This is the SR-72 Son of Blackbird - it is faster than the fastest aircraft in history. A direct descendent of the SR-71 Blackbird, it was designed to fly faster and higher than every missile or cannon round shot at it. To say the least, the SR-72 would be invincible. This aircraft, its predecessor, and its shocking, groundbreaking, nearby hypersonic cousin are the focus of this video - starting with the one that started it all - the SR-71 Blackbird.

The sole Darkstar prototype was destroyed whilst testing at Mach 10 during 2019. It was piloted by Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell at the control but the Air Force has recently released film of testing in cinemas.

The YF-12A from which the SR-71 was developed did carry long range air to air missles. It did not carry guns, it flew too fast to use them.

Weaponizing a Hypersonic Aircraft is a mystery ...to me anyway. What Doors can be "Opened" to release Missiles or Bombs or expose Cannons w.o major Aircraft Heating/Stress problems? Even lasers could have a problem with Optics Exposed & Heating. IF these weapons releases would be executed at Supersonic Speeds It could be understood.

There were versions of the SR-71's predecessor that could carry a piggy-back drone and also missiles. It was in the 50's, IIRC.

You may be thinking of the M-21, a two seater variant that carried the D-21 (powered by a Marquandt ramjet). Problem was launching the drone through the shock cone. One of the M-21s was lost when the drone pitched down on separation and hit the M-21. The pilot survived ejection but the guy in the backseat drowned in a sea landing I think. See Jay Miller’s Aerofax book on the Blackbird family. It was a CIA operation about 1964-66 I think. The U.S.A.F launched perhaps 6 D-21 drones from a B-52 Hound Dog pylon using a huge solid rocket booster. Trying to overfly Chinese nuclear test ground (Lop Nor?), I think 4 were not recovered, one crashed somewhere in China, the Chinese recovered pieces. The sixth got out of Chinese airspace, jettisoned the data package, but that was lost at sea. After that, satellite reconnaissance was good enough to give away atmospheric overflights. Re this video putting up the J-85 as a viable hypersonic engine core. ROTFLMAO. OK it has the same numbers as the J-58, but that was an extremely exotic engine, the J-85 is neat and compact, but I don’t think many F-5 pilots Mach 2+ hours would be in double digits even after a full service career. When you remember that the SR-71 was essentially a titanium fuel tank with a couple of enormously powerful engines attached, well, where is the fuel needed to get to high sustained Mach numbers. Also, SR stands for Strategic Reconnaissance (because Lyndon Johnson screwed up the press conference in 1964, he was meant to say RS(Reconnaissance Strike)-71, in theory the follow-on to the dying RS(née XB)-70 Valkyrie). If SR-72 is another recon bird, why give yourself the grief of trying to get clean weapon separation at high Mach?

Missile carrier was the YF-12A, a two seater, carrying 3 Hughes AIM-47 (GAR-9) Falcon and AN/ASG-18 system originally designed for the North American XF-108. The YF-12A was Lockheed’s submission for the Improved Manned Interceptor (IMI) program, which eventually terminated with ICBM threat supplanting air-breathing bombers. Also, given the lengthy pre-flight needed by the Blackbirds, a scramble launch seems unlikely unless you’re will to accept an hours long response time. Still an awesomely impressive aircraft. The nose chine was cut back to fit the radome (see also B-58 Snoopy test bed), with IR sensors on the front of the chine each side of the cockpit. The stabilising role of the chine is demonstrated by the need for two ventral fins below the engine nacelles, and a bigger folding ventral under the rear fuselage. The weapon system successfully intercepted a B-47 at 40,000ft while the YF-12A was at 80,000ft. The radar/missile combination eventually evolved into the AN/AWG-9 / AIM-54 Phoenix system that equipped the F-14. Three YF-12As were built, NASA flew a couple of them, and one is still intact at the Air Force museum at Wright-Patterson.

You can't say nothing can beat it when it has yet to be used in combat. The Russians thought the T90 would conquer the world and a few unsinkable ships rest at the bottom of the see. It remains to be seen how this is going to work out.

I'm trying to think of how these jets could deliver conventional missiles while flying at Mach 5. If a missile were deployed out of these jets at that speed, it wouldn't be pretty. Most of our missiles don't do even close to Mach 5, so how would that work? Directed Energy weapons (lasers) would seem much more feasible, but you can't blow up a city with a laser, nor could you drop a nuclear bomb at that speed.

The reason the sr71 was mothballed was because it’s obsolete, then it stands to reason that an sr72 is unnecessary, the military industrial complex and their defense contractor buddys can go jump in the lake… groom lake that is.

The SR71 was shot down once by China when it was on a spy mission back in the 70s. I was a kid at the time so I remember it. A while later the US Air Force received a box in it was the SR71. The Chinese had taken it apart bolt by bolt! They were sending a message. Don't even try to say the B2 Stealth Bomber was never shot down because Captain Scott Ogrady was flying a mission in Bosnia when he had an engine failure and a lucky missile strike shot down his bird. He spent several weeks eating grass and insects while evading capture until the US Navy rescued him. The Bosnians probably sent the bird to Russia for analysis.
