This is a really great version of the unistrut hack. It's the only one I've seen that used the threaded bar, which is by far the best solution I've seen. I'll maybe incorporate this with aluminium extrusion running perpendicular to fix solar panels etc (minimise weight). Thank you for sharing this.
@BruceLauderdale

Funny thing is I have just taken the panels off yesterday, finally painted the Unistrut today after letting it weather for months. And I am doing exactly that. I am putting aluminium tubing across the roof to hold the panels

Hi Bruce, did you use the heavey duty 2.5mm or light duty 1.6mm unistrut.
@BruceLauderdale
@BruceLauderdale Жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, I used the 2.5mm x 21mm profile. If I were going to do it again. I then put 35mm aluminium square tubing across. I chose 35mm because it was the same as the solar panels.
@BruceLauderdale
@BruceLauderdale Жыл бұрын
I think if you are going to brace it with cross roof members, 1.6mm will probably be sufficient.

How are the roof tabs attached to the van? Spot weld? How strong do you think they are?
@BruceLauderdale
@BruceLauderdale 3 жыл бұрын
They are made for roof racks. You can get expensive Rhino Roof racks to go on and they can hold 700+ kgs. So while I don’t know how they’re fitted, I have faith they’re strong enough for my solar panels etc

How much weight would you say the struts themselves add?
@BruceLauderdale
@BruceLauderdale 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Neil, Thanks for taking the time to comment. I bought two 6M lengths. Each length weighed 11kgs. But the 4 small mushroom clip pieces for each side where cut off from each length. Then I cut about 30cm off each to get to the final length. So I would say with nuts and bolts an additional 22kgs.

@DavineShift 2 жыл бұрын
@@BruceLauderdale we don't use Metric in US. At my local hardware store they want to know the gauge. Here are the demsions of the two trails I'm looking at: 12 gauge= (Imperial) Product Depth (in.)120 Product Height (in.)1.625 Product Length (ft.)10 ft Product Width (in.)1.625 14 gauge= (Imperial) Product Depth (in.)120 Product Height (in.)0.8 Product Length (ft.)10 ft Product Width (in.)1.6 Which is closest to what you used, please let me know 🙂 thx.
@BruceLauderdale
@BruceLauderdale 2 жыл бұрын
@@DavineShift well 0.8in is roughly 21mm so I would say gauge 14. There are two shapes a more square looking one when you look from the edge and then one half the height but roughly the same with… I use the shallower one. Then you get two thicknesses of the metal a really thin one and a thicker more sturdy one. directchannel.uk.com/unistrut-type-channel-and-accessories/Unistrut-type-channel-plain-slotted/heavy-gauge-unistrut-type-channel

Hey Neil, I used thread bar. If I were doing it again. I would go with a 41mm Unistrut roof clip piece and go with a 50mm bolt.
@nirwin
@nirwin 3 жыл бұрын
@@BruceLauderdale so I've just attached my bars. Went for a 60mm m10 hex bolt. Mainly because getting 2 nuts on a 50mm i think would be hard to tighten. But my bars are on now. Will upload a video at some point on my channel @veesventures on YT.
