(apologies if someone already said this) The title is a reference to a poem called "Sailing to Byzantium" by William Butler Yeats. The first line is "That is no country for old men." The poem is kind of a meditation on the pain of growing old, so it fits with this movie really well. One of the big lines is "Consume my heart away; sick with desire / and fastened to a dying animal..." Heartwrenching poem, but it's short and available online and very good, if anyone's interested.

NCFOM is all about sailing. Sailing away from something, and sailing towards something, as we all do. The denial of death and the attempt at coming to terms with the idea of our own mortality. In the poem there’s a tie in to The Aeneid which is originally a commissioned work in order to provide a foundation myth to justify it’s Empire and Rome’s own Manifest Destiny, tying it all the way back to Homer’s Troy. The poem refers to a specific part of the Aeneid, the part where Aeneas is visiting his father’s shadow in the Underworld. This seemingly ties into the end scene of the movie with Bell’s dream of fire in a horn quite nicely. Cervantes is also referred to at the start of the movie during Bell’s narration. Three windmills are shown. Don Quixote is not the best example in literature of an old man gracefully coming to terms with his own mortality. Bell who opens and closes the film is the main character. NCFOM is like The Shining, there’s a rabbit hole to go down option everywhere you look.

Moss isn’t really the main character. The Sheriff is. He’s the narrator. I think that’s why the Cohens felt they could kill Moss off screen. It’s a very uniquely put together story. Classic stuff.

Having Moss be killed, unceremonsiously and even off camera is actually brilliant. It's the precise opposite of plot armor that's so prevalent in movies and tv shows these days, and it anchors the movie firmly in real life. In real life there are no main characters, just characters. These can be lucky ones, or unlucky ones, and there is no plot armor.
@Epistolary8

This film is dark, and shocking for the way that the antagonist becomes a survivor, yet the protagonist is just dead! But this production also reveals how bizarrely violent that the living environment can actually be! In my view, this flick is a masterpiece!
@neil2444
@neil2444 Жыл бұрын
It depicts a villain if a villain were thrown into real life, and not a movie, meaning the villain can get what he wants more often than not, and the protagonist can be immoral and die. It's not satisfying in the sense that you feel justice should be served, but it's a reminder that life doesn't work to satisfy our sense of justice. The car crash in the end is symbolic of the fact that not even the villain is immune to the chaos of life.

This movie is basically a western, but on the New West instead of the Old West. The Old West movies portray a good guy who beats the bad guy, but the New West is different: crime has become so violent and organized that the good guy is killed way before the movie ends, the bad guy escapes, and the old police officer just can't wait to be retired, because he understands everything that is going on but he knows that he can't do anything about this.

One of my favourite scene in this film is when Tommy Lee Jones tells the wife about the guy who injured himself killing a cow (one of the most defenseless creatures) to where he couldn't lift his arm above his head. After Anton kills the wife (arguably the most defenseless person in the film), he gets injured by no fault of his own, where he can't lift his own arm above his head. Beautiful portray of moral chaos even to those who strictly live by moral order. My two cents 🍺

Seeing this movie at the theater was amazing. I was absolutely glued to the screen and the audience was dead silent. The epic cinematography was breathtaking, as were intense scenes like the shootout. The movie defied expectations at every turn and I left thinking "holy shit, it's been ages since I watched a movie that was unlike anything I've ever seen before". I consider it to be a legitimate all-time masterpiece of cinema.

One thing that always bugged me is how easily the Woody Harrelson character gets ambushed. He's hired to deal with Chigurh because he's supposed to be an expert himself. In the book they let you know that he was a Green Beret officer who'd fought in the jungles of Vietnam. But then he goes sauntering up those steps and lets Chigurh just walk up behind him. It seems very, very sloppy. Still a great movie and I love when Mary cracks herself up.

Woody in the film is a retired army Colonel as is mention by the “kids with bones in their noses and green hair” Sheriff over coffee with Bell. Woody’s a free agent working for the CIA. He ribs the Company boss about validating his parking and a missing floor. Look into the movie Air America. The CIA’s in the drug business in 1980, when the film takes place. Woody’s character was very confident and cocky. In the hospital he let’s Moss knows Chigurh is going to Odessa. Woody doesn’t think Chigurh is still in the general area. As a movie star no one is expecting Woody to be a minor player so his quick introduction and death is more shocking. Now that I think about it, all the deaths in this movie are shocking as they are presented to us on screen.

