The difference between men and women rejecting someone is that men usually do it with tact and respect, and that men rarely get put in the position to reject a woman's advances. Psychologically its a lot more complicated: Can be a form to get attention they otherwise wouldn't get, a form to to drown out what they perceive as voices in their mind due to an overwhelming sensation of guilt, a form of self punishment also related to that sensation of guild, can be a stress relief mechanism, etc... This behaviour can be seen in people with PTSD or Schizophrenia but these days will likely be associated with a diagnosis of a personality disorder which is likely to develop from broken families that cannot provide structure, boundaries, safety and routine. Sorry for the long write up and understand I am just scratching the surface here.
