No Image / Black Screen on Xbox One | Reset the Video Resolution

If your Xbox One all of a sudden does not show any picture/just a black screen it might be due to something gone wrong with the output resolution. Resulting in that your screen or TV cannot display the image from the Xbox and instead showing a message saying "check cable connection", "no input" etc.
By resetting the output video resolution of your Xbox One you lower the resolution to 640x480 pixels. Something most TV:s and screens can handle without any issue. From there it is then possible to try different resolutions from the Settings like normal.
This works on all of the Xbox One Consoles, that is:

Hm, it sometimes can be a little tricky to get the timing correct. So give it a few tries. Also, try and unplug both the TV and the Xbox for about 5 minutes, then plug both in and try the procedure again. // Chris

Hi! Sorry to hear that it's not working. You also seem to have basically done every "test this" step I know of. If you let the console boot normally, are you able to hear any menu sounds etc. and does the controllers seem to connect like they should? If not then the error might be related to something else other than the output resolution. As a last restort you could try to do a factory reset using a USB-stick (and a computer). However doing so will delete everything currently stored on the consoles hard drive. But as a last restort to try if nothing else is working it might be worth to try. So apparently not all of it will work that easy cause you need to go and find "Video fidelity & scan" then select Display's overrides then press "HDMI" then when your all set go back to the resolution and the other resolution will successfully appears.♡

I have the regular xbox one model and I tried it on my monitor and my TV… I hit the power button and eject at the same time (hear both noises), but nothing happens beside the xbox turning off and not cutting back on no matter how long I hold the two. I have a wired controller and tried it connected and disconnected… when the controller is connected on the black screen I can hold the xbox button on the controller and the menu for Turn Off Console, Turn Off Controller, and Resart Console all appear. Hi! Not longer than with a normal boot-up. If it won´t get off the boot screen something else might be off. I´d say try the procedure again and if nothing seems to work it might be worth testing a factory reset (instructions here: support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/console/reset-console-to-factory-defaults ). Please bear in mind though that doing a factory reset deletes everything currently stored on the console. But as a last resort it might be worth a go. // Chris

Hi! That sounds annoying to say the least. I would guess that somehow some files got messed up and is now preventing the console from booting like it should. You can always try and perform a factory reset of the console using a USB-stick and this guide ( support.xbox.com/en-gb/help/hardware-network/console/reset-console-to-factory-defaults ). However only do it as a last resort if nothing else seems to do the trick, since a factory reset will permanently erase everything stored on the Xbox that is not already backed up to the cloud. // Chris

Hm, then at least it sounds the like video resolution does at least resets correctly. Have you tried any other screens and possible even cables? Some screens don´t like the 640x480 resolution either and might display a black screen there too simply because they don´t support the resolution. I didn’t think it worked either , but on the final step.! Hold the two bottons UNTIL the screen pops up.! Don’t let go when it bings, it won’t work! If you keep holding it, it’ll pop up on screen and look like it’s a 2003 Television lol.! I travel for work, stay in hundreds of hotels so doing this is daily for me.! Honestly I tried everything. Then my TV froze.. lightbulb unplugged the TV am it reset. To find out I was at the troubleshoot screen. It was just the TV. Unplug your TV for a moment.

Did it seem like the reset procedure worked and the console did the two beeps like in the video etc.? Hm, that does sound like the actual problem _could_ be more severe than "just" the resolution being a bit peculiar. If nothing works, as a last resort, you could try and perform a factory reset. There´s also one variant that uses a USB-stick to perform that actual reset, which might come in handy if some of the normal files needed for the procedure on the Xbox are damaged etc. Please note though that everything gets deleted from the console when you perform a factory reset. Hm, that could indicate something being off with the settings on your TV. Providing it´s been working with 1080p before. I would try and go through the HDMI-settings on the TV and also maybe trying to shift HDMI-inputs if you have others available on the TV and see if that changes anything. // Chris

Not that it should really do that much, but I´d also try just changing out the HDMI-cable to be sure it´s not what´s causing the trouble. If the settings otherwise seem correct on both the TV and monitor I suppose the next step before checking with a repair-store is to try a factory reset of the Xbox. Be aware though that this deletes everything on it that is not currently stored on the cloud. Despite a reinstallation of the OS, it still does not want to start normally and remains in safe mode perhaps by doing this method it could work it's an xboxone X console that I ordered on eBay that I don't have not yet received

Hi! Yes it should! Just use the same combination as with the One S All-Digital Edition. That is holding the Xbox-button and the Pair-button. This should produce the exact same outcome. Hopefully the TV will accept the low resetted resolution and you´re then able to change it back up to 1080p. // Chris

Sorry to hear that :-/ Have you tried disconnecting the power completely for about 30 sec and then plugging the power cable back in, to see if that does anything? If nothing helps you could try and initiate a factory reset using this guide and a USB-stick: support.xbox.com/en-gb/help/hardware-network/console/reset-console-to-factory-defaults Bear in mind though that doing so (if it´s successful) will delete everything on your Xbox that is not currently saved in the "cloud".
