Thanks. Craigslist is a very useful site for finding deals. Also, Litesmith carries small light weigh products at reasonable prices, such a a long handled spoons for eating out of deep dive packaging.

Ebay often has good deals on used (and some new) backpacking gear. Got a synthetic Patagonia Micropuff jacket for a fraction of new price; like new, but had some company logo on the shoulder. Also found an ultralight rain jacket. If there's some specific high-end brand item you really want, just keep checking and it will eventually pop up.

I am a very part-time van-lifer (2 or 3 months a year), and I found one way to get equipment that I needed for my backpacking trips was to just put the word out to friends and family about what I was looking for. It's amazing sometimes what people have tucked away in their basement that they no longer need or want! I ended up being gifted a tent from a friend that had tried backcountry camping and didn't like it. The tent was good quality and hardly used. Works perfectly for me!

I started donating plasma recently for gear. The place was offering a special of $100 or $90 per donation for a limited time & you could donate every 2 days. I normally donate whole blood every 6 wks so this wasnt much different other than more often

I love the REI resale section. Just got used topo shoes with inserts for $6O. Also an awesome rain coat. After many backpack trips and a few mini thru hikes, I have dialed my gear fairly well. The one thing that surprised me was a very cheap pair of Walmart leggings was my choice and worked well..

Just bought a pair of Wrangler fleece lined pants for my winter photography. Wrangler also has nice outdoor pants for when it gets warmer. Not paying those high prices at REI. Did get my daypack there but that also hauls my camera gear.

Yes defiantly look at the Thrift stores. I find Columbia, North Face, Under Armour, etc from time to time and it is much more economical than full price.
