As a Lithuanian I dont understand these our presidents escalations. De Jure Kaliningrad is not Russian territory, there is no legal document, that can back up this claim. Aftermath of ww2, current territory of Kaliningrad was first offered to Lithuania, which was refused. It was refused, because red army caused humanitarian crisis there, and Lithuania wanted nothing to do with it. Then it was offered to Poland, and was refused again for same reason. Third time it was offered to Lithuania again, and again it was refused. And on the forth time it was offered to Russia to temporary occupy, and deal with humanitarian crisis they caused.

It's interesting... But Crimea is Ukrainian? The same Lithuanians will say Ukraine owns Crimea. But Russia has controlled Kaliningrad longer than Crimea was even in the Ukrainian SSR.

I keep saying that USSR borders should have been corrected in 1991. Stalin mixed up land and population intentionally. It is not too late for the International community to correct these borders peacefully, because they will get corrected by war, as we can see.

What is now Kaliningrad was once offered to Lithuania. After the end of the WW2 Kaliningrad was offered to Lithuanian SSR but they refused twice, if I’m not mistaken. One time was offered to Poland and after the collapse of the USSR it was offered to Germany which was rejected. Potsdam conference guarantees that Kaliningrad is part of the USSR and since Lithuanian SSR rejected twice the offer it was transferred to Russian SFSR. So even in the Soviet era it was part of Russia and after the collapse of the USSR it continued to be part of Russia. Now since Lithuania is playing big what would happen if Russia decides to claim entire Lithuania because from Russian imperial times it was a territory considered a part of the Russian empire?

Kaliningrad belonged to Germany from 1255 to 1945. In 1946, Russia changed it's name from Konigsberg to Kaliningrad.

That amazing thing is that until 1945, Kaliningrad's name was Königsberg and it was the capital of Prussia. Prussia was part of Germany. So the victorious powers wrote a document to officially erase Prussia from the map, they brutally cleansed Prussia of its German population and divided the spoils. Königsberg became a Soviet exclave and most of the rest of Prussia was grabbed by Poland. The Prussian city of Memel was also annexed by the Soviet Union and was given to the Lithuanian SSR . Even though the Soviets destroyed as much of Königsberg as they chose (post war), the city still retains much of its German flavor.

I visited the Báltico countries last year and Lithuania was completely run down. Apart from having a tiny population all the Baltic states are dirt poor.

You must be a Russian troll. I have been to Lithuania also and it was great. Beautiful country, beautiful people. The food was outstanding. Vilnius, the capital city was incredible. Restaurants, bars, theaters. Vilnius is a college town with 25,000 students. So you can imagine the night life. Incredible place. Love to go there again.

Konigsburg was founded by German Knights, it was par tof Prussia for all if it's history until the Germans lost WWII Lithuania has no legitimate claim at all 🤷

Königsgrad (now Kaliningrad) is a historically German city. The German population was driven off in 1945.
