Great review!!!! I loved Apba basketball back in the late 80's and early 90's but I agree its cumbersome. I personally prefer the depth and minutia that Apba provides, but that is not everyones cup of tea to say the least. I always enjoyed this game more than my friends, they too put the game down due to the length it took to play, I just ordered one off of Ebay (1976-1977 NBA season cards with it) and cant wait to get it. Thanks for doing this Gilles!

Good luck, I know some guys have done spreadsheets to help with this game.

I had this game more than 50 years ago! I played a Lakers-Celtics game, I completed it (Celtics won, I think around 128-123) with Russel outdueling Chamberlain just like in real life. I spent a while thinking about playing another game with two other teams and ended up throwing it in the trash instead.

Too bad. Ebay is selling these games for high prices. Just saying.

Note: There is a Fellow on the FORUM who completed a full Season 71-72 Replay Albeit with the Short Version with I believe the aid of an automated lineup Spreadsheet to avoid rewriting lineups. I personally completed about 35 games per team almost half the season of 1971-72 with multiple lineup sheets created with Excel to avoid rewriting and mostly with the short version. I came up with some ideas I sent to APBA on retaining the Floor Play as a Limited Optional Part of the Game where you could reserve the Last 2-3 minutes of each half for (long version-Floor Play) Much More Practical to play Short Version and Eliminate the rewriting of Lineups completely by having Multiple Lineups Pre-written on a spreadsheet or use an automated Lineup sheet. Believe it or not that can actually be fun.

Care to share your system with other APBA basketball nuts? It sounds like s grest system.

I waiting to see how long you play this game before you put it on the shelf where it like all the others that exist will collect dust for the rest of your life. This game in my opinion is designed more for 2-players. Thanks for the Demo

I don't think it's designed for 2 players so much as it's designed for hostages at Gitmo.

I have APBA Basketball and, yeah - it's so cumbersome & long that it takes at least two hours just to get from the National Anthem to the opening tip. 🙄😂

It's a shame this game didn't work out. I'm very pro Apba and all their other games are great imo,so I play Strats basketball game,which is good. I contacted APBA and asked if they were going to give basketball another shot and they responded by saying they were working on it,but that has been a few years ago 🤷. I think they tried to put too much into this game. I hope they try again, I really like the realism in their other games,but that's just me. Thanks for the video.

You know I just watched your video again and got re-excited to play. I have a set of 1986 to 1987 mint condition cards coming from eBay in the next few days. So far my experience in playing this game, and I've now played four complete games is the field goal percentage seems Quite a bit higher than it should be. That is most likely due to the solitaire system and the slim chance of actually guarding what the offense is doing based on the solitaire system. I am experimenting with some charts I am making that make it harder to get open-than just the one in seven chance that the solitaire system calls for. I'm guessing by this video your experience with playing a good quantity of games is probably limited, lol. Would you mind sharing what your experience or thoughts are regarding the field goal percentages that the game yields from your experiences so far?
@gillesthibault3679 ай бұрын
I agree - randomizing the defense with dice did not seem realistic enough, seems like FTF you may get lower FG percentages. It maybe should be 1-2 the other teams best player is guarded then 3-8 the other parts of the floor. I applaud you getting through 4 games !😀

Thanks Gilles! I have much respect for your input and all you do for us APBA fans! I am working on a solo play solution for the basketball game. Once I have it developed I will test it on 5 full games and if you would be willing I could send it to you to get your take on it, if not I totally understand, especially since I watched and enjoyed your NO MAS video! LOL! My initial thoughts were to have A/B guarded around 90% of the time for shots, passes and dribbles and have C/D guarded 60% of the time and E/F guarded 40% of the time, BUT I love your idea of maybe making it not only the location but also the player (obviously the best scorer on the team will get guarded more than the worst scorer). I will try to do a system based on both the player and their offensive ability AND the floor section, so thanks for the input on the player being guarded more if they are a better scorer! Sorry this is so verbose, I absolutely love APBA and want to be as clear as possible!

Table top games should go with beer and pretzels. A good time with short chart work. Should be representative of the pace of the real game.

I thought as a "game" it was pretty good. That is, you can use a lot of unique strategies to move the ball around. I liked it. However, where it bogs down in my opinion is with the "finder columns". Changing personnel was a nightmare. If that could be streamlined, it might work as a game. Either way, though its going to take a while to play a game, much less an entire season.

Some guys have used Excel sheets, or index cards to help with the finders and subs, I believe it may be fun to just play a quarter. Head to head vs someone.

Wow. I've heard and read a lot about this game and most of it hasn't been complimentary. I can see why it takes so long to play a game.
@DrSeuss-nv9hw Жыл бұрын
Referencing charts slows the game down. There should be an initial roll that determines basketball actions, ie a shot, non shooting foul, shooting foul, steal attempt, block attempt, etc.). Shots should be based on shooting frequency of the actual player, as should all the other statistics. When you get into passing (other than assists) and you keep having to refer to charts, the game bogs down. Also, a basketball coach gives his players instructions. But he loses control once the players break the huddle. He doesn't control passing and, most times, shooting decisions. Even if you want someone to shoot the ball, he may not get open for a good look at the basket. This is now the second most popular sport on Earth. Surely someone can come up with a good basketball sim.
