What was said in the last podcast, man, if we put a serious effort developing no-Gi Judo it's gonna be the next big thing in grappling. I want to see Judo high up there with wrestling and BJJ in the MMA and submission fighting scenes.

@@Shigashi84hi, when I have the overhook like this I’m finding my opponent with the underhook is often able to beat me to an uchimata, is there anything I can be aware of or do that stop them, or is it just a case of body positioning and fighting for the inside foot/leg position? Thanks

Pretty good! My favorite option in nogi BJJ from the whizzer is the ashi guruma... yeah, kinda unorthodox, but is very effective! I throwed even some upper belts with this

Hey started off with judo and i transition to competeing in bjj. My main tds are haria gosh and the other hip tosses from the overhook. Whenever i train/compete against a high level wrestlers i get blitzed by an outside single leg. My question is how do i defend agianst the single leg in the whizzer/overhook postion? Its probably a situation where im so comfortable from the overhook bcs of my long arms that im not applying enough pressure in these situations. If anybody has any tips for being better in this position i would greatly appreciate it.

@SKTheKid 3 ай бұрын
An option if they like to transition from the outside single to a double leg is when you get the whizzer, circle your trapped foot to in between their legs. When they reach across to go for the double, control their wrist, and now you're in position for an uchi-mata.

I mean, in theory they *could*, but there are a couple of things working against that as far as I can see. Now, I'm no expert in either grappling or striking, but I have a couple of years' experience in both as well as having seen questions like this quite a few times. All that said, here's my take: Firstly, the biggest reason why they wouldn't just punch you is that this video is about no-gi grappling, where punches aren't allowed. It's an obvious answer, but it's always worth remembering that technique is always going to change at least slightly between rulesets. That said, positions like this show up pretty frequently in MMA and the person with the overhook generally doesn't have to worry too much about getting punched for the reasons I'm gonna address in the next two paragraphs. The major reason why people don't get punched when grappling in this position even when punches are allowed is that having a good, oppressive overhook on someone makes it *very* hard to throw an effective punch. To throw a powerful punch you need to rotate your hips and shoulders into it, and a good overhook makes both of those very difficult. The other reason it doesn't happen is that, in a perfect world, this position shouldn't be happening for very long. They're hanging out there in the video because they need to explain things, but when it's go time, the follow-up techniques happen very rapidly. When someone is tossing you around with uchi mata attempts and threatening you with ankle picks all from an oppressive overhook, it's very hard to compose yourself enough to throw a proper punch, and if you do get that composure, you're usually better off using that opportunity to fight the grappling match rather than trying to go for punches. Finally, even with all that said, people do get punched doing this! If you see people wrestling in MMA, especially against a wall where it tends to get slow and dragged out, both people will often throw punches at each other to stay active in the eyes of the judges and try to provoke a reaction from their opponent. However, because of the mechanical issues I mentioned earlier, the person in the weaker grappling position can't usually throw strikes that are nearly as powerful as the person in the dominant position, and because winning the grappling exchange is so important, neither person wants to put all their strength into a committed attack, especially since any single punch to the body, even a very strong one, is not at all guaranteed to produce a favourable reaction. You'd be surprised what a person can grit their teeth through in a fight. I hope that all makes sense!
@danielmontilla1197
@danielmontilla1197 10 ай бұрын
They are showing the form, the basic mechanics and the positioning of the bodies. When you apply grappling techniques in combat it's supposed to be done fast, explosively and suddenly. It's like people saying "oh I would elbow him in the back of the head" when seeing a double-leg being taught. You just can't in the heat of the fight, and if you do, that punch will cost you your chance at a proper defense and will get you thrown.
