The no map no problem series is one of the coolest you've done yet, Dave. I knew virtually nothing about how to use a compass or how to navigate, and don't know anyone else that does very well either. Keep this series going! Thanks!

Man, these "No Map No Problem" videos are awesome. This makes navigation and measurements SO simple and understandable. Makes me want to go out and try it even more than I already do. Makes pre-calc seem pointless

I have to agree with Bryan (Survival On Purpose) that was the best explanation I have ever seen. P.S. I have three kids ages 13 to 23 and they have, like so many others, grown up in the age of technology and instant gratification. We have done all we can to educate them and I wanted to let you know that your videos have been a big part of the education process. I started watching back when you posted your Tom Brown Tracker video. My family and I have been watching and learning with you ever since. Thank so much Dave!

Dave, I have been teaching the same principles to Boy Scouts for many years and that is, without a doubt, the clearest explanation of how to estimate height and distance I have ever heard. And I have to say, using the clinometer (is that the correct word?) is a new one for me. Now I need to check my compass (Suunto MC-2) to see if it has one. Thanks for all the great videos. Happy New Year! Bryan

I just finished the land nav portion of bct, this covered so much that we never got to discuss that I found myself taking notes. I guess that's what happens when you have to learn at the pace of the slowest student in the classroom. I really hope you can do a video on resection; I haven't been able to find anyone in my platoon or company that would explain it. Thank you, and I hope you have a happy new year.

Great videos, Dave. I wish you well in the New Year. I knew a lot of the things you talked about in your video series, but it was a good refresher. One thing I learned that I thought was great was using the compass to determine the height of an object. I have a Silva Ranger that I never knew what the "clinometer" was used for...in fact, I didn't even know what it was called. Thanks again for the great videos!

I took geometry in highschool probably 15 years ago and as I was watching the video a lot of what I learned then about calculating unknowns of triangles came flooding back. So it helps me to think of it like a geometry problem and solving for an unknown.

I've been following Dave and Wilderness Outfitters for quite some time and enjoy the videos. They are great tools to help reconfirm and retrain many skills that are best if committed to muscle memory. My question for Dave: Are there any skills that you think are easier to train due to them being instinctual or natural human response? Do you train or instruct these skills differently than other ones? Thanks for all you do!

An even easier way using a branch that is as long as your arm (from shoulder to outstretched fingertip): Grasp the end of the branch with one hand. Hold the branch horizontally if you are measuring distance, vertically if measuring height. Make sure the angle between the branch and your outstretched arm is 90 degrees. Starting at your origin (the base of the tree/edge of the river bank), just walk away from the tree/along the river bank whilst keeping your clenched hand (the base of the branch) aimed at the origin. Count paces as you go. When the tip of the branch lines up with your target (top of tree/other side of river) then an isosceles triangle has been formed and the distance/height you wanted to measure is equal to the distance you have walked.

Another crude but effective method for (tree) height is to follow the arc from vertical to horizontal with a stick at arm's length. Line up the base of the stick with the base of the tree and make a mark where the top of the tree is on the stick. Still at arm's length, lay the stick in a horizontal position with its base lined up with the base of the tree. Whatever falls between the base of the tree and the mark on your stick is in harm's way.
