For two people who have or had very little mechanical knowledge, you are learning very fast. When you buy a socket set, get a set of deep impact sockets with a impact hammer. They will release any nut or bolt. the sockets only have six sides, so they fit nuts and bolts perfectly. so you do not need buy a normal socket set straight away. I think the two of you are really great to watch.

I'm an engine builder and I know I learned from hands on which is the only way to learn in my opinion so with that being said....new valve springs are actually a must. Even though carbon deposit buildup is normal under the valve seats this also occurs more later on in the engine life due to the weaking of the valve springs which in turn doesn't allow the valve to close as quickly, allowing the firing or exhausting valve to be open just enough to allow carbon deposit more quickly.

I know this video has been out for awhile, but just wanted to show some appreciation for your confidence and willingness to try. As a professional mechanic, I know of some mechanics that would shy from the kind of engine work you are doing. Keep pushing forward on your current project with the double hull Polynesian style cat you're working on at the moment! You didn't let past challenges stop you and you succeded. Don't let other's opinions make you stop trying.

Aye m8’s, absolutely good decision to redo the leaking valves. And I'm wondering about those missing screws for the window. Can't you just "lend" from another window that isn't finished yet? You can than keep up the progress until you find the missing ones and replace them in the last window.
@DoRC3 жыл бұрын
A tip if you're ever installing valves again. Give each valve a nice tap with the hammer on the end of the stem after installing the keepers. This ensures that the keepers are installed properly. Sometimes the keepers can seem like they're installed properly and then pop out the first time you start it. Giving it a few taps with a hammer insures that if they're going to pop out they'll pop out then.

Since the head was over heated several times you should have the surface of the head checked for level, if it’s not level you should have it level at a machine shop , if it’s not level your head gaskets may not seal

Excillent advice now tell the man how ... I use a straight edge large framer square whats your method ?
@johannesrehn77863 жыл бұрын
it probably overheated due to the headgasket, since its a iron head i would just use a framer square to see its not warped, in my experience iron head warp allot or not, if its warped the new gasket will never seal,
@Cameron-ur2tk3 жыл бұрын
@@russelldarintullis2731 Id recommend using a milled straight edge, Something thats with 1 or 2 thousandths of an inch length wise (Ideally dead flat and better than that) place it on the head in the middle, sides, and corner to corner and get a feeler guage out and start trying to poke it under your flat edge. Look up whats acceptable. If its within spec your good, if your a little out of spec you machine it, if your way out of spec buy a new head...You can only machine so much off a head and its always a possibility its already been machined once before.

Nice job guys!! Keep up the good spirits you´l be out there before you know it! If its not too late with your backlog on editing... hot tip with butyl tape - Its much more effective if you hold the screw head still with the screwdriver and tighten the fastener instead (the nut or whatever the the particular fastener may be). It results in ´pulling´ the screw head down onto the butyl, smooshing it out nice and evenly. Sometimes the screwing motion from rotating the screw head where the butyl is can twist the butyl out from where you want it to be. We are still hot on your heels, we expect to entering the petit saone in the next week or so the southward bound. A part of me hopes your still around port st louis so we can pop by and say hey... but I hope for your sake that youl be out of there by then. All the best guys! Chris & Cecilie - SV Little Wing

Check the head and block deck for flatness. Getting them machined flat is usually not expensive.
@justinfufun54833 жыл бұрын
I have done it by hand in the past. use a new whet/oil stone for sharpening chisels check for matching surfaces with paper between the two. Most likely there will be slight deflection in the block from the studs but usually not more than the gasket can take up anyway. Just important to be crazy careful not to let any paste or filings enter oil ways or bores.

Great job you both, Nadiyana for that patience on the windows and Mark for that persistence with the engine work. I have seen the professionals clean the gasket surface with rough sand paper on a block of wood. The important thing is that the head and block mating surface are absolutely flat. It is possible to get an idea of flatness with a stiff straight edge but to be sure you really need access a surface plate. Best wishes from the UK.
