NO HEAD GASKET NEEDED

I had a B31 way back in1966. My Dad, a top mechanic , showed me how to remove the cylinder head. Those four fancy bolts holding everything together fascinated me. I only had two -stroke experience with bikes. Lifted the head and did the valves. We didn't have a head gasket at hand so I assumed that I would be sent to Campbell's in Canmore St to get one. No. Big shock to me,17 years old, lap the head to the barrel. Never seen that before. Helping? him with car engines one always replaced the head gasket or annealed it if copper. Every day a school day!

Thanks for that. I don’t profess to know what I am doing but I do observe and listen in the presence of experts. I pulled the head off and there wasn’t a head gasket. It ran well fifty years ago when I rode it last, so it’s going back together without a gasket. And like your father I too did some surface lapping. Cheers Peter

WHY..can’t you use a very thin gasket or does that interfere with other things.
