Never managed to pull off the head and arm variation. Always end up hopping to an osoto after not being able to generate enough lift against shorter opponent's. The underhook variation is awesome though. I was taught to imagine you're doing an uppercut with the under hooking arm to get them on their toes. Theyre usually already off the floor as soon as the back leg steps in before the pivot. Awesome techniques!

would it be wrong to say that harai goshi is like o goshi but with a leg to guide through?

The first overhook underhook one, perfect for armbar. The second one where you grab the lat is wicked. Right into a possible Ezekiel choke or Americana. Love kesa gatame. Wicked good shit man.

@@jarrodfobes2103 Thanks and yeah. That's my goal. I want a complete grappling skill set. Not just ass scooting and imanari rolls lmao. With the second one you can do the Judo armbar with your legs. What is that called? I forgot but it's newaza.

@@rye-bread5236 I think you are referring to juji gatame, the cross body armlock

@@rye-bread5236 oh that one, that's a great hold. So I'm not the strongest at the Japanese terminology, but I was always taught that Judo newaza technique names were very broad and didn't include a lot of names for variations. So at Welcome Mat we always just called it ude garame ("entangled arm", aka Americana) with the leg, which is also what we called oma plata.

I do the first version more often, except I like to hook (in your case the right arm) onto his trap, it still works, but just out of curiousity, does my version pose any disadvantages?
@jarrodfobes21039 жыл бұрын
+Christian Schaefer I like to hook low and glue them to my hip so I can lift more with my lower body. Hooking the trap would give you more drive upward with your arm, but a little less control of their hips, so I would say it's a matter of preference. Also if I reach up from that position I feel like my shoulder is at a greater risk of injury. But the most important thing is, does it work? If it works for you, it's correct.
@Passarinho869 жыл бұрын
Jarrod Fobes Ok. I see what you mean with the lower body control.

It's an awesome throw but it's really difficult to do static let alone against a moving opponent
@jarrodfobes21037 жыл бұрын
ronki23 I usually found it a little easier to learn new throws with some movement, I was a brown belt before I felt more comfortable practicing from a static position. I'm way overdue for a new vid, maybe I'll do one on introducing movement to technique training
@ronki237 жыл бұрын
You have to get them on your back and sweep their leg away and throw but it's hard standing on one leg and making sure you sweep their leg; I can never sweep their leg, I end up doing a one-legged hip throw and sweeping mid air
@jarrodfobes21037 жыл бұрын
Does it work? When I first started training Harai, I was really doing an O Guruma, but I just kept doing what worked while I dialed in Harai Goshi. I think in judo we sometimes get too rigid with thinking each throw has only one correct way. If you can do it without too much muscling, I'd say you're off to a good start.

True, you'll get smashed if you are not fighting under a ruleset that forbids doing so. Don't try this against someone is decent at any kind of wrestling

I'm not sure which ganseki you are referring to, but harai goshi has always been a reliable technique for me. That's not to say it's the best option for everyone, or that it's the only valid technique.
