your life and the lives of those in your stewardship. Its all important, no corner should be cut. Making excuses to avoid the discipline to memorize the smaller techniques will culminate in all of the important things being wrong when you are counting on them and it's too late to fix it.

Firefighter hear. We learned multiple knots in fire school. I quickly learned that a figure 8 knot will do just about anything you want. Loop in the end. Loop around an object. Loop in the middle. Tie two ropes together. Still use other knots for technical rescue. But the figure 8 is a great general use knot. Also easy to tie in the dark and with gloves on.

Thx to corporal’s vids and tutorials i’m using ropes much more efficiently. I also watch other people’s vids about effective application of knots. And most of them are super simple and easy to use. For summer i only need hammock, 10m rope with few Prusik loops on it, sleeping bag - and my lazy camp is ready:). Occasional stakes or extra stands are made from sticks and branches of fallen trees.

Knots cost nothing, and weigh less. Get a three or four foot piece of cord, and learn a few. A Bowline, a Clove hitch, an Alpine butterfly, an overhand and a square knot will get you started. There are specialty knots for climbing, sailing, sewing, and fishing, and some other uses if you need them, but these basics will take you a long way. These are easily combined to make things like the Truckers hitch, the Arbor knot, and the famous Prussik, but just learn the basic component knots first. There are tons of how-to videos on here, and you can just practice while you are watching TV, on the phone, or hangin' out. These can save your life. Don't practice till you can do them, practice until you can't do them wrong; blindfolded, in the dark, when it's raining or snowing and so cold your fingers are numb. As Sean said, it's muscle memory. My fingers know how, even when my brain is in shut down mode. Humans have thumbs for a reason. Along with using fire, using cordage and knots is one of the things that separate us from the apes. Shelter first then fire, and knots are usually a big part of shelter. Hint: Most knots, if properly tied in the first place, should be just as easy to untie.
