One of their best songs even without Lionel...A great tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson...May they Rest In Peace...Lionel had already started his solo career by the time they recorded this song...The first guy that sang in this video ( Walter " Clyde " Orange ) was the original lead singer of The Commodores even when Lionel was with them at the groups beginning...Then Lionel took over as lead singer and the rest is history...They had another lead singer mainly during their College days named James Ingram, but he left for Vietnam.

This song was a tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson. Two soul singers of my generation (or anyone who's a baby boomer). I'll always miss them two, glad I was born at the right time and saw Marvin twice. High school when What's Going On and Let's Get It On were out, born in 1953. My generation are lucky. Marvin's core audience were us teens or 20s something back then

I love how the song pays tribute to two legends, Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson (both of whom died - quite young - in 1984, the year before this song came out). And yes, this is the post-Lionel Commodores, where the vocals were shared by Richie's replacement, J.D. Nicholas, and drummer Walter Orange (who happened to be the same man who did the vocals for "Brick House"). For your next Commodores song, I recommend "Oh No".

Amber has a great mind and a big heart, she’s always spot on with her analogies of the lyrics and meanings of great songs! Thank you both for finally listening to this instant classic! I’m sure Lionel knew the Commodores was in good hands when he heard this. Nobody’s saying that the second lead singer is then new lead singer J.D. Nicholas. He is still a member of the group to this day.

Diana Ross did a very sweet one about Marvin, "Missing You". Another great tribute song "American Pie" by Don McLean was about Buddy Holly, J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson and Ritchie Valens. I'm always a ball of tears at the end of La Bamba when his mom finds out he died. Same thing with Selena.

@@terryconnelly484 "Rock and Roll Heaven" was first recorded by the band "Climax" in '73, but it didn't really climb the charts; then, the very next year, 1974, when The Righteous Brothers reformed, they took it on and it rose to #3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics were also updated to include Jim Croce(loved him!) and Bobby Darin who had both died in '73. Over time, the lyrics were periodically updated to include other legendary singers, such as Elvis, John Lennon, Keith Moon, etc.

Actually, Richie left at the end of '81 after he recorded "Endless Love" with Diana Ross. After that dropped and became such a hit, he embarked on his solo career, which we all know has been a success. Nonetheless, this tune proves The Commodores were still a solid group capable of generating great material and hits.

I love the metaphor of 'Nightshift' as applied to these iconic artists, Marvin and Jackie, both of whom died the year before this song was released in tribute to them (and which was The Commodores only big hit after Lionel left the group). The metaphor calls to mind former dayshift workers with whom we were once all on the same schedule, in sync and able to see and enjoy them whenever we wanted, but who are now working nights, out of phase with the rest of us, now existing for us only in fond memories of the times we once shared. It's also interesting to depict the afterlife as being at night, these incredible talents no longer bathed in the sunshine they once enjoyed with us, but now performing in some amazing band all together, playing those sweet sounds through the night while we sleep, supplying us the soundtrack of our dreams. Perfect metaphor, working on so many levels!

Just a bit of gear info for Jay- regarding the guitar, the portion you're talking about is called the headstock. Instruments like in this video are referred to as "headless." The tuning machines/knobs are designed differently and located on the body with a headless guitar/bass. Headless designs are for multiple reasons, including instrument balance- to avoid "neck dive" by reducing weight at that end so the guitar doesn't tend to rotate if the players lets go of it for some reason, like a player also doing keyboards.

Walter Orange was the main lead in the Commodores earlier stuff, he's the 1st lead on "Nightshift". Lionel usually played the saxophone or keyboards then. Walter is the lead on "Brick House", probably their most known uptempo track. Later the group became mostly known for Lionel's ballads that crossed over to Top 40 pop radio, but their more funky songs were primarily played on R&B radio. They did another version of "Nightshift" when Michael Jackson passed. A similar song to this is "Soul Heaven" by Johnnie Taylor. I think "Nightshift" was from their 2nd album after Lionel left. Lionel has said in interviews that he wasn't originally planning to leave the Commodores permanently, he was just going to release a solo album as a side project. Sort of like Genesis (Phil Collins/Mike + The Mechanics/Tony Banks) or New Edition (BBD/Johnny Gill/Bobby Brown/Ralph Tresvant).

This song and music video was released after Lionel Ritchie left The Commodores. Walter “Clyde” Orange, who alternated with Ritchie singing lead vocals, sang the first verse. African-British singer J.D. Nicholas, who replaced Lionel Ritchie, sang the second verse. Whenever I watch this music video, when the group is singing while wearing their throwback naval-inspired suits, I start to cry. When I saw this music video on MTV in 1985, I got very emotional, because I thought that this was going to be the last time I would ever see or hear from this group. Fortunately, The Commodores are still together, and still tour regularly.

The song features a lead vocal from drummer Walter Orange, who had sung lead years earlier on "Brick House". Lionel Richie's replacement, J.D. Nicholas, sings the second verse and then Orange and Nicholas share lead vocals on the remaining choruses. The first verse mentions Gaye's song "What's Going On", while the second verse mentions Jackie Wilson's "Lonely Teardrops" ("Say you will"), "Baby Workout" and "(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher".

One thing I really enjoy about you two is the way you bring new perspectives to my view of music I've known for years. The idea that these legends are helping common workers get through the night shift... I love that insight! Keep doing what you're doing.

Whew, this song hits so different having lost my dad in 2021. I can picture him singing this. Couldn't even finish the video. Amazing song, though, glad y'all discovered it.

One of the Commodores (Milan) was a good family friend before he passed away in 2006. In 2000 my dad was having a function/gathering at the house. I prefered to stay in the garage to work on my car. Milan came into the garage to check on my progress and we ended up talking about cars and life for a bit. Great gentleman. Great musician.

In 1984, "Night Shift" and Diana Ross' "Missing You (which ironically was written and produced by Lionel Richie) were great tributes to Marvin, Jackie and so many Motown stars who had passed away.

Amber...How can someone as young and beautiful as you have a 1,000 year old soul??? Both of you are very special humans and we love your reactions. God bless you and your family and stay groovy!! Peace and love to the rest of my "family" here.

Lionel decided to go solo and this was during that time. You guys really missed out on him winning four American Music Awards in one night during 1987 for his album "Dancing On the Ceiling", so I think he made the right move. 😃 I remember him going back and forth to the stage and being so surprised that he kept saying "Outrageous!" 😄 There may be footage on KZbin. I think he won three of the same award for his album "Hello" a year or two before that.

Great song and great reaction, as always! My suggestion for you two to react to, on a Female Friday or any other day is "Hello" by Walk Off The Earth featuring Myles and Isaac! You have never seen nor heard anything like it!!

Such a glorious posthumous tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson! Where’s Lionel? He left to embark on his incredible solo journey! This song was a huge hit. The Commodores had another incredible post- Lionel Richie song: Only You. Hope you can give it a listen!
