What a tragic story and it's so amazing what you have accomplished! My mother was paralyzed from the waist down when I was about six from a car accident and I was in the car also. I can't imagine how hard it was for her or you but it was even hard for me being able to still walk just dealing with the people making fun etc. Thankfully now a days people usually embrace people with disabilities instead of tormenting.
