Hey, my lovelies.
This was such a fun episode to shoot with Paul and Rudy . We had such a great time. I had to winch a couple of times, but I was really being a princess about everything because I was so terrified of breaking anything because I didn’t have a truck or trailer with me. I literally took that truck and drove it five hours to and from Moab.
Paul and Rudy both had trailers. They’re smart and next time when I take the Tacoma out I’ll make sure to have a truck and trailer close by so that I can have the gumption to crawl up things or bump up obstacles.
Such a fun day with such great friends. Looking forward to doing another challenge like this with them soon.
Paul was on 35 inch tires and Rudy and myself were on 33 inch tires. Rudy and I had no lockers but we still managed to do most of the trail.
Thank you so much for watching and I hope you enjoyed the episode as much we enjoyed making it .

Wheelin’ with two very good drivers! Paul doesn’t do “can’t “. And Rudy’s in that category, but hasn’t been at it as long as Paul. Love it! 😂

Small tire? I remember when 33 was the big tire. I do think a whole lot of the off-road stuff I see is more of a technology race than a skill challenge. I think you’ll become a better overall driver by using the less built equipment to its fullest potential instead of just going bigger to overcome the terrain.

Yep, it went from tall narrow since most roads weren't paved to low profile/wide for more stability with heavy loads on high speed paved roads. My W200-E20 Custom Special Power Wagons came with 9.50-16.5 16 ply tires to match the payload of the Factory Custom trucks running W600 drivelines and axles cut down at the Dodge Custom Shop in the factory to fit a 200 series Power Wagon. Offroading with those did require some forethought since they were designed to be able to carry tall heavy slide in campers along with pull heavy loads on paved roads. The 12 leaf spring packs made them rough riding on paved roads however they were equipped with locking axles front and rear so you could everywhere for an even rougher ride and once you got them stuck you were really stuck yet not beyond the capacity of the Military PTO Winches with the 200 to 250 foot drums of 5/8 inch steel cable to pull you out. A winch driven off the transfer case of a 383 or 440 powered truck could pull all day long without overheating if required and benefited from the variable speeds that engine throttle and the 4 speed transmission provided. Quite different from the monster tires we see today but we survived hauling, doing construction, logging and off-roading with them back then. We got a lot of value for the $3,600 you paid for a factory custom back then which included Air Conditioning, Tinted Glass and Body Side Moldings. Ordered mine with the bus sized steering wheels and old reliable manual steering though you did have to be careful to anticipate the front locker potentially catching you by surprise and spinning the wheel in your hands giving you a burn or breaking your thumbs if you absentmindedly had them hooked. Best!

This small tire is what many people play with and I think is the most overall off roading fun. Maybe not flashy and sexy but basic and traditional most fun. The trail has changed a lot in 30 years

Small tire is where we all start. Bigger tires as budget allows. I live my saying “Who’s having MORE FUN than US????? NOOOOOOBUDDY!!!!!” To run BIG tires there are added expenses, as you well know. You have fun with big, I have fun with 31’s, and we know there was a flat fender on 7.00-16’s bouncing around long ago that had as much fun as all of us today. Glad you’re showing you can wheel with tires shorter than 37’s😉

In the 70's I bought a Jeep and after sinking a fortune in it, decided my next 4x4 would be a 1984 Stock Toy Extracab with a 4 cyl engine and 5spd which became my new rig with slightly over sized tires and wheels. I hand winched off a few sticks but because I had no friends in Utah, my playground was around Pikes Peak and Wolf Creek Pass. I never needed anything else. At 70 I have plenty of stories. My truck was a little smaller than that one. But I had sense to judge where I crossed obstacles. It's my opinion, that these over built rigs are getting out of hand. I never wanted to spend a fortune on a rig again. This was before the days of computers and yoo toob.

We have a 4Runner with a 3" lift and 33's. We don't rock crawl and that is way more exreme than we want to try. We do wheel with a group of friends and our "large" tire guy is on 35's. It is fun and we work together as we have some Subaru's and stock rigs that come along. I have pulled some big rigs with 40's off rocks with my Badlands 12k winch and they were glad we cruised by...enjoy!

I've never driven an off road vehicle with anything larger than 31's from my grandfather's 1980 suburban to my 16 f150. Even the s10 with (I think) 28's does well if you know your lines and clearance. Smaller tires just require more situational awareness and a willingness to know when to stop. Sure I'm not going to go over huge boulders or do some of the more crazy trails but can still have a good time just being out in the wilds doing fun things and enjoying the scenery. At some point I may build a rock crawler (maybe with the s10, not sure) but honestly the f150 does a good job for what little off roading I've done or would normally do.
