No Exit (Huis Clos) is one of Jean Paul Sartre’s most interesting existentialist short stories. The book is the source of one of Sartre’s most celebrated phrases: “Hell is other people”.
Sartre brilliantly emphasises that hell is not so much a specific place, but a state of mind. It is connected with his idea of the Look, which explores the experience of being seen, as we are always under the eyes of others.
The conflict of being a subject (an agent of one’s life) and being an object that other people are observing, alienates us and locks us in a particular kind of being, which in turn deprives us of our freedom, because we are unable to escape the “devouring” gaze of the other.
Sartre illustrates the difficult coexistence of people, as the entire social realm is based on adversarial aspects.

🌹💙 This is a fascinating interpretation of Sartre’s “No Exit;” thank you immensely. I have a question regarding a related subject: I understand the statement “Existence precedes Essence,” but I wonder if any Essentialist philosophers addressed the matter of the child prodigy: that meaning that in that child’s previous lifetime, the groundwork was laid for their prodigiousness to be expressed in the following incarnation. If this is assumed, then in some circumstances might Essence precede Existence? The Greek philosophers believed that Essence came before Existence as most believed in reincarnation. Is there a connection regarding this? A video on this subject matter would be awesome if you’d consider it. Much appreciated and keep up the fantastic work you are doing. Bright Blessings! 🌞🙏

@@alanpenaf.7633 Thank you for your response and forgive my tardiness in replying. I turned 64 last month; am I lonely still? Sometimes. I should mention that I had the good fortune, 30 years ago, when I met the woman whom I've since shared my life with, married 25 years, no kids. She has been the jewel of my life and is my whole life, my reason for living. But am I still lonely and lost? Sometimes, yes. No other person, not even love, can fully excise those existential feelings. But they can go far in doing so. So I'm a better person and have had a much better life for having those things. Take care...

@@satnamo if you're referring to slavery/economic oppression, those are states of mind too. albeit states of mind inflicted upon by other people, just as many states of mind are. matters such as oppression and inequality can exist on mass-scale and to varying intensities of suffering, but that doesn't make it any less a poison of the mind.

“It is judgement which kills us”-Colonel kurzt(From the movie Apocalypse now). I will highly recommend you this masterpiece movie. I could relate that line to Sartre's “Hell is other people”.(And i think Sartre's claim in No Exit is more about others people's judgement that makes us hyper self conscious;the moment we start to watch ourselves through the eyes of others,we become trapped into a psychological hell) Besides, you could observe so many Nietzschean elements in this movie.

I think No Exit and phrase “Hell Is other people” is the closest depiction of Hell if there is such a thing. If Hell is indeed real, then Hell is the place of our state of mind with all the worries, doubts, fears, anxiety, shame, guilts, that goes through our minds. And we fear and worry about how others see us, so Hell is what we put ourselves in through others.

Jesus Christ loves you and He will save us from our sin if we put our faith and trust in Him! we all sinned and fell short of Gods perfect glory (romans 3:23) and the wages of sin is eternal death! (romans 6:23) but the gift of God is this john 3:16-21: “for God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.” and romans 10:9-13: “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on Him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” so God is coming at a time we least expect, and if we put our faith and trust in Him He will gift us His grace and clothe us with the righteousness of His blood (but of course death could not hold Him, He is risen!) and we will have eternal life in His kingdom where there will be there will be no more death, or sorrow, or crying. there will be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. because He loves you so much! (romans 5:6-8) but if we deny and reject Him and don't repent from our sins to follow God, then we will have our part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. because no liar, no thief, no blasphemer (using Gods name in vain as a cuss word to express anger or disgust) and no adulterer (Jesus Christ says in matthew 5 that anyone who just looks at someone to lust for they’re an adultery at heart) will enter the kingdom of heaven. so hear these words, repent and believe the gospel! accept Jesus Christ and confess your sins to Him so that He will forgive you and save you from hell where the fire will never be quenched and give you a life with truth, love, joy, and peace in His kingdom instead which will never fade away or perish. this is all if you haven't done this yet and Jesus Christ hasn't saved you yet, God bless you! 🙌👑💟