Psychologists have said that Anton Chigurh is a very accurate portrayal of a sociopath. His view of life is strange. He sees himself as carrying out fate, which relieves him of responsibility for all his murders. But, as we see at the end, even he is subject to random chance. Llewelyn Moss is smart but not wise. He knows how to solve problems that are right in front of him, but he doesn't have enough foresight to stay out of trouble. A tip: if you come across a drug deal with a bunch of dead people lying around, get the hell out of there and then call the police. One thing that makes this movie work is an absence of non-diegetic sound. That is, all the sound in the film is in the environment of the story, audible to the characters in the story. There's no soundtrack. This means there's a lot of silence, which as you noted, creates tension. Kelly Macdonald, who played Carla Jean, is Scottish and speaks with a heavy Scottish accent. Her Texas accent in this movie is impeccable. When I first saw the movie I had no idea she's not from the American south. Coen Brothers movies have memorable minor characters, like the manager at the trailer park. She had only about a minute of screen time, but she adds to the atmosphere of the film. Thanks for this reaction!

Great analysis about this film. 👍 Some viewers don't get that Chigurh and Sherrif Bell didn't start a gunfight in the motel room because Chigurd was hiking in the room next door. Also, some viewers don't know that Chirgurh murdered Carla in the final scene and checked for her blood in his boots. 😬

I love how this movie flips the viewers expectations, with Carson and the thought he will eventually have a gunfight with Anton, with Llewellyn and his story, and my favourite the Sherriff and Deputy, in these types of movies it's common for the Sheriff and Villain come to blows, and sometimes have the Deputy die or be wounded by the Villain to add stakes to the film, but that never happens, infact the Deputy becomes less involved in the story, it add to the realism of this story and makes the stakes that much more impactful.

One suggestion if you'd like to see the "open space" of America: Visit Las Vegas and rent a car. Then consult a map and take a drive on Route 50, from Ely Nevada to Reno Nevada. You'll see NOTHING during the 300 mile drive for as far as you can see (except mountains bigger than those in this movie), AND you can then drive off the road on any number of jeep trails, and go off the road for 50 miles or more and STILL see nothing but mountains, etc. Nevada (unlike every other state except Alaska) is nearly 80% federal land -- which is utterly empty, and in which you can drive around at your pleasure. How big is Nevada? A road trip from Las Vegas to Reno is an 8 hour drive. The county next to Clark County (which has Las Vegas) is Nye County. Nye county is over THREE TIMES as large as the entire state of Connecticut.

I'm sure someone else will say, but, since it's only "implied" in the film (in a discussion between Sheriff Ed and Carla Jean), the device he carries around is a "bolt gun." This is most often used to "stun" animals for slaughter (or sometimes euthanasia, in a farm/ranch environment). The "bolt" comes out of the device for about three inches, and goes into the brain, and then is instantly withdrawn (for use on the next animal).

This IS a Western, Mary, but it’s more of a neo-Western or modern Western, since it takes place in the American Southwest in 1980. It’s also a neo-noir film. They did an excellent job recreating 1980 Texas. This is one of the Coen Brothers’ best films.

There's a line in the book that lets you know that Carson Wells got what was coming to him. And it should have been worse. Even if something like 90% of the book is translated to the film, there's some additional material that lets you know how ruthless Anton is. Also a little extra to let you know how good Bell is.

The American Southwest's deserts are beautiful in the extreme. Although this movie has its share of violence, its clean shots of the desert landscapes are a treasure. Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico are American states with incredible parks where the desert landscapes can be safely viewed and even partially toured in just a few days...or, if you are short on time, key points can be seen in just a few hours. Including, but not limited to, unique rock forms and geological anomalies, Native American pictographs carved or drawn upon rock faces, ancient dwellings of first peoples of the region, and plant life that is rarely found anywhere else in the world. I only toured the deserts a few times, but some of the things I saw are even more beautiful than any movie could do justice. I whole heartedly recommend touring someday.

This movie is brilliant. The lack of sound adds so much to the tension. If you're looking for westerns, "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" is a classic and a must watch. Another favorite of mine is "Unforgiven," starring Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, and Gene Hackman.
