A teacher of mine used to say "imagine you're playing a wind instrument, when you run out of air, rest!" I kind of liked this idea so much that now solos with never ending phrases put me on my nerves! Your lesson expands on this idea and it is invaluable, thanks a lot!

Great subject and presentation. At some point in our bass playing journey, we will either be told directly, or maybe come up with the idea on our own: "Hey, less is more". It is my personal struggle to make this idea sound musical and pleasant. This lesson provided wonderful guidance on how to implement and practice the silences. Thank you. Keep 'em coming.

Good stuff, as usual, man. Never thought about resting during solos. Having watched this now, I can see it as a helpful navigational tool instead of feeling like I have to fill every bar with an arpegiated note filled exercise up and down the fingerboard. Cool! 👍🏿

Dear Matt, after being a Bass Guitar player since my young days, I started my second bass life two years ago with the Upright in a Jazz Combo and in a traditional Bigband. Problem comes with players not attenuated (pardon the pun) to the idea. They hear a space, and believe that if no one else is filling it then they must fill it. There is a place for blazing solos and I love players who do it well… AND there’s a place for this.
