I remember “discovering “ Barbara Pym in the early 80’s when her newer ones were coming out in paper back and compulsively reading them on my daily hour+ bus ride to work. Don’t think I read these older ones so will look forward to your comparisons between the 2 stages of her writing!🙋♀️👍📚

My perfect author would be a fusion of Denton Welch and Barbara Pym.

I read Quartet in Autumn last year and loved it. I haven't sought out any other of her novels.. I'm wondering if I'll like her early novels versus what I liked about Quartet. I do like themes of aging and feeling relevant, though.

Quartet is coming up next, since I’m reading them in sequence. I think I’ll hold off starting it until autumn - I don’t usually read seasonally themed books in their correct season, so I thought I would try it for once! :-)

Ummm, I think Autumn refers to the time in their life, not the season. But its possible its both. Look at that, you might not have to wait now!

As I’m finding with my Iris Murdoch readalong, it’s such a great experience to read an authors work in chronological order or to really get stuck into an authors backlist. I must admit I tend to always be on to a new shiny author rather than going to another book from someone I’ve already read. This sounds so much fun if somewhat sad although that cover, for me, is pretty terrible!

Ha ha - yeah that cover. It sounds like you’re more an Iris Murdoch fan than I turned out to be! 😜

Well I have heard some negative things about The Sea, The Sea in particular so don’t let that put you off her completely!

Ok. I need to ask what movie these clips are from. I want to watch the entire thing.

The old 1940s movie was called The Human Comedy. Here’s the full clip (not the entire movie, though): kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y17OgmOXrLqXZtk

Isn’t mainwaring pronounced mannering? Or do I have it wrong?

This sounds like a fascinating read. Would it be weird to read it before her previous books?

I don’t think so. They’re all standalone. I’ll be so curious to hear how you get along!
